  1. 1. MOHAMMED VALIKARIMWALA FERGUSSON COLLEGE, PUNE
  2. 2. Algae Introduction: Algaeare mostly aquatic plants (they can be present in marine or fresh water), some being terrestrial also. The study of algae is known as Phycology/Algalogy. They have a vegetative structure (thalloidal). Most of them are free-living while some are symbiotic.
  3. 3. Algae… • Most live in water attached to rocks for free floating. • Use sunlight for photosynthesis • Main food producers in the oceans. • Important suppliers of oxygen. Diatoms – used in detergents, paint removers, toothpaste Golden algae
  4. 4. Characteristics of Algae They maybe small, unicellular, microscopic like Chlorella (non- motile), Chlamydomonas (motile), or multicellular unbranched filamentous like Spirogyra, or branched filamentous like Chara or huge macroscopic such as sea weeds like Sargassum measure more than 60 meters in length.
  5. 5. Classification ofAlgae • The four algal phyla are: Phaeophyta (Brown algae) - Eg: Fucus, Sargassum, etc. Chlorophyta (Green Algae) - Eg: volvox, spirogyra, etc. Cyanophyta (Blue-Green Algae) –Eg: Nostoc, anabeana, etc. Rhodophyta (Red Algae)- Eg: gelidium, Porphyra, etc.
  6. 6. SEXUAL AND ASEXUAL REPRODUCTION IN ALGAE (CHLAMYDOMONAS)
  7. 7. Spirogyra reproduce sexually by conjugation
  8. 8. BIOFUEL PRODUCTION FROM ALGAE
  9. 9. • “Green” Buildings • Biofuel Vehicles Future Aspects How It Works To be specific, it’s actually microalgae. Though it looks like green scum or strands of hair floating on the water, microalgae is actually made up of microscopic, single- celled organisms capable of photosynthesis, like plants. They slurp in sunlight, and convert it to energy. They’re also able to suck up carbon dioxide emitted by power plants and cars, turning it into oxygen. This is better for the environment than fossil fuels, because it’s carbon neutral: The plants draw down as
  10. 10. Economic Importance: Algae
  11. 11. Agar-Agar • It is dried, jellylike, non-nitrogenious. • It is used as a base of culture media in laboratory for culturing microorganisms • Its food value and ability to afford good range of temperature for culturing Alginates: • The alginates are used in Rubber-tyre industry, Paints, ice-creams, and in presentation of flame-proof fabrics and plasticparticles
  12. 12. Antibiotics and Medicines • Some algae yield antibiotics e-g, Chlorellin Is obtained from green alga Chlorella, that inhibits the growth of certainbacteria. • Brown algae is used in manufacture of various goiter madicines
  13. 13. • Treat the illness: • with a multi-drug called Coartem. • It contains sweet wormwood which is an important natural herb. • It is unfortunately quite expensive. • It is a 3 day course. • Kill the mosquitoes: • insecticide-treated mosquito nets act as a physical barrier and actively kill the mosquitoes. • Spraying with DDT, a repellent. This is, however, harmful to the environment.
  14. 14. Harmful Aspects of algae • Water blooms • Death of living organisms • Diseases in human beings Parasitic Activities
  15. 15. Thank you…
