and abundant rainfall. Shanghai enjoys a sub‐tropical monsoon climate. It has abundant rainfall and
sunshine. Its extreme high and low temperature are 40.2 ℃ and ‐12.1℃ respectively since it has a mild
and humid climate.
Its spring and autumn are relatively short compared with summer and winter. The average annual
temperature is 16 degrees Celsius. Except for a few hills lying in the southwest corner, most parts of
the Shanghai area are flat and belong to the alluvial plain of the Yangtze River Delta. The average sea
level elevation is about four meters. Dotted with many rivers and lakes, the Shanghai area is known for
its rich water resources.

Yuyuan Garden
Yuyuan Garden is a famous classical garden located in Anren Jie, Shanghai. It was finished in 1577 by a
government officer of the Ming Dynasty (1368‐1644) named Pan Yunduan. Yu in Chinese means
pleasing and satisfying, and this garden was specially built for Pan's parents as a place for them to enjoy
a tranquil and happy time in their old age.
Yuyuan Garden occupies an area of 20,000 square meters. The pavilions, halls, rockeries, ponds and
cloisters all have unique characteristics. There are six main scenic areas here: Sansui Hall, Wanhua
Chamber, Dianchun Hall, Huijing Hall, Yuhua Hall and the Inner Garden. Each area features several
scenic spots within its borders.
The spring and summer blossoms bring a fragrant and floral aspect to the gardens, especially in the
luxurious petals of its Magnolia grandiflora. Other trees include the Luohan pine, bristling with thick
needles, willows, gingkos, cherry trees and magnificent dawn redwoods.

Shanghai Old Street
Shanghai Old Street, historically called Miaoqian Dajie, is an old business street that has a
combination of tourist attractions, shops, entertainment and cultural exhibits. It owes its special social
attractions and rich commercial background to the fact that the earliest bank, gold shop, jeweler's
store, wine shop and tea house of the city were all to be found here.
There are about 225 stores here, each designed carefully according to its function. Shops purveying
handicraft articles, paintings, calligraphies and jewelry are well‐appointed and give you plenty of
variety from which to choose what you want. On the eastern part, old shops such as the Tong Han
Chun Pharmacy, Lao Tong Sheng Food Store, Wu Liang Cai Glass Shop, De Shun restaurant, take you
back to the Shanghai of 100 years ago. By contrast at the western end of the street is where items of folk
culture may be bought. The antique shops, embroidery houses and wonderful fabric shops symbolize
the commercial prosperity of the area.

Old City God's Temple
During the Ming Dynasty, Zhangshouyue, the head of Shanghai County, dedicated a temple to the
local city god. Since then, the City God's Temple has been destroyed several times and the current
temple was built in 1926.
There are many well‐known Shanghai local drinks available in Chenghuang Ancient Street, together
with national and foreign tourists who favor visiting this place to gain the Shanghai food experience.
The unusual dim sum in Lubolang Cafe, the Chinese vegetable cooked in Songyuelou, the Babao rice
banquet in Songyuelou, and also the Nanxiang Chinese are very special, all these can be found in the
ancient street.
when the Sanxun festival (a day when the chenghuang god started to inspect his people) comes, nearly
all the people will come to the chenghuang temple to burn incense and worship the Chenghuang god,
while all shops inside or near the chenghuang temple are decorated with red lanterns to celebrate the
festival. In addition, some folk arts, like cockfighting, penmanship performance and acrobatics, are
fairly attractive.

Jade Buddha Temple
During the reign of the Guangxu Emperor (r. 1875–1908) in the Qing dynasty, Huigen, a Buddhist
monk from Mount Putuo, went on a pilgrimage to Tibet via Mount Wutai and Mount Emei. He visited
Burma after leaving Tibet. Whilst there, Chen Jun‐Pu, an overseas Chinese resident in Burma, donated
five jade Buddha statues to Huigen, who transported two of them back to Jiang‐wan, Shanghai. Here,
Huigen had a temple built with donated funds, and died shortly thereafter.
Both the Sitting Buddha and the Recumbent Buddha are carved with whole white jade. The sparkling
and crystal‐clear white jade gives the Buddhas the beauty of sanctity and make them more vivid.
Just opposite the temple gate, there stands a giant screen wall. various designs, such as dragon, phoenix,
elephant, crane and peony are carved on it. in chinese legend, all these things are considered the
symbols of fortune, wealth, longevity and auspiciousness. chinese people used to set up a wall in front
of the house so as to keep the evils away.

