2. Introduction
This tasks is aimed to address two educational context to
stablish similarities and differences between them as well
as to identify major resources of constraint in developing
them. Also identifying particular challenges that must be
taken into account in order to design a successful course.
3. Defining the contexts and
Target Population
Context A
Institution Educative
Francisco Jose de Caldas.
40 students from 6 grade.
Context B
Corales School, Cartagena.
15 students of primary.
4. Social Aspects
Institution Educative Francisco
Jose de Caldas, is in Colombia,
Buenaventura city – Valle
department.
They are 40 students in this
grade 6-5, from which 12 of
these students are girls and 28
are children, the age of these
students are between 13 to 16
years old. All of them are from
the same culture that is African
descents and they don´t speak
and don´t have families who
speak English. 98% of this
population lives in
neighborhoods and vulnerable
situations as most are displaced
by violence and other their
economic situation is difficult and
chaotic.
The teacher ifs from
Buenaventura and she has 13
year of experiences in teaching
English.
Context A Context B
Corales School is a two- story
building and it has up to 5th grade
and there are up 20 students per
classroom. It is located in a stratus
3 neighborhood in which all of the
children in there are from the
neighborhood.
This are students who don’t seem
to have any struggle for going to
school. The neighborhood and
surroundings are relatively safe
and it is very quite at all time of
the day.
Non of the parents but only one
could actually speak English.
5. Similarities and differences of target
population
Contexts A differs from B in many things. The ages and the
type of social background in which the school is located
contrasts to the violent-free environment that surrounds the
school described in context B.
One more thing that differs from each other is the race. In
context B there is only one student that is African-
Colombian and his sin is pretty dark. The rest of them are
brunette.
6. Physical Settings
Francisco José de Caldas
institution, is located in the
neighborhood Jorge, Main Street
N 2-12 and has a space in line to
meet the educational population;
It has a comfortable semi school
cafeteria, bathrooms and shops
to buy.
It has all educational level
kindergarten, primary and
secondary. Classrooms are
bright and these are in good
condition, few chairs and
lounges, classroom do not have
TV in classroom and less bean
video, also there aren´t
specialized classrooms for
English classes.
Context A Context B
Corales School is a primary school
located in a stratus 3 neighborhood
in which all of the children in
there are from the neighborhood.
All the classrooms have tables and
chair appropriate to children ages.
The lighting is also appropriate.
The classrooms and the school are
all decorated with poster and
handwork made by children. There
are seven classrooms, a computer
room and administrative office.
There is a little front yard and a
backyard both with a swing where
children go during the break time.
7. Similarities and differences in physical
settings
Classroom are comfortable for the children in both contexts
because they are very bright.
The classroom in context b are the only ones provided with
speaker system. Also this is the only one that has a
computer area for the children.
The classrooms in context B are better decorated in
comparison with those in context A.
8. Teaching resources
At Institution Educative
Francisco Jose de Caldas
professor of English makes their
pedagogical practices with a
book and which takes
photocopies, as also back on the
board and makes his students to
copy from the board, based on
the grammatical part. not binding
ICT strategies and tools that
enable a richer learning or other
means to make classes more
dynamic.
Context A Context B
At Corales School, teacher
mostly applied total physical
response with the students. For
the development of the class
the teacher has a book provided
by the school. The teacher also
searches on line for materials
and ideas to implement in the
English class. Students are not
required to have English books.
9. Similarities and differences in teaching
resources
Only one of the Contexts describe having technological
resources as tv and speaker system. This means that the
teacher can have access to a wider range of activities.
Even though students don’t have books in any of the
contexts, in context B the teacher does follow a guide
provided by the same school.
10. Class Time
Context A
Each course has a time
intensity in the field of
English 3 hours per week, is
thought to be insufficient to
meet the commitments in
learning a second language.
another situation is that most
of the classes match days
Monday and much time is
wasted because there are
two holidays coming months
Monday, so much time is
wasted.
Context B
English classes are conducted
for primary students on
Tuesdays and Thursdays from
9am to 10: 30 am. There is a
special English activity that is
always held on Fridays in
addition to their normal
English class schedule.
Students have a closure of
the school year in November.
This year is on November
21st. All of the students in the
school participate.
11. Similarities and differences in classes
time
In contrast with context A, in context B the time invested to
teach <English to kids is wider. They include extra activities
to encourage the children to get more involved in the
language.
Students in context A can barely comply with the necessary
number of ours to meet requirements and there is no much
interest from the institution to promote learning english.
12. 1. After analyzing your context does anything
stand out that will be a major resource or
constraint in developing your course?
Although there are some situations that do not allow education to one
hundred percent (specialized classrooms, specialized teachers,
schedules, etc.). I think Francisco Jose de Caldas, in Buenaventura -
Valle, offers guarantees to provide good teaching-learning process in
English to their students due to both teachers and administrators are
working toward excellence and improvement of the institution and
that is a very good projection of the institution
Context A
13. The major resource in is the child-friendly environment and
children respond to the teachers instructions. Their
motivation toward the language is an advantage for
teachers who can try a wider range of activities.
In primary grades students listen to lots of songs and
they play lots of games too. Total Physical response is
the method followed by the teacher with these
students. This was clearly noticed in the class
observation.
Students loves the rhythms and chants the Teacher plays in
class and this can be used to streghten listening skills.
Context B
14. 2. Can you identify particular challenges that you
will need to address in order to design a
successful course?
At this school, the main challenge is the lack of interest
from the students toward learning English and the little
interest from the school to get the best out of school.
Students families are concerned about other issues much
more instant for them as providing nourishment to their
children. A few students have little support from their
parents at home because most of them work. To design
the course is important to take this into account.
Context A
15. What might be a challenge is to make the parents get more
involved. Students at Corales School are all by themselves with
the English the teacher use in class. Parents don’t speak English
and this means there is no continuous support in the family.
Its important to consider this in my analysis and curriculum
proposal because I need to consider a way to make the parents
get more involved in their children language learning process.
Context B
16. What is meant by
Context?
Context is the description of all those rages of
conditions that influence negatively or possitively in
the way the children learn. The factors to be
evaluated by the educator to define the context are
related to issues such as socio-cultural, etnoghrafic,
educational, geographical and actitudinal among
others.
17. Why it is important to define
one´s context?
It´s important to identify the context because it helps
educators deal with challenges.
It is important for educators to define the context to
identify possible drawbacks and strenghts to carry out
a curriculumm design.
It also helps the the educator find the best way to
approach the learners in class and to understand
behavioral situations.
It is important to identify the context because it
serves as guide for the educator to identify what
should be the starting point to achieve knowledge
learning in the learners.
