THE NATIONAL DIGITAL STEWARDSHIP RESIDENCY

3. • “The mission of the National Digital Stewardship
Residency (NDSR) is to build a dedicated community of
professionals who will advance our nation's capabilities in
managing, preserving, and making accessible the digital
record of human achievement.”
• Develop stewards to collect, manage, and preserve
digital assets
• Develop a model for post-graduate level residency
programs that combine training and hands-on work in
digital stewardship
• Benefit host institutions in establishing or extending
digital stewardship projects and programs
THE NDSR: GOALS
4. • Applicants must have received graduate-level degree
within one year of application
• NDSR DC program will support 10 residents for 9-month
residencies starting in September 2013
• Residents attend a two-week, intensive workshop at start
of their residency
• Residents then work in 10 local institutions on specific
projects related to digital stewardship
• Ongoing lectures, training, and collaboration

5. • Build an alumni network of digital stewards
• Support next generation of digital stewards in building
skills, portfolio, and professional network
• Create an extensible model for post-graduate residency
programs in digital initiatives
• Create a model for immersive, extensive curriculum and
training in post-graduate-level
• Support institutional efforts to expand digital stewardship
activities through resident staffing
THE NDSR: INTENDED OUTCOMES
7. • IMLS LB21 2013 grants awarded for Boston and New
York NDSR programs ($498K each); June 2013-2016
• NDSR Boston: Harvard Library (lead; Andrea Goethels,
PI), partnering with MIT Libraries (Nancy McGovern)
• NDSR NYC: METRO (lead; me, PI), partnering with
Brooklyn Historical Society (Jacob Nadal)
• Both PIs are members of NDSA Working Group co-chairs
and involved in the digital preservation community
• Both projects will collaborate closely with each other and
with LC and IMLS
THE NDSR: EXPANSION TO BOSTON & NYC
8. • Three year grant starting June 2013
• Year 1 – planning
• Year 2 – 5 residents in 5 institutions
• Year 3 – 5 residents in 5 institutions
• Residencies coordinated & overseen by METRO in
concert with hosts
• Program will feature ongoing lectures, training
workshops, site visits, social and special events
• All training materials will be make public

• Residents – paid $36K + professional development
money for 9 month residency
• 74% of grant funding going to resident support
• Program features one-week immersion workshop,
ongoing seminar series, continued education, and a
capstone event highlighting student work

10. • A new generation of digital stewards trained in the technical,
conceptual, and practical competencies of digital stewardship.
• Increased institutional capacity for digital stewardship by meeting the
need for new professionals with a mix of conceptual knowledge,
hands-on, practical skills, and workplace experience.
• Involve host institutions in a network of knowledge-sharing,
collaboration, and professional development built around digital
stewardship to create new opportunities for collective engagement
and action on preserving digital collections.
• Develop a sustainable, extensible model for postgraduate
residencies combining advanced training and experiential learning by
working closely with other NDSR programs to ensure it is replicable
and scalable for potential use nationwide.