The Oriental Pearl TV Tower
Shanghai Oriental Pearl TV Tower was completed on Oct. 1, 1994. It  is 468 meters high, the highest TV
tower in Asia and the third highest in the world. It has become a symbolic architecture and a favorable
spot for tourists in Shanghai.
Built with eleven steel spheres in various sizes hanging from the blue sky to the green grassland, the
body of the tower creates an admirable image, which is described in an ancient Chinese verse as: large
and small pearls dropping on a plate of jade.
The Aerial Sightseeing Corridor‐Walking on the Clouds located in the 2nd sphere of the tower, 259
meters off the ground, visitors get a panorama view of the Huangpu River through the transparent glass
under their feet. It is like walking on the clouds.
The cruise sightseeing on the Huangpu River is the new item of the Oriental Pearl Tower. Taking the
luxurious cruise, you can enjoy fantastic scenes of both sides of the river.

Jin Mao Tower
Completed in 1999.The 420‐meter‐high Jin Mao Tower was China’s tallest building at the time of its
completion and today remains its most iconic. Recalling historic pagoda forms, with setbacks that
create a rhythmic pattern, the 88‐story tower has become a model for skyscraper design throughout the
country.
The architect, Adrian D. Smith, of this skyscraper ingeniously combined the elements of traditional
Chinese culture with the newest architectural styles of the time, which makes it one of the best‐
constructed buildings in China. It offers retail shopping at its base, offices above, and the Grand Hyatt
Hotel occupies the upper 38 floors.
Advanced structural engineering techniques protect the building from the typhoons and earthquakes
typical of the area. The structure’s metal‐and‐glass curtain wall reflects the city’s constantly changing
skies, while at night the tower shaft and crown are illuminated.

Shanghai World Financial Center
Standing in the center of Lujiazui Finance & Trade Zone in Pudong and neighbouring Shanghai
and Jinmao Tower, Shanghai World Financial Center (SWFC) was completed in August 28, 2008, being
the second tallest skyscraper in mainland China.
With an east‐meets‐west design so that the building somewhat resembles a pagoda, the Jinmao follows
a multi‐use model. It offers retail shopping at its base, offices above, and the Grand Hyatt Hotel
occupies the upper 38 floors.
There is also a beautiful sight of the whole city from the Park Hyatt Hotel. The hotel's lobby, with
cocktail bar, is on the 87th floor, overlooking Pudong. Overlooking the entire city from the 100 Century
Avenue Restaurant on the 91st floor appeals to all senses, with a perfect perspective to see the top of the
near neighbor Jinmao Building, the full extent of Pudong and the Oriental Pearl Tower as well as many
symbolic landmarks of Shanghai.

Shanghai Tower
Shanghai Tower is in Lujiazui Finance and Trade Zone of Pudong, withShanghai World Financial
Center to the east and Jin Mao Tower to the north. At present, the tower has been finished, standing
632 meters (about 2,073 feet) high and ranking as China's tallest building and second only to the world
at large. The foot print takes up 30,368 square meters (about 326,878 square feet) with floor space of
about 576,000 square meters (about 6,200,012 square feet), with 5 basement levels, 127 floors above
ground and 5 podium floors. Visitors can take the express elevator to the sightseeing deck on the 119th
floor directly and a whole ride only takes 55 seconds.

The Bund
The Bund, also called Zhongshan Dong Yi Lu (East Zhongshan 1st Road), is a famous waterfront and
regarded as the symbol of Shanghai for hundreds of years. Before the 1840s, the Bund was a muddy
narrow lane with tall reeds. It initially became a British settlement. After Shanghai was established as
the trading port in 1846, a street was paved there and the riversides were reinforced. Then, rows of
commercial buildings were constructed.
As the UK Concession, a building boom at the end of 19th century and beginning of 20th century led
to the Bund becoming a major financial hub of East Asia. enaissance. It was the centre of the city's
politics, economy and culture more than a hundred years ago, consulates of most countries and many
banks, businesses and newspaper offices were settled there, and that's why we have these art‐like
buildings. The most famous and attractive sight which is at the west side of the Bund are the 26 various
buildings of different architectural styles including Gothic, Baroque, Romanesque, Classicism and the
Renaissance.

