Promoting Positive behaviour Policy
Children and adults flourish best in an ordered environment in which everyone knows what to
expect of them and children are free to develop their play and learning without fear of being
hurt or hindered by anyone else. We aim to work towards a situation in which children can
develop self-discipline and self-esteem in an atmosphere of mutual respect and
encouragement.
The Nursery should strive to achieve this by
• rules governing the conduct of the group and the behaviour of the children will be
discussed and agreed at the nursery and explained to all newcomers both children
and adults.
• all adults will ensure that the rules are applied consistently so that children have
the security of knowing what to expect and can build up useful habits of
behaviour.
• all adults will provide a positive role model for the children with regards to
respect, behaviours, inappropriate language, care and courtesy.
• staff will take active steps to ensure that children receive positive attention for
appropriate behaviours.
conflicts between children will be dealt with in a problem solving manner that will
involve the children and staff. Staff will help pupils overcome any conflicts that
may occur between the children in a supportive, encouraging and positive way.
When children behave in challenging ways, one to one adult support will be given to help the
child understand the problem and work towards more positive behaviour.
• Where appropriate this might be achieved by a period of 'time out' in a quiet area
of the room.
• Undesirable attitudes will be noted and support will be given through explanation
and encouragement rather than through personal blame.
• In any case of misbehaviour it will always be made clear to the child in question
that it is the behaviour and not the child that is unwelcome.
• Any behaviour problems will be handled in an appropriate fashion respecting the
individual children's level of development, understanding and maturity.
• Staff should try to involve parents to promote and reinforce positive behaviour.
• A reward system may help e.g. using stickers.
• With particular challenging behaviour it may be useful to concentrate on the
positive and use praise to reinforce good behaviour.
• Nursery staff with liaise with parents to help build on the child's positive image.
• Adults will be aware that some kinds of behaviour may arise from a child's
additional support needs.
Recurring problems will be dealt with in partnership with the child’s parents
initially in the form of an informal meeting.

• Parents and staff must meet to evaluate and discuss the best strategies to support
the child's needs.
• If after using these strategies staff and parents both feel that the child's needs still
have not been met then it may be necessary to involve other professionals.
The nursery should ensure that staff and parents are fully aware of the promoting positive
behaviour policy.
