Personal tutors should regularly connect with students throughout the academic year. The document provides suggestions for monthly check-ins, including: sending welcome emails in September; meeting students in October; wishing them a good winter break in December; welcoming them back in January; sending encouragement and study tips in March and May as exams approach; and celebrating their success at the end of the year in June. The goal is to provide support and ensure students don't feel alone, especially during stressful periods.

Opportunities
Don’t leave students in the
dark! Here are some golden
opportunities to reconnect
with your students
September- Say hi!
Send incoming students an email! Let them know who
you are, what you are here to do, and how you can help.
October- Meet your students
Meet your students! Don’t wait for events, set up meetings.
With groups or individuals. Meet the people you are tutoring in
person. Let them see you!
November
Assignments for students are
rolling in! Just give them an
opportunity to escape.
December- Wish them a good break
Wish your mentees a good Christmas break, and let them know of
anything they need over Christmas and what to look forward to in the
coming term.
January- Welcome them back!
Welcome your students back with an email and see them all in their
brand new designer student outfits and talk to them about the term
ahead. Many students drop out over Christmas, so it’s important to
remind them that there is a member of staff there for them!
February
March- Break!
Wish them a good break,
and to start revision early.
April
May- Exam time!
It’s a stressful time of year to be a student. Regardless of the
department, just wish your students luck with their exams! Let them know
that someone is in the background wishing them through. If you can fit in
a meeting with them beforehand to go over some essential revision
skills, then all the better!
June- It’s all over now
It’s the end of the year as we know it! Thank
them for the year, have a celebration of
success, and make them aware of personal
tutor details for next year.