Nanjing Road
The main shopping street of China, Nanjing Road, 5.5 km long, begins at the Bund in the east and ends
at the west at the intersection of Jing'an Temple and West Yan'an Street. Today, it is a must‐see
metropolitan destination attracting thousands of fashion‐conscious consumers from around the world.
After the Opium War (1839‐1842), Shanghai became a treaty port. Nanjing Road was first the British
concession, then the international colony. Important large quantities of foreign goods, it has become
the first shopping street of the city.
Over time, Nanjing Road has been restructured and is undergoing significant changes. For shopping,
its eastern end has an all‐weather pedestrian arcade. Traditional department stores no longer dominate
the market as modern shopping malls, specialty stores, theaters and international hotels have
proliferated on both sides of the street.

show the achievement of the city planning and construction. It has many functions, such as exhibition,
reference, research, communication, recreation and entertainment. The main body of the building
covers Shanghai's development from ancient times to the present and beyond
If you’re stunned by Shanghai today, go to see how it will look in 2020. The Shanghai Urban Planning
Exhibition Hall is a short walk across Renmin Square from the magnificent Shanghai Museum, and is
well worth a visit, far more interesting than its name suggests.
Themed with "City, Human, Environment and Development“, the city planning is a hot topic
throughout the world, which concerns city dwellers from any country. The glimpse of present and
future Shanghai can provide much food for thought, as well as enjoyment and a good overview of this
often overwhelming city.

Xintiandi, Shanghai
As a re‐creation born out of the sprawls of Shikumen housing, which is the architectural symbol of
Shanghai in the 20th century. Located at Taicang Road, Huangpu District, Shanghai. Xintiandi has an
active nightlife on weekdays as well as weekends, though romantic settings are more common than
loud music and dance places.
Xintiandi is where "yesterday meets tomorrow in Shanghai today” because of its concept of
construction. It retains the antique walls, tiles and exterior of the Shikumen housing of old Shanghai.
On the other hand, its interior embodies a totally different world of international gallery, bars and
cafes, boutiques or theme restaurants. When you walk into it, you will get the taste of both Shanghai in
the 1920's and the sonic modern lifestyle of urbanites of the 21st century.
Xin Tian Di has become the best place for visitors to appreciate the history and modern life of
Shanghai, and is also a meeting place for local citizens and foreign visitors. Two kilometers away, there
is a place of the same kind, called Tianzifang, which is also a welcoming art street.

Former French Concession
Shanghai is popular for many places and reasons, but the Former French Concession is somewhere on
top of that list. Hugely popular and sought after as the preferred residential address among expats, the
Former French Concession (FFC) has a lot of history and beauty to its credit.
The Former French Concession is the area of Shanghai that was established for the French government
to administer from 1849 until 1946. The tree‐lined avenues and the many fine old houses in the area
still retain an air of the "Paris of the East". In particular, the many wrought iron fences and stair railings
will look familiar to anyone who knows Paris or Montreal.
This has been a fashionable area for well over a century and is now very developed as well. There are
plenty of large buildings, mainly upmarket residential and office towers, quite a few hotels and a
number of enormous shopping malls. At the same time, many of the picturesque older buildings —
even whole neighbourhoods — have been renovated. There are a huge number of boutiques, galleries,
bars and cafes scattered through the area.

Huangpu River Night Cruise Tour (one hour)
The Huangpu River night cruise from 7 pm to 9 pm and each tour is one hour. When the lights are on
the Bund and Pudong, you will see the mother river of Shanghai. Nanpu Bridge, Yangpu Bridge and
Oriental Pearl TV Tower compose of a huge picture scroll. The Bund is the cultural section of Shanghai
that best represents the blending of ancient and modern influences. This renowned waterfront district
is the city's most famous landmark. Local people honor the Huangpu River as Mother River, and as you
view the lights and spectacle from the deck of your evening cruise, you will understand why.

Shanghai Museum
With more than 120,000 first‐class artefacts of national importance, the Shanghai Museum is a top

Ancient Jade, Coins, Ming and Qing Furniture, Seals, and Minority Nationalities . There are so many

Chinese art. Its style and presentation surround visitors with artifacts demonstrating ancient wisdom
and philosophy.
As a Chinese saying goes, it is better to see for oneself than to hear many times. Shanghai Museum
welcomes visitors to see and enjoy Chinese culture.

