6. • Fabio was looking to provide a personal experience to
students in his large classes
• Also wanted the technology to create an open dialogue
of continuous feedback with students and to increase
their ability to self-assess

7. • With TurningPoint, Fabio was able to gain insight as to
how his pedagogy was unravelling throughout the year
• With the data gathered through TurningPoint, he
produced learning analytics and pedagogical research

8. • During lectures, Fabio uses TurningPoint to ask revision questions at the
beginning of lecture to get a sense of how he taught the previous lesson
• He then asked questions to determine the students understanding as they
proceed through material
• At the end of each lecture, Fabio asks Likert scale questions to see how the
students got on and to measure any difficulty they may be experiencing
• With this data, Fabio produces a PDF report that is posted to the
Blackboard VLE where he comments on student feedback and provides
suggestions to further their improvement

9. • Fabio held focus groups to identify the power of TurningPoint in eliciting
self-confidence and self-efficacy skills.
• Almost all students recognised the role of ResponseCards as a powerful
self-assessment tool.
• Those who did not, at least felt empowered to have a voice.
• Last year, about 50% of Fabio’s students were international and due to
cultural issues, those students were not as vocal – TurningPoint gave this
minority a voice

12. James Wilson has pioneered the use of interactive
theatre in health care education, which has led to
the innovation affectionately known as ‘clicker’s
theatre’

13. • Started using TurningPoint in the classroom to test knowledge,
expel myths and spark debates and dialogue with his students
• In recent times, he has integrated the use of interactive theatre
processes and TurningPoint to produce an innovative way for the
mental health student audience to interact with the presented piece of
theatre

14. • ResponseCards are given to the audience, and a play is acted in front of
them (typically a play outlining a serious mental health issue)
• The play would pause at various intervals and the students would chose
the action the actors would take, according to best practice. The play
would then continue
• In giving the students this opportunity, their learning was enhanced
and they were fully involved in the direction of the play, thus seeing the
consequences of their decisions
• This produced a sense of democracy as everyone had a vote, and
evoked debate amongst the various groups who wanted to explore
different options

15. • The evaluation by the participants was overwhelmingly
positive and has led to a national award and three
county level awards for excellence in teaching. It has
also been disseminated at a national level conference and
two local level conferences
• The evaluation data from both projects showed extremely
high levels of active learning and engagement
