SYSTEM DESIGN STATE-OF-THE-ART IN CHINA Contributors: Liu Xin PhD. Tsinghua University / Academy of arts & Design / Industrial design dept. / China System Design for Sustainability (SDS) Politecnico di Milano May 18th 2009

Sustainable Development is a very hot (even be abused ) word in China now. Lot of people are familiar with the word and use it in different means and different ways. ,[object Object],Most people know a little about word of DFS (design for sustainability), but think it same with green design. Those who know about SDS are relatively less, even in the scope of designers. Focusing on the material product design is still in dominant in China.
In Tsinghua we have “System Design Studio” from 1998 , the vision seems coincides with concept of DFS . ,[object Object],We think system design should not aim at “object”, but “event”, not “product” but “solution”, by means of processing relations of internal and external elements! It should be creating a new lifestyle for people, searching for a all-win situation for people, society, environment and enterprises, the final purpose is contributing to sustainable development of society.
“…… the design of such systems of products and services which would be jointly capable of satisfying specific needs and desires of the customer, and the related innovative stakeholders’ interactions, leading towards eco-efficiency, social equity and cohesion. (Carlo) ,[object Object]
[object Object],The concept of “ 天人合一” “ harmony between human and nature” was firstly described by Zhuang Zi living more than 2000 years before (about 369 B.C. - 286 B.C.), subsequently developed by other philosophers to a set of philosophy system, and thus constructed the main body of traditional Chinese culture. SUSTAINABLE CONCEPTS IN ANCIENT CHINA:
[object Object],Sustainable concept in ancient China is a systematic idea taking the ecological environment as the central, and the harmonious development of mankind and nature as the vision , based on this thinking could really contribute to humanity’s well-being and long-term development.
[object Object],China has experienced reform and opening-up for nearly 30 years, and accessed the achievement attracting all world’s attention. Economy developed rapidly, living level of people raised... Per capita GDP of China in 80s of last century is 200$ , and that value in 2008 reached 3000$. China not only feeds 1.3 billion population with limited resources, but also creates a miracle of economic development.
[object Object],While economy developing rapidly, China also faces huge issues: 1, Over-exploitation of resources and increasingly serious environmental problems have been the huge burdens influencing future China development.
[object Object],全球 70 %以上的电子垃圾倒在中国!
[object Object],2, With Intensified the process of urbanization, large numbers of rural population flooding into big cities has challenged city management seriously : excessive density of population, serious traffic jam, widening rich-poor gap, pollution as well as low quality air and so on. 高峰时段,汽车时速约为 5km/h , not fast than carriage
[object Object],3, aging problems aggravate, and China would lose its labor advantages gradually. 4, laws and regulations which are not suitable to economic development needed to complete and improve. …… …… ……
[object Object],Under this background, SDS concepts and practice means much to the transition towards a sustainable society in china.
[object Object],SDS needs full understanding and cooperation of governments, enterprises, design and the public to achieve all-win situations. SYSTEM DESIGN FOR SUSTAINABILITY 企业 BUSINESS 制度 INSTITUTION 大众 PUBLIC/ CONSUMER 设计 DESIGN

At present, most Chinese enterprises are at “production” stage, lack of design and develop capacities, and manufacturing industry chain has not been well formed, enterprises relied on external market and mature product line model too much. Business ,[object Object]
http://images.google.cn/imglanding?imgurl=http:// ,[object Object],Financial crisis brings disastrous impacts on many manufacturing enterprises. (The largest toy manufacturer closed down) 2008 秋天合俊集团旗下两家工厂倒闭,为中国制造业的发展模式敲响了警钟 a wake-up call for China's manufacturing industry 。
At the same time, service-driven enterprises mainly providing network services rapidly developed: express, online shopping, telecommunications, Information services, catering, entertainment, and so on. Some Eco-Business in China enhance more than ever. Like BYD(Electric car), solar power industry, methane utilization technologies, straw energy technologies, and so on. ,[object Object]
Chinese consumer get more rich than before. One side, abnormal consumption in Chinese rich class is not rare. In the trend of globalization, commercial groups drive mass media to advocate certain America standards of “ happiness, success and noble ”,and t he rich and the stars have always been to play as consumption model to the public. the public often follow passively the step of “fashion and success” to the endless “consumption black hole”. Public/Consumer ,[object Object]
On the other hand, green and environment protection awareness of the public significantly increased In recent years. Fashion is no longer single, but multiple! The influence of Chinese traditional culture revived, natural, green, and thrifty lift styles are more and more accepted by the public. ,[object Object]
For enterprises, design is service industry, only plays as role of profit tool. For most of Chinese designer, design is only to provide dazzling forms of products, with less consideration on t he substance of the product, and not to concern about environmental protection and efficient use of resources. On the other hand, international sustainable design concepts are being continuously spread, and international sessions and cooperation projects on DFS in field of architecture, energy, transportation and culture spread become more and more. Design ,[object Object]
[object Object],[object Object]
[object Object],[object Object]
[object Object],[object Object],All this effort makes more and more design students and designers to understand that DFS not only mention physical products, but also is system innovation, institution innovation, and the changing of production and consumption modes.
As an independent social role, design has its own values and social obligations. Chinese designers must change the trend taking stimulating consumption as the only vision, turning from “form supplier” to coordinator for interests of all parties, and continuously searching for a creative solution to achieve development of enterprises’ profits, consumers’ desires, environment’ benefits, sustainable usage of resources and social harmony. ,[object Object]
[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
[object Object],Though most Chinese do not know about SDS , and the economy development and shaking off poverty and setting out on a road to prosperity are still the main purpose, but indications show that with propagating the concept of design for sustainability, accumulating practical activities and enhancing people’s environmental awareness and concepts of harmonious society , it is possible that China gets on the path of sustainable development.
