At first view developing with Flex looks pretty easy and comfortable for Flash developers. But that Impression is misleading since some features of Flex have to be savoured with caution. Florian delivers in his talk a conceptional view into the Flex Framework und shows up when it makes sense to use Flex and what hurdles there are to master when switching from Flash to Flex.

Wikipedia is often used a source of surface forms, or alternative reference strings for an entity, required for entity linking, disambiguation or coreference resolution tasks. Surface forms have been extracted in a number of works from Wikipedia labels, redirects, disambiguations and anchor texts of internal Wikipedia links, which we complement with anchor texts of external Wikipedia links from the Common Crawl web corpus. We tackle the problem of quality of Wikipedia-based surface forms, which has not been raised before. We create the gold standard for the dataset quality evaluation, which reveales the surprisingly low precision of the Wikipedia-based surface forms. We propose filtering approaches that allowed boosting the precision from 75% to 85% for a random entity subset, and from 45% to more than 65% for the subset of popular entities. The filtered surface form dataset as well the gold standard are made publicly available.

Presented at CHI 2013 in Paris, France by Madeline E. Smith & Victoria Schwanda Sosik on May 2, 2013. Full Paper: Baumer, E.P.S., Adams, P., Khovanskaya, V., Liao, T., Smith, M.E., Sosik, V.S., and Williams, K. (2013). Limiting, Leaving, and (re)Lapsing: An Exploration of Facebook Non-Use Practices and Experiences. In Proceedings of CHI '13. PDF: http://goo.gl/oKC4d Abstract: use such sites. This paper presents results from a questionnaire of over 400 Internet users, focusing specifically on Facebook and those users who have left the service. Results show the lack of a clear, binary distinction between use and non-use, that various practices enable diverse ways and degrees of engagement with and disengagement from Facebook. Furthermore, qualitative analysis reveals numerous complex and interrelated motivations and justifications, both for leaving and for maintaining some type of connection. These motivations include: privacy, data misuse, productivity, banality, addiction, and external pressures. These results not only contribute to our understanding of online sociality by examining this under-explored area, but they also build on previous work to help advance how we conceptually account for the sociological processes of non-use.

Practice privacy by design, not privacy by disaster! See the talk here: http://caseorganic.com/articles/2014/02/12/1/designing-for-privacy-in-mobile-and-web-apps-at-interaction-14-in-amsterdam Almost every application requires some gathering of personal data today. Where that data is stored, who has access to it, and what is done with that data later on is becoming increasingly important as more and more of our data lives online today. Privacy disasters are costly and can be devastating to a company. UX designers and developers need to have a framework for protecting user data, communicating it to users, and making sure that the entire process is smoothly handled. This talk covers best practices for designing web and mobile apps with the privacy of individual users in mind. Privacy has been an even bigger issue with location-based apps, and we ran into it head-first when we began work on Geoloqi (now part of Esri). Designing an interface that made one's personal empowering instead of creepy was our goal. The stories from our design decisions with our application will also be included in this talk.

Who? Menoovr is a startup currently in "alpha" that allows its users to ask for tips easily, securely and anonymously at any given location and receive the best answers from people around them. What? This is the presentation team Menoovr gave at Startup Weekend San Jose on Apr 17, 2011 after being embraced by customers (users and businesses) by raving fan reviews. When? We are feverishly working to make menoovr available to you soon and when we do so we want it to match your expectation to the "T". Where? Menoovr was created at Startup Weekend San Jose held at Hotel De Anza and was welcomed with raving fan reviews from businesses and users such as yourself . Why? Menoovr's goal is to make your time sensitive life easy by giving you instant answers where you need it and in the time frame you need it in, so you can use your time for the better things in life. As traffic volumes in cities around the world are constantly growing we are faced with the challenge to track and control car movements in a more detailed and intelligent way to beat the traffic. Real-time information on traffic including automotive sensors and crowd-sourced data feeds are an interesting new source of data. However, to utilize this data to its full extent and turn it into valuable information, intelligent methods for analyzing and predicting traffic are needed. Pivotal’s Data Science Team has developed several innovative methods to analyze this traffic flow information harvested from real-time and in-car data sources including GPS. These methods by themselves are highly useful for predicting future traffic conditions and dissecting traffic data. We will describe how we created these algorithms and show different interesting results from their application. This example demonstrates how deeper insights into a problem can be found by combining different machine learning methods. The methods developed by our team enable more intelligent routing systems through a more detailed velocity prediction based on a number of influencing factors. This is highly valuable for planning routes to far-away destinations and also useful on inner-city routes where traffic can be influenced by a lot of different factors. However, we recently tapped another valuable source of data that could enrich traffic prediction models even further. Local transport authorities already make a lot of traffic and travel disruption freely available. These reports form the basis of traffic updates across a wide range of media. Currently however the reports are limited to acknowledging the start of a disruption, and then providing updates as the situation develops. In the smart city of the future these disruption reports will also predict the duration and severity of the disruptions, enabling route guidance systems to make better decisions. We will also demonstrate a traffic disruption model that can predict the duration of recently begun incidents, learning the distinct traffic and disruption patterns of a major global city. The disruption prediction model incorporates historical traffic count data, previous incident reports and local weather conditions and uses an interesting variety of machine learning methods running on a massively parallel analytics database system. We will conclude by outlining how the crowd-sourced real-time data could be matched to traffic disruption and open government data, to push the envelope in traffic analysis and prediction even further.