Shanghai Maglev Train
Shanghai ‐ a booming metropolis in east China ‐ is the first stop of many people when they travel to
China. Want to feel the pulse of the city immediately? It is recommended to take the maglev train if
you are just arriving at Pudong International Airport of the city.
Build with the technological help from Germany, Shanghai Maglev Train (SMT) has been operated
since the end of 2002. It is the world's first and only commercialized maglev train line in operation. It
runs from Pudong International Airport to Longyang Rd. Station located at the intersection of
Longyang Road and Baiyang Road in Pudong New Area. The train reaches speeds of 430 km/hr (267
miles/hr), and the trip takes less than eight minutes.
You will be impressed by the amazingly fast speed of the train and have an exciting first experience in
the city. You'll be feeling a bit whiplashed, but that sense of disorientation hints at the fast‐paced city
that lies ahead. As of now, the Maglev doesn't extend to the rest of the Shanghai.

Wuzhen
Wuzhen lies at the north of Tongxiang City. It is about 50 miles (80 kilometers) from both Hangzhou
and Suzhou, and 87 miles (140 kilometers) from Shanghai. This small town, with its black tiled and
timber framework houses, contrasts sharply with its white walls and gray flagging, bringing to mind a
Chinese ink and wash painting. Whether wandering along the riverside or strolling in the lanes paved
with blue flagstones, you will be deeply impressed by the picturesque scenery and slow lifestyle.
The morning of Wuzhen starts with women washing clothes by the clear river and black wooden
windows propped up. The river running through the town was once the main means of transportation
for local people. If you want to enjoy a peaceful Wuzhen, get up before 7 o'clock in the morning and
have a walk along the street. There are several teahouses by the river, all clean, comfortable and
pleasant. Have glue rice balls as breakfast. Or sip green tea by a teahouse window, while admiring the
pastoral scenery of this ancient riverside town.

Zhouzhuang Water Town
Zhouzhuang, once called Zhenfengli, is affectionately known as the most famous water town in China.
Located in Kunshan City, 30 kilometers southeast of Suzhou in Jiangsu Province.
Zhouzhang is a beautiful, picturesque village of willow‐lined canals that are contiguous with rows of
waterside buildings with whitewashed walls and gray slate roofs, and whose wooden eaves are
upturned in the quintessentially Chinese fashion. "Inland" from the canals and the stone arch bridges
are streets paved with cobblestones.
Since the 12th century, Zhouzhuang has been connected to the Grand Canal, which extends from
Hangzhou in the south to Beijing in the north. This development naturally brought prosperity to the
region of Suzhou.
There are no streets that separate the rows of waterfront houses from the waterways in the town of
Zhouzhuang. In fact, there is no motorized traffic at all in the town of Zhouzhang – one either travels
by gondola, by rickshaw, or by foot.

Qibao Ancient  Water Town
The formation of Qibao Ancient Town can be traced back to the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms
period, to the Northern Song Dynasty. Qibao Ancient Town can satisfy your curiosity about ancient
water townships without the bother of either long distance or the rush of crowds.
Qibao is the Chinese for 'seven treasures' and there are two popular theories about its derivation. The
more reliable one says that the name originates from the Qibao Temple, famed for its good reputation.
It was this that contributed to the growth of business and culture of the previously unknown town. The
other theory seems more popular among the local people who tell folk tales about seven treasures.
These were an iron Buddha made in Ming Dynasty, a bronze bell also dating from the Ming Dynasty
but said to have mysteriously appeared from nowhere, a Gold Script Lotus Sutra written by an imperial
concubine of the 10th century, a one‐thousand‐year‐old Chinese catalpa tree, a jade axe, a gold cockerel
and a pair of jade chopsticks. Actually of these seven treasures, the existence of only first four can be
verified while only the Scripture and the bell have survived to this day.

Zhujiajiao Ancient  Water Town
Located in a suburb of Shanghai city, Zhujiajiao is an ancient water town well‐known throughout the
country, with a history of more than 1700 years. It about 50 miles (90‐minutes’ drive) from Shanghai.
Unique old bridges across bubbling streams, small rivers shaded by willow trees, and houses with
courtyards attached all transport people who have been living amidst the bustle and hustle of the
modern big city to a brand‐new world full of antiquity, leisure and tranquillity.
In the town, there is an ancient street filled with representative ancient buildings from the Ming and
Qing Dynasties, attracting great numbers of domestic and foreign visitors.
North Street is the best preserved ancient street in this suburb. Only one kilometer long, the whole
street is at once primitively simple, yet very elegant. Strolling on this ancient thoroughfare and
appreciating the historic buildings, long‐established stores, and old bridges as well as the many narrow
lanes is another enjoyment.

