RECENT SIGNIFICANT CLIMATE TRENDS
IN MINNESOTA AND THE WESTERN
GREAT LAKES
•TEMPERATURE: WARM WINTERS AND HIGHER MINIMUM
TEMPERATURES

•DEWPOINTS: GREATER FREQUENCY OF TROPICAL-LIKE
ATMOSPHERIC WATER VAPOR
•MOISTURE: AMPLIFIED PRECIPITATION SIGNAL,
THUNDERSTORM CONTRIBUTION
Temp trend is upward and more frequently above the
90th percentile

Consequences of Warm Winters and Higher
Minimum Temperatures
• Change in depth and duration of soil and lake
freezing
• More rapid breakdown of crop residues
• Later fall nitrogen applications (soil temp too high)
• Change in survival rates of insect
pests, parasites, plant pathogens, and soil microbes
• Reduced energy use for heating (HDD)
• Increased number of freeze/thaw cycles (damaged
roads)
• Change in Plant Hardiness Zones
• Longer growing seasons
• Change in exposure times to mold and allergens

increasing in frequency)
Consequences of Increased Frequency in
Tropical-like Dew Points
• Seasonal dynamics of
pathogen, parasite, insect, and microorganism
populations
• Increased workload in heat related health care
(exposure differentials, MS, COPD, Obesity)
• Increased stress on livestock (change in feed
ration, water, weight gain, mild production and
reproduction)
• Increased demand for environmental controls

• Change in storm sewer runoff design
• Mitigation of soil erosion
• Mitigation of flooding potential
• Impact on insurance risk and claims

For those who doubt or wish to dismiss the evidence that climate is
changing ….the data from our own Minnesota landscape indicate it is
happening and already producing consequences. It is clearly poor
judgment to ignore this!

  • 14. Consequences of Warm Winters and Higher Minimum Temperatures • Change in depth and duration of soil and lake freezing • More rapid breakdown of crop residues • Later fall nitrogen applications (soil temp too high) • Change in survival rates of insect pests, parasites, plant pathogens, and soil microbes • Reduced energy use for heating (HDD) • Increased number of freeze/thaw cycles (damaged roads) • Change in Plant Hardiness Zones • Longer growing seasons • Change in exposure times to mold and allergens

Consequences of Increased Frequency in Tropical-like Dew Points • Seasonal dynamics of pathogen, parasite, insect, and microorganism populations • Increased workload in heat related health care (exposure differentials, MS, COPD, Obesity) • Increased stress on livestock (change in feed ration, water, weight gain, mild production and reproduction) • Increased demand for environmental controls

Editor's Notes

  1. Mean annual temperature values in Minnesota are more steeply upward in the past three decades based on all observations in the state.
  2. Minnesota’s annual precipitation from all observers. Recent years have included a high frequency of surplus precipitation values on a statewide basis.
  3. Geographic distribution of annual precipitation has changed over time. Today, more than half of the state has an annual average precipitation of 29 inches or greater.
  4. Upper trend in the mixing depth of the troposphere can lead to stronger convection, especially at higher latitude positions.
  5. There have been three one thousand year rainfall events in southeastern Minnesota counties since 2004.
  6. In 2012 Minnesota reported 55 counties eligible for federal disaster assistance due to drought, and 11 counties eligible for federal assistance for flood. This was the 2nd time in state history that parts of the state were eligible for polar opposite federally declared disasters (drought and flood) in the same year (2007 was the other case).
  7. The St Louis River at Scanlon, MN. Gage data from 1908-2013 shows the all-time peak was reached in June, 2012 at 45,000 cfs, and the all-time low discharge in November, 2012 at 458 cfs.
  8. Dismissing or ignoring climate change and its consequences is the wrong thing to do at this time. At the very least we must plan for climate change adaptation and come up with strategies, city by city, watershed by watershed, region by region.
