- Coverage : Do not expect to cover the whole state-of-the-art by searching in national patents only. Limitations : The user is limited in the advanced search screen to four terms per search field and to 21 terms in total. Commercial patent databases : Commercial patent databases usually offer extra value (number of fields you can access, content of the abstract rewritten to facilitate access to the document by means of keyword.searches). Be aware : Be aware of the content of the database you are using and know the field limitations.
