Fishbowl
How it works
• Arrange four chairs facing the audience
• Choose speakers to sit in three of the chairs, one remains empty
• The speakers have a conversation with each other, the audience observes &
does not interact with the speakers
• An audience member joins the conversation by sitting in the empty chair
• A speaker returns to the audience to maintain one empty chair
Variations
1) Form a topic list. The fishbowl speakers address the topic for a specified
time period. At the end of the time period, the audience votes to change topic
(and speakers) or continues for another specified time period.
2) A topic expert occupies one seat.Three empty chairs are occupied by a
revolving group of conversation participants.
3) After a panel discussion, set out enough chairs for the panelists plus two
extra chairs for participants. Participants occupy one of two empty chairs.
Panelsts stay seated.

self-organizing Panel Conversation
A fishbowl conversation is made up of “speakers”who sit in chairs and
an “audience”who listens.Speakers have a conversation with each
other, while observed by the audience. When an audience member
sits in the empty chair,he/she is promoted to speaker and one speaker
returns to the audience. As a point of ettiquite,no-one should be
forced out of a speaker seat until he/she has had a chance to talk.
