pleasing and satisfying, and this garden was specially built for Pan's parents as a place for them to enjoy
a tranquil and happy time in their old age.

combination of tourist attractions, shops, entertainment and cultural exhibits. It owes its special social
attractions and rich commercial background to the fact that the earliest bank, gold shop, jeweler's
store, wine shop and tea house of the city were all to be found here.

handicraft articles, paintings, calligraphies and jewelry are well‐appointed and give you plenty of

monk from Mount Putuo, went on a pilgrimage to Tibet via Mount Wutai and Mount Emei. He visited
Burma after leaving Tibet. Whilst there, Chen Jun‐Pu, an overseas Chinese resident in Burma, donated
five jade Buddha statues to Huigen, who transported two of them back to Jiang‐wan, Shanghai. Here,
Huigen had a temple built with donated funds, and died shortly thereafter.
Both the Sitting Buddha and the Recumbent Buddha are carved with whole white jade. The sparkling
and crystal‐clear white jade gives the Buddhas the beauty of sanctity and make them more vivid.
Just opposite the temple gate, there stands a giant screen wall. various designs, such as dragon, phoenix,
elephant, crane and peony are carved on it. in chinese legend, all these things are considered the

the first shopping street of the city.
Over time, Nanjing Road has been restructured and is undergoing significant changes. For shopping,
its eastern end has an all‐weather pedestrian arcade. Traditional department stores no longer dominate

Xintiandi, Shanghai
As a re‐creation born out of the sprawls of Shikumen housing, which is the architectural symbol of
Shanghai in the 20th century. Located at Taicang Road, Huangpu District, Shanghai. Xintiandi has an
active nightlife on weekdays as well as weekends, though romantic settings are more common than
loud music and dance places.
Xintiandi is where "yesterday meets tomorrow in Shanghai today” because of its concept of
construction. It retains the antique walls, tiles and exterior of the Shikumen housing of old Shanghai.
On the other hand, its interior embodies a totally different world of international gallery, bars and
cafes, boutiques or theme restaurants. When you walk into it, you will get the taste of both Shanghai in
the 1920's and the sonic modern lifestyle of urbanites of the 21st century.
Xin Tian Di has become the best place for visitors to appreciate the history and modern life of
Shanghai, and is also a meeting place for local citizens and foreign visitors. Two kilometers away, there
is a place of the same kind, called Tianzifang, which is also a welcoming art street.

Shanghai Maglev Train
Shanghai ‐ a booming metropolis in east China ‐ is the first stop of many people when they travel to
China. Want to feel the pulse of the city immediately? It is recommended to take the maglev train if
you are just arriving at Pudong International Airport of the city.
Build with the technological help from Germany, Shanghai Maglev Train (SMT) has been operated
since the end of 2002. It is the world's first and only commercialized maglev train line in operation. It
runs from Pudong International Airport to Longyang Rd. Station located at the intersection of
Longyang Road and Baiyang Road in Pudong New Area. The train reaches speeds of 430 km/hr (267
miles/hr), and the trip takes less than eight minutes.
You will be impressed by the amazingly fast speed of the train and have an exciting first experience in
the city. You'll be feeling a bit whiplashed, but that sense of disorientation hints at the fast‐paced city
that lies ahead. As of now, the Maglev doesn't extend to the rest of the Shanghai.

Wuzhen
Wuzhen lies at the north of Tongxiang City. It is about 50 miles (80 kilometers) from both Hangzhou
and Suzhou, and 87 miles (140 kilometers) from Shanghai. This small town, with its black tiled and
timber framework houses, contrasts sharply with its white walls and gray flagging, bringing to mind a
Chinese ink and wash painting. Whether wandering along the riverside or strolling in the lanes paved
with blue flagstones, you will be deeply impressed by the picturesque scenery and slow lifestyle.
The morning of Wuzhen starts with women washing clothes by the clear river and black wooden
windows propped up. The river running through the town was once the main means of transportation
for local people. If you want to enjoy a peaceful Wuzhen, get up before 7 o'clock in the morning and
have a walk along the street. There are several teahouses by the river, all clean, comfortable and
pleasant. Have glue rice balls as breakfast. Or sip green tea by a teahouse window, while admiring the
pastoral scenery of this ancient riverside town.

Qibao Ancient Water Town
The formation of Qibao Ancient Town can be traced back to the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms
period, to the Northern Song Dynasty. Qibao Ancient Town can satisfy your curiosity about ancient
water townships without the bother of either long distance or the rush of crowds.
Qibao is the Chinese for 'seven treasures' and there are two popular theories about its derivation. The
more reliable one says that the name originates from the Qibao Temple, famed for its good reputation.
It was this that contributed to the growth of business and culture of the previously unknown town. The
other theory seems more popular among the local people who tell folk tales about seven treasures.
These were an iron Buddha made in Ming Dynasty, a bronze bell also dating from the Ming Dynasty
but said to have mysteriously appeared from nowhere, a Gold Script Lotus Sutra written by an imperial
concubine of the 10th century, a one‐thousand‐year‐old Chinese catalpa tree, a jade axe, a gold cockerel
and a pair of jade chopsticks. Actually of these seven treasures, the existence of only first four can be
verified while only the Scripture and the bell have survived to this day.

