4. Notice to Airmen (NOTAM)
NOTAM
2010
Put in place in 1947
2010 > 1 M texts per year
2015 FAA posted 2 M NOTAMS
Uses codes and mostly free text
Not meant to be displayed on a map
10. EUROCONTROL Guidelines2016
“The Digital NOTAM concept and AIXM version 5.1 were
developed jointly by EUROCONTROL and the Federal Aviation
Administration of the United States (FAA). Prototyping activities
at EUROCONTROL and SESAR
and in OGC testbeds and by industry have
demonstrated the technical feasibility of the
Digital NOTAM project….”

24. Goal
The pilot will advance the implementation of the S-121 data
model and architecture, and will implement operational
prototypes to support the creation, management,
integration, dissemination and onward use of official data
for maritime baselines, limits, zones and boundaries. Will
support:
– Country level publication, as a national obligation, of
their maritime baselines, limits and boundaries
– Standards-based geospatial interoperability between
supplier, user and partners, within and across
governments, public and commercial users
– Facilitating strategic awareness and operational
decision making in the maritime environment supporting
good governance and effective and efficient operations
25. Phase 1 will focus
on advancing GIS
Applications to
implement the S-121
Data Model. The
primary task is to
develop a GML
Application Schema
that properly
represents the data
model. GIS
Applications, based
on the GML
Application Schema,
will read raw data
and convert it to S-
121.

28. Data
The Canada’s 2013 Atlantic submission to the UN’
Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf.
Encoding of the files must support multi-lingual
outputs and at a minimum both official languages of
Canada (English and French). Data is available at
the UNEP GRID-Arendal (Continental Shelf Program)
website (see entry #70).
Territorial Sea Geographical Coordinates Order -
C.R.C., c. 1550. The conversion files must support
multi-lingual outputs and at a minimum both
official languages of Canada (English and French).
-> OGC will support on the translation

Worst aviation crisis sep 2011
Iceland lies on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a very highly volatile boundary between the Eurasian and North American continental plates.
In those days and since 1947, when a disaster occurred, the mechanics aviation authorities had to alter the aircraft pilots of potential hazards along a flight route was by using the Notice to AirMen (NOTAM)

After prototyping using the org process, we were to demonstrate that we can display the message with the proper geospatial contextual.
Display the geometry and of course the message
OGC worked with EUROCONTROL and FAA to prototype a solution not only for the problem of notification of texts, but other issues
A prototype server
A prototype client
An application schema
A middleware application
An executable test suite
A report that captures work done and recommendations, trade study etc.
Influence the technology with specific requirements and advance market solutions (models and implementation) related to maritime limits and boundaries.
Get early insights from experts about the proposed model implementation and architecture.
Improve visibility as a global leader in the maritime domain by advancing interoperable solutions.
Leverage investment of a pool of sponsors by funding a more robust pilot (e.g. more servers and clients) while complementing your requirements with other sponsors’ requirements.

The Arctic encompasses a number of shipping routes, grouped into a Northwest Passage and a Northeast Passage
Each passage crosses a number of Large Marine Ecosystems (LMEs), potentially impacting their large amount of wildlife species by disturbances and implications from shipping activity
