2. Definition
Aortic insufficiency is a heart valve
disease where the aortic valve no
longer functions adequately to
control the flow of blood from the
left ventricle into the aorta.
Commonly, aortic insufficiency
shows no symptoms for many
years. Symptoms may then occur
gradually or suddenly. Surgical
repair or replacement of the aortic
valve corrects aortic insufficiency.
3. Etiology
Common etiologies include drug overdose, neuromuscular
disease, chest wall abnormalities, and severe airway disorders
(eg, asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease [COPD]).
Respiratory failure may be further classified as either acute or
chronic
An injury to chest or ribs. A drug or alcohol overdose, which can
harm brain and breathing. Lung damage from breathing in fumes
or smoke. Lung disease or infection, like chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease (COPD), cystic fibrosis, or pneumonia
4. Reasons
Lung and airway diseases such as
asthma, cystic fibrosis, COPD, and
interstitial lung diseases. Fluid
buildup in the lungs or pulmonary
embolism (a blood clot in lungs)
Infections in brain or spinal cord
(such as meningitis ), lungs (such
as pneumonia), or airways (such as
bronchiolitis)
5. Diagnosis
A doctor may diagnose with respiratory failure based on the
oxygen and carbon dioxide levels in blood, a physical exam to see
how fast and shallow breathing is and how hard working to
breathe, as well as the results of lung function tests.
If diagnosed with a serious lung disease such as respiratory
failure, may need extra oxygen through tubes in nose or support
with a breathing machine called a Ventilator.
6. Diagnosis
Palpation is the tactile examination of the chest from which can be elicited tenderness,
asymmetry, diaphragmatic excursion, crepitus, and vocal fremitus. Local tenderness can indicate
trauma or costochondritis.
Percussion produces sounds on a spectrum from flat to dull depending on the density of the
underlying tissue. Areas of well-aerated lung will be resonant, or tympanic, to percussion.
Auscultation of the respiratory system is a noninvasive, safe, easy-to-perform, and one of the
oldest diagnostic techniques used by physiotherapists and physicians to diagnose various
pulmonary diseases and assess the quality and changes in a patients lungs. It is performed using a
Stethoscope
9. Treatment
Treatments for
respiratory failure may
include oxygen therapy,
medicines, and
procedures to help lungs
rest and heal. Chronic
respiratory failure can
often be treated at
home