Zhujiajiao Ancient Water Town
Located in a suburb of Shanghai city, Zhujiajiao is an ancient water town well‐known throughout the
country, with a history of more than 1700 years. It about 50 miles (90‐minutes’ drive) from Shanghai.
Unique old bridges across bubbling streams, small rivers shaded by willow trees, and houses with
courtyards attached all transport people who have been living amidst the bustle and hustle of the
modern big city to a brand‐new world full of antiquity, leisure and tranquillity.
In the town, there is an ancient street filled with representative ancient buildings from the Ming and
Qing Dynasties, attracting great numbers of domestic and foreign visitors.
North Street is the best preserved ancient street in this suburb. Only one kilometer long, the whole
street is at once primitively simple, yet very elegant. Strolling on this ancient thoroughfare and
appreciating the historic buildings, long‐established stores, and old bridges as well as the many narrow
lanes is another enjoyment.

Garden of the Master of the Nets
This exquisite garden was first designed during the Song Dynasty (960 ‐ 1279) as part of a residence
that was used until the Taiping Rebellion in the 1860's. It is recognized with other classical Suzhou
gardens as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Master of the Nets garden, then called Ten Thousand Volume Hall, was first constructed in 1140 by Shi
Zhengzhi the Deputy Civil Service Minister of the Southern Song Dynasty government. Shi Zhengzhi
was inspired by the simple and solitary life of a Chinese fisherman depicted in philosophical writings.
As you walk about the gardens and along the walkways, there are often views through windows onto
beautiful flowers drawing you to a single sight. As you walk through the buildings, it is easy to imagine
the life that the original residents lived in a feudal society where these gardens were solely for their
pleasure and the pleasure of their guests. The various buildings are constructed so that you can always
access the main garden from any room. The rooms themselves are quite impressive in design and
ornamentation and well represent the style of the Song Dynasty.

Grand Canal
It was firstly built in 486 B.C. and open to navigation through entire line in 1293 A.D. The canal
connects the present cities Beijing in the north and Hangzhou in the south, which served as dynastic
capitals in the past, and contains 24 locks and 60 bridges.

Canal; even to this day, about half of the volume of goods is transported by waterway through the
Grand Canal. To boat on the ancient Grand Canal is absolutely one of the best ways to appreciate the
beauty of typical ancient river towns in south region of Yangtze River.
Along the way, there are 10 ancient city gates of Suzhou, more than 20 stone bridges in diverse styles of
traditional designs, ancient river town dwellings and historical relics; and the gorgeous lighting adds
more glamour to the night boating of the Grand Canal. In addition, during the journey, visitors can

mostly known only for Tianzi Fang. Tianzi Fang is known for small craft stores, coffee shops, trendy art studios and
narrow alleys. It has become a popular tourist destination in Shanghai, and an example of preservation of local
Shikumen architecture, with some similarities to Xintiandi.
Tianzi Fang is largely hidden from the neighboring streets, as it grew from the inside of the block outward, although
there are now shops on Taikang Road itself. Historically Lane #248 was a key entrance that, in order to gain access to
the commercially developed area, required walking about 50m through whilst be surrounded by local residents' life,
including bicycles, hanging laundry, etc. until finally emerging in the 'new' area.

headquarters building and is used as the standard reference point for measurement of distance in the Shanghai
municipality.
Prior to 1949 and the establishment of the People's Republic of China, what is now People's Square was a course
for horse racing owned by the Shanghai Race Club. After gambling and horse racing were banned by the
new Communist government, a part of the race course became People's Square, which included a large avenue and
spectator stands for use during parades.
The Shanghai Metro's People's Square Subway Station is an interchange among the subway's Line 1, Line 2, and Line
8. Several bus stops also ring the north and south sides of the square.

Shantang Street is located in the northwest of Suzhou, linked with Changmen in the east where
aristocracies pursued pleasures, Huqiu in the west, “the No.1 place of interest in the Wuzhong District”.
It was built by digging the river and constructing dams in 825 A.D. when Bai Juyi, one of the most
famous poets in Tang Dynasty, took the post of Suzhou Cishi (feudal prefectural governor). Owing to
its distinguished geographic location and convenient water and land transportation, Shantang Street
was one of the streets which trade and culture were most highly developed in Ming and Qing dynasties,
regarded as “the No.1 Ancient Street in China”. The renovated Shantang Street becomes the place which
shows the essence of natural views and human landscapes of Suzhou, which is rated as “the miniature
of old Suzhou and the window of Wu culture”. The Shantang Street parallels with the waterway. Along
the street stand a good many stores and halls which have delicate and graceful styles and scatter
properly. All of above present the street’s prosperity again. There is a folk song, singing “There is a
paradise in heaven, but there are Suzhou and Hangzhou on the earth. Hangzhou has the West Lake
while Suzhou has Shantang. Both are good places with boundless sceneries”, which is the vivid image of
Shantang.
