3. Municipal Solid Waste
• “Trash” or
“Garbage”
• Consists of common
household waste, as
well as office and
retail waste.
• Excludes industrial,
hazardous and
construction waste.
4. Solid Waste Management In Developing Countries
• Developing countries are seriouly facing
the problems in solid waste management
due to unplanned developments in major cities.
• Environmental and sanitary conditions are
becoming very complex
• In india, according to the ministry of the
environment 55000 tons of solid waste is
being generated on daily basis in urban areas.
• About 60% of this generated solid waste is
being properly collected.
• There is no city in India having proper waste
collection and disposal system for municipal
waste.
5. Steps Of Solid Waste Management
• Collection of waste
• Transportation of waste
• Recycling of waste
• Treatment of waste
• Disposal of waste
6. • Collection of waste
a) House- to- house collection system
b) Community bin system
• Transportation of waste
Various types of vehicles are used based on the requiremens.
• Recycling of waste
It is method by which wastes can be further used through reprocessing.
• Treatment of waste
a) Physical treatment
b) Chemical treatment
c) Biological treatment
• Disposal of waste
a) Open dumping
b) Sanitary landfills
c) Ocean dumping
d) Incineration
e) Composting
f) Pyrolysis
g) Gasification OPEN DUMPING
10. Initiatives And Technologies Adopted In India
Management of solid waste hast received attention from central and state
government.
The early initiatives of Government of India on urban solid waste management
primarily focused on promoting composting of urban municipal solid waste.
The various initiatives taken by government, NGOs, private companies, and local
public drastically increased in the past few decades.
On jan. 25, 1996, National Solid Waste Association of India (NSWAI) was
established and is the only non-profit organisation.
Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has published guidelines for the disposal of
plastic waste.

13. CONCLUSION
Municipal solid waste (MSW), is a waste type consisting of
everyday items that are discarded by the public.
Once collected, municipal solid waste may be treated in order to
reduce the total volume and weight of material that requires
final disposal. Treatment changes the form of the waste and
makes it easier to handle.
The best way to reduce the amount of waste is to take steps to
generate less waste in the first place, very small changes in
the of living can make great effect
We can buy products that use less packaging or are packaged in
recyclable materials.
