Introduction
BIM Definition:
Building Information Modeling
BIM is a digital representation
of physical and functional
characteristics of a facility. BIM
is a shared knowledge resource
for information about a facility
forming a reliable basis for
decisions during its life-cycle;
defined as existing from earliest
conception to demolition.

Origins of BIM
In 1963 Ivan Sutherland develops SketchPad
as a drawing assistant for part of his Ph.D
dissertation.
In 1970 BIM concepts was born.
In 1987 The first implementation of BIM product
by Graphisoft, ArchiCAD was released.
In 2002 Autodesk acquire Revit Technology
Corporation.

BIM is very much talked about in the Building
Industry
BUT
What is it really?
Why we use it?
How can we use it?

BIM is all the previous and more…
So we can say that BIM is the Process that we use a Software to Create
a 3D Model with an Organized Collection of all Building Data.
And others say BIM is just an Organized Collection
of all Building Data.
Some say BIM is the 3D Model of a building.
Some say BIM is a Process.
Some say BIM is a type of Software.

BIM Product and its uses:
1- 3D Intelligent Model
It begins with a 3D digital model, this model is more than just a geometry and some
textures added to it for visualization.
A true BIM model consists of the virtual equivalents of the actual building sections
used to create a building.

2- Change Management
Parametric relationships
Objects are defined as parameters and relations to other objects, so that if a related
object is modified, dependent ones will automatically change.

BIM Product and its uses:
2- Change Management
Bidirectional Associativity
Since data is stored in a central place in a BIM model, any modification to the building
design will be automatically replicated in each view, such as floor plans, sections,
elevations and also the schedules.
This not only helps in creating the documentation faster, but also provides automatic
coordination of different views.

3- Team Collaboration
BIM Supports the team work concept and helps more than one member to work on the
same model, from early design through to completion, changes are automatically
coordinated across the project and information generated is therefore of high quality.

4- Building Simulation
BIM model contains more than just Architectural data; information about the different
engineering disciplines (Arch, STR, and MEP), sustainability information, and other
characteristics can be easily simulated in advance of actual construction.

5- Clash Detection
Through BIM process, Engineers are able to identify conflicts between model elements
and resolve interferences and other issues early in the design phase, enabling to make
design correction faster before the impact construction cost and schedules.

6- Interoperability “Integration”
BIM process provides the ability of two separate systems or software programs to
communicate and exchange data with each other.

7- Remote Access to Project Data
Making data easy to access for and from anywhere through the usable mobile devices,
viewing the latest models and comparing them with the actual work in the field, this
make it easier to identify the potential design issues.

What are the benefits of BIM for the
Project Management Knowledge Areas?
The data put in the a BIM model
is not only useful during the
design and construction phase
of a building project but can be
used throughout the entire
building lifecycle, helping to
reduce the operation and
management cost of buildings,
which is significantly more than
the entire cost of construction.

The result of all the previous benefits of working with BIM Technology:
Preconstruction benefits to owner.
Increase building performance.
Reduce the financial risk.
Accelerate Decision Making.
Shorten the project schedule.
Obtain reliable and accurate cost estimates.
Assure program compliance.
Optimize facility management and maintenance.
