What are numbers used for?
The different ways we work with numbers are through:
Counting
Numbers are used to count how many things there are.
e.g. how many eggs?
Measuring
Numbers are used to measure things on a numerical scale.
e.g. weight, volume and area.
Labelling
Numbers are used to label things.
The number could be replaced by a name as it isn’t measuring anything.
e.g. a bus or telephone number.
Ordering
Numbers are used to order things.
The number might be seen as a label, but the order matters.
e.g. door numbers along a street.