Humble Administrator's Garden
The Humble Administrator's Garden was originally built in 1509 during Ming Dynasty (1368‐1644). In
late Qing Dynasty (1644‐1911), the garden has developed to present three characteristic parts, the
Eastern Garden, Western Garden and Central Garden.
It was initially a private garden of a former government servant named Wang Xianchen. It was said he
intended to build a garden after retired and just do some gardening work like planting trees and
vegetables there, which was said to be the life of a humble man by him. Hence is the name of the
garden.
The garden was created upon the old relics of a resident and a temple. Water feature is the main
background and its natural landscape includes small forests, hills and rock formations. It also has
man‐made pavilions, halls and parlors. Unlike the Grand View Garden and other famous gardens in
Beijing, it is representative of the Ming Dynasty building style.
27
Garden of the Master of the Nets
This exquisite garden was first designed during the Song Dynasty (960 ‐ 1279) as part of a residence
that was used until the Taiping Rebellion in the 1860's. It is recognized with other classical Suzhou
gardens as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Master of the Nets garden, then called Ten Thousand Volume Hall, was first constructed in 1140 by Shi
Zhengzhi the Deputy Civil Service Minister of the Southern Song Dynasty government. Shi Zhengzhi
was inspired by the simple and solitary life of a Chinese fisherman depicted in philosophical writings.
As you walk about the gardens and along the walkways, there are often views through windows onto
beautiful flowers drawing you to a single sight. As you walk through the buildings, it is easy to imagine
the life that the original residents lived in a feudal society where these gardens were solely for their
pleasure and the pleasure of their guests. The various buildings are constructed so that you can always
access the main garden from any room. The rooms themselves are quite impressive in design and
ornamentation and well represent the style of the Song Dynasty.
28
Lion Forest Garden
Built in 1342 during the Yuan Dynasty (1279‐1368) by Monk Tianru and a group of Zen Buddhist
disciples as a memorial of their master‐Monk Zhongfeng. It is said that Emperor Qianlong (18th
century) visited the site six times and inscribed the word "Zhenqu" (true delight) to describe the
garden's beauty.
The name comes from rocks in the garden that apparently resemble lions and have connections to a
Buddhist story as well as special significance to the Abbott. Emperors Kangxi and Qianlong both
visited the garden and were impressed enough to leave inscriptions and even try to recreate it
elsewhere.
The Lion Forest Garden differentiates itself from its brethren by being dominated by rocks. It’s quite a
small garden, but the maze of walkways above and underneath the rock will be sure to have you
walking in circles for some time. Dating from 1342 (Yuan Dynasty) the garden was constructed by
disciples of the Zen Buddhist Abott Tianru Weize.
29
Tiger Hill
Tiger Hill, known also as Surging Sea Hill, is a large hillock covering some14100 square metres (over
three acres) and is 36 metres (118 feet) in height. Climbing it, you will find a number of historical sites
some of which can be traced back over 2500 years to the founding of Suzhou. Although the hill is
relatively small it has rich history.
According to legend this is the burial site of King He Lu of the Wu Kingdom, who is regarded as the
founder of Suzhou. Soon after his son buried him here a white tiger appeared to stand guard over his
tomb, which is how the hill received its name.
There can be little doubt that Tiger Hill is a wonderful sight with its leaning pagoda, waterfalls and
landscaped paths. It is hard to believe that it was man made to be the burial place of king but this is yet
another part of the wonder that is China, a land that will never cease to amaze and enthral the visitor
with its heritage.
30
Cold Mountain Temple
Cold Mountain Temple is situated five kilometers (about three miles) from Fengqiao Old Town in
Suzhou. It is said that in the Tang Dynasty, a famous monk Han Shan came to take charge of the
temple, hence its name. Building originally commenced during the Liang Dynasty (502‐557), and was
repaired again in the following dynasties.
Being one of the most famous temples in Chinese history, Hanshan Temple often boasts about its bell
rings. However, the best known bell described in Zhang Ji's poem disappeared a long time ago. Every
year on New Year's Eve in China's lunar calendar, the bell is tolled to pray for the happiness and safety
of the coming New Year. This festival attracts thousands of tourists both at home and abroad.
Around the Cold Mountain Temple, you can also enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Maple Bridge and
get a realistic feel of the ordinary life of the people living in the Fengqiao Old Town. You can also have a
look at the famous Jinghang Canal, which is the longest ancient man‐made canal in the world.
31
Grand Canal
It was firstly built in 486 B.C. and open to navigation through entire line in 1293 A.D.  The canal
connects the present cities Beijing in the north and Hangzhou in the south, which served as dynastic
capitals in the past, and contains 24 locks and 60 bridges.
The ancient city of Suzhou was the paradise for all merchants owing to the Beijing‐Hangzhou Grand
Canal; even to this day, about half of the volume of goods is transported by waterway through the
Grand Canal. To boat on the ancient Grand Canal is absolutely one of the best ways to appreciate the
beauty of typical ancient river towns in south region of Yangtze River.
Along the way, there are 10 ancient city gates of Suzhou, more than 20 stone bridges in diverse styles of
traditional designs, ancient river town dwellings and historical relics; and the gorgeous lighting adds
more glamour to the night boating of the Grand Canal. In addition, during the journey, visitors can
also learn the historical stories, local customs, and enjoy good food of local flavors when appreciating
the surrounding landscapes.

