ROLF C.HAGEN INC. - the industry
leader 60 years on !
I have just returned home from
attending the HAGEN CORPORATION’s
60th Diamond Jubilee Trade Show in
Quebec – Canada. A glittering affair
with stunning product displays.
When Rolf C Hagen immigrated
from Germany to Canada in 1954
and started his business selling bird
seed from his native home, he could
never have imagined what lay ahead
for him in the growing pet industry
in Nth America. From this lowly base the company flourished over
the following years, eventually dominating the pet product supply
business in Canada and expanding into the U.S.A. market.
Growing success was helped initially with his friendship and business
relationship with Tetra founder, Dr. Ulrich Baensch. Under the Hagen
company banner, Tetra Fish Foods soon grew to totally dominate
the Nth. American fish food market in the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s.
When Dr. Baensch sold the Tetra company in the early 80’s, Rolf C
Hagen moved to develop the Nutrafin brand of fish foods based on
his extensive knowledge of the market he had developed over many
years. This has grown into the Nutrafin Max of today – one of the
world’s leading brands.
In the following years the Hagen Corporation expanded its company
into many of the world’s leading Western markets including Germany,
England and France. National distributors were appointed in many
other countries, including Pet Pacific in 1980 in Australia. Famous
names of today were introduced over the years including Fluval,
Aquaclear, Laguna, Exo Terra, Living World, Catit, Dogit and Marina
brands, among many others.
The success’s that followed allowed the Hagen Corporation to
finance many philanthropical and animal research programs at the
Guelph University in Canada – and the creation of HARI (The Hagen
Avicultural Research Institute), the creator of the famous Tropican
Bird Foods range.
While Rolf C Hagen passed away 4 years ago – the company continues
to grow and flourish under the control and guidance of his three sons,
Rolf Hagen Jnr., Tom Hagen and Mark Hagen.
Famous for their support of the independent pet trade, Pet Pacific
is proud to carry on the Hagen traditions in our market and we are
grateful for the many years of support and loyalty to Pet Pacific in our
local Australian market.

opportunity to grow. The US 2013/14 APPA national pet owners survey
showed Independent pet stores gained ground against competing channels.
Petsmart and Petco have been part of the Pet retail landscape in the US for
20yrs now and the price disparity between independents and these “Big Box”
retailers is slowly becoming insignificant.
It is the ongoing trend towards the “humanisation” of our pets that has aided
in the success of well operated independents. Pet owners are now looking for
a local personal service that delivers on both ‘knowledge and products’. The
brand/product has to deliver on ease of use and their pets well being, all
backed by friendly knowledgeable staff.
It is Important that the service and knowledge you provide along with the look
of your store all forms part of your own brand! Walk in to your store and think
of this as your first visit and consider what your thoughts are? What is your
brand and does your store meet the modern pet consumers needs?

GREEN
Pet Pacific made a commitment to Green
energy earlier this year and installed solar
panels at their facility in Emu Plains.
The panels will provide all the electrical needs
for the company and will ultimately provide
free electricity so there are two benefits
from this new technology. Excess electricity is
returned to the grid as these panels provide
more power than the company requires at this
time.
All electrical goods will be run off this source
of power including machinery such as fork lifts
and powerful lights in the warehouse.
Another green initiative that Pet Pacific
undertook some time ago was to convert all
of the high wattage
metal halide lighting
in the warehouse to
much more energy
efficient LEDs.
There is no better time to start thinking

