3. Discussion Questions
How do you characterize Hilly? (do you think she can be a good wife/mother and at
the same time a deeply flawed person?
Like Hilly, Skeeter’s mother is an example of someone deeply flawed, yet somewhat
sympathetic. How is the mother’s feelings for Constantine displayed? Is she a
sympathetic woman or unsympathetic?
Skeeter has a relationship with Stuart but eventually discovers that he is not ‘ready’ for
her? How do you understand this?
Minnie does something that is not worth bragging about to Hilly, yet spared her mother
from the experience. Why did she do this? How do you judge her (Minnie)?
Aibileen has a warm relationship with Celia’s daughter. Describe how that can both be
worthy and painful.
Being The Help in the 60’s was not easy; there was much discrimination and difficulties
then. How do you compare it to the profession today, for The Help in our lives,
communities?
4. Gerunds and infinitives
Have a look at these sentences:
Aibileen enjoyed taking care of Celia’s daughter.
Minnie was good at cooking chocolate pies.
In those times, it was important for The Help to raise
their employer’s children.
Skeeter wasn’t able to find Constantine.
Charlotte (Skeeter’s mother) found it difficult to accept
that Skeeter did not want to marry.
Accepting Skeeter’s ideas was impossible for Hilly.