Tianzifang
Tianzi Fang is a touristic arts and crafts enclave that has developed from a renovated traditional residential area in
the French Concession area of Shanghai, China. It is now home to boutique shops, bars and restaurants.
The district comprises a neighborhood of labyrinthine alleyways off Taikang road, a short street which is today
mostly known only for Tianzi Fang. Tianzi Fang is known for small craft stores, coffee shops, trendy art studios and
narrow alleys. It has become a popular tourist destination in Shanghai, and an example of preservation of local
Shikumen architecture, with some similarities to Xintiandi.
Tianzi Fang is largely hidden from the neighboring streets, as it grew from the inside of the block outward, although
there are now shops on Taikang Road itself. Historically Lane #248 was a key entrance that, in order to gain access to
the commercially developed area, required walking about 50m through whilst be surrounded by local residents' life,
including bicycles, hanging laundry, etc. until finally emerging in the 'new' area.

People’s Square
People's Square is a large public square in the Huangpu District of Shanghai, China. It is south of Nanjing
Road (West) and north of Huaihai Road (East). People's Square is the site of Shanghai's municipal government
headquarters building and is used as the standard reference point for measurement of distance in the Shanghai
municipality.
Prior to 1949 and the establishment of the People's Republic of China, what is now People's Square was a course
for horse racing owned by the Shanghai Race Club. After gambling and horse racing were banned by the
new Communist government, a part of the race course became People's Square, which included a large avenue and
spectator stands for use during parades.
The Shanghai Metro's People's Square Subway Station is an interchange among the subway's Line 1, Line 2, and Line
8. Several bus stops also ring the north and south sides of the square.

Shantang Street is located in the northwest of Suzhou, linked with Changmen in the east where
aristocracies pursued pleasures, Huqiu in the west, “the No.1 place of interest in the Wuzhong District”.
It was built by digging the river and constructing dams in 825 A.D. when Bai Juyi, one of the most
famous poets in Tang Dynasty, took the post of Suzhou Cishi (feudal prefectural governor). Owing to
its distinguished geographic location and convenient water and land transportation, Shantang Street
was one of the streets which trade and culture were most highly developed in Ming and Qing dynasties,
regarded as “the No.1 Ancient Street in China”. The renovated Shantang Street becomes the place which
shows the essence of natural views and human landscapes of Suzhou, which is rated as “the miniature
of old Suzhou and the window of Wu culture”. The Shantang Street parallels with the waterway. Along
the street stand a good many stores and halls which have delicate and graceful styles and scatter
properly. All of above present the street’s prosperity again. There is a folk song, singing “There is a
paradise in heaven, but there are Suzhou and Hangzhou on the earth. Hangzhou has the West Lake
while Suzhou has Shantang. Both are good places with boundless sceneries”, which is the vivid image of
Shantang.

Ancient Town Tongli (Suzhou)
According to an ancient Chinese proverb: "In heaven, there is paradise and on Earth there is Suzhou
and Hangzhou". However, for most people of Tongli this proverb is incomplete because between
Suzhou and Hangzhou lies Tongli.
Located in Wujiang County, Tongli, originally known as Fushi, is a village in the suburbs of Suzhou,
Jiangsu Province, with a history of more than 1,000 years.
The town of Tongli is famous for its canal system (15 in total) which is largely reminiscent of the Italian
city of Venice. Tongli indeed appears like a maze of canals with its old perfectly preserved stone bridges
(there are 49) as well as its very narrow alleys where the small local craftsmen try to perpetuate the
activities of the past.