Larger marine aquariums of approximately
50 gallons and up often have overflows and
assorted plumbing, which leads back and
forth from a bottom mounted sump.
Given the popularity of reef systems these
days and the great success many reefers
are enjoying in propagating coral, the
environment for a sump pump is only getting
more demanding. Supplementing calcium
and alkalinity levels with sump-mounted
reactors keep these levels high to fuel hard
coral growth. This is tough on submerged
pumps of any kind, and when you consider
power and higher head height performance
from a good sump pump, you are placing
load on it. The presence of minerals that will
precipitate around the impeller chamber,
due to the heat, represents further torture
for this hardworking hardware.
Some marine aquarists have also opted to
maintain a refugium in their sump. This
adds to the possibility of bits of macro algae
or substrate material entering the pump,
making this undoubtedly tough on impellers.
So what does this mean when selecting a
marine sump pump?
You should look for some clear indication
on the packaging that the pump has been
recommended for use in marine aquariums
and reefs because many pumps are not.
Fluval SEA SP-Series sump pumps have been
certified for use in saltwater environments.
Sump pumps ensure water is exposed to
your skimmer and other equipment. It’s very
important to use a quality sump pump for a
function that is so critical to the life of your
fish and coral.
PROTECTING YOUR PUMP
So how do you help protect your sump
pump from this harsh environment? Here
are a few important points to help you do
that:
1. Make sure you remove your sump pump
for a thorough cleaning 3-4 times a year,
about every 3 months if you use a calcium
and/or alkalinity reactor. Simply submerge
the pump in a 4:1 vinegar to fresh water
solution and run it for an hour. Then, open
the volute (front of impeller housing) and
thoroughly clean the impeller, impeller
well and the entire inside of this housing.
Re-assemble the pump and rinse under
fresh running water. It is now ready to be
re-installed.
2. Include a 90-degree elbow on the intake
of the pump, positioned to face the bottom
of the sump. This will prevent air from
entering the pump and will prolong its life
span.
3. Make sure you employ an effective bubble
trap in your sump to prevent air and any
debris from entering the pump.
4. When hard plumbing (or exterior to sump
installation) your sump pump, make sure
you utilize true union ball valves before and
after the pump to facilitate installation and
removal.
CHOOSING THE RIGHT PUMP
Making the right choice depends on your
needs. Evaluate the size of your aquarium
and what you will be keeping. Do you want
the sump pump to contribute to significant
water movement within the aquarium?
What is the head height the pump will have
to contend with?
A performance graph is included on the
Fluval SEA SP-Series sump pump packaging
as well as online. If you can answer the
questions and consideration above, this
graph will help you select the right pump for
your installation.
Finally, remember that bigger is not always
better when it comes to a pump. Higher
wattage means more heat imparted to the
water, so if you are not going to use the
power, there is no need to purchase the
larger-sized pump. That said, if you do plan
on adding equipment that could impact
pump performance, then be sure to add an
allowance for additional pump power when
making your decision.

CORY CATS: Peaceful & Cute

The genus CORYDORAS
contains over a hundred
and fifty species and is by
far the most common of
the dwarf armoured catfish
that originate from South
America.
Many of the species within
this genus are easy to breed,
and given their cute whiskers
and curious active nature,
are fittingly a very popular
aquarium fish. Most shops
will inventory at least a
couple of species.
Some species are
commercially farmed in
North America and Asia.
This is a good thing as many
of their natural habitats in
South America are under
commercial pressure as a
result of raw resource needs
and projects funded by
foreign nations, something
that all of us without
exception can help reduce.
Corys are a peaceful catfish
with some interesting colors
and patterns. Surely, at least
one species should find itself
within a peaceful community
aquarium.
Should you decide Corydoras
catfish are a tropical fish
you’d like to keep, take note
of these helpful tips:
Keep these fish in groups, a
minimum of 3 to 5 fish.
In nature they like to travel
and mingle in large schools,
therefore mimic at minimum
a small group (preferably of
the same species) in your
aquarium. If your aquarium is
over 35 gallons then consider
getting 10 of them, you’ll be
rewarded with their natural
behaviour and possibly some
spawning activity.
Corys are bottom dwellers.
Their downturned snouts
that are adorned with small
whiskers are key in helping
them locate food at the
bottom of the aquarium.
Make sure you nourish these
guys accordingly; tubifex
worms; small pellet or tablet
food; a variety of frozen
foods such as glassworms
and bloodworms are all
eagerly relished. Make sure
they get to eat, if it means
feeding them after the
lights go out then so be it,
aggressive fast moving tank
mates will deprive them of
food, so pay attention to the
right mix of fish and ensure
they have a chance to feed.
Keep Corys on sand or
a maximum 2 to 3 mm
diameter smooth gravel.
Their little whiskers which
are very important to them
do not fare well on sharp
edged substrates. Should the
diameter of the substrate
particles be too large, food
will become lodged where
they may not be able to
reach it.
When setting up their tank
allow for an open center area
where food will be easily
accessible and allow them to
band together at times while
moving about.
This will allow you to observe
corys the way you would in
nature. In general, the tank
set up should be uncluttered
and not a heavily planted.
Preferred temperature range
is 23.9°C to 26.7°C.
They do not like
temperatures above this
range, in the middle of this
is best.
Corys are adaptable when it
