DSS (Ducati Skyhook Suspension) SYSTEM
The DSS (Ducati Skyhook Suspension) electronic suspension system is
characterised by semi-active suspension control and ensures a steady set-up
regardless of road conditions (Skyhook means “hook hanging from the sky”).
Customer advantages:  Better comfort
 Lower load transfer
A suspension is considered semi-active when it can vary its compression and
rebound damping upon particular circumstances (e.g.: humps, braking and
accelerations).
It differs from an active suspension since in an active suspension system the spring
function is carried out by pneumatic systems or by electromagnets.
Electric system
Page 37
NEW
DSS (Ducati Skyhook Suspension) SYSTEM
The DSS has been developed on different types of ground:
 Hump (single event)
 Consecutive depressions (low frequency)
 Paved road (high frequency)
 Potholes (single events)
 Winding paved road (high and low frequency)
 Belgian paved road (high frequency/width)
Model Year 2013Electric system
Page 38
NEW
Model Year 2013
DSS (Ducati Skyhook Suspension) SYSTEM
 Consecutive depressions (low frequency stress)
The soft setting of a traditional suspension would result in lower comfort, while the
semi-active suspension enhances performance by means of a harder damping.
 Paved road or potholes (High Frequency Stress)
The soft setting of a traditional suspension is the best one, therefore the semi-active
suspension uses a less hard damping.
 Hump (single event)
In this case suspension setting is less hard (depending on solenoid valve activation
speed).

DSS (Ducati Skyhook Suspension) SYSTEM
The system is provided with four accelerometers, two of them set on the sprung mass
(frame) and the other two set on the unsprung ones (front and rear wheel).
The data provided by the four accelerometers are processed by the BBS control unit
(the DSS suspension module is set inside it): it adjusts suspension damping
continually.
The DSS operation is based on the two pairs of accelerometers: the front one
measures the fork compression/rebound speed and the front end vertical oscillation
speed; the rear pair, instead, measures the rear suspension compression/rebound
speed and the rear end vertical oscillation speed.

STRATEGY FOR REDUCTION OF MOTORCYCLE PITCH ANGLES
 BRAKING
While braking the DSS algorithm controls the
compression/rebound damping valve by closing the oil
passage: this causes the fork to harden and reduces the
front sinking.

compression reboundCONSTANT SPEED STRATEGY
The DSS algorithm purpose is to keep the motorcycle set-up constant, while running,
regardless of ground stress.
Therefore, suspensions become harder or softer and automatically adjust
compression and rebound hydraulic damping, for front and rear end independently.

and that is different for each Riding Mode;
the system carries out a semi-active
adjustment according to the stress from
the ground.

DSS (Ducati Skyhook Suspension) SYSTEM
When the instrument panel is OFF the system is not working and suspensions are
totally stiff (HARD feature). This is due to the fact that damping control valves are
normally closed.
Upon instrument panel switch-on, suspensions are powered during the first 30
seconds, after that time, if engine is not started, valve power is cut off with the above-
described consequences.
This function reduces the system current absorption.

BOSCH 9ME ABS SYSTEM
 Bosch 9ME (as for 1199 Panigale)
 Combined braking system: the braking power
distribution on the rear end reduces the braking
distance and keeps the motorcycle stable
 Antilift-up system: reduces the motorcycle roll-over
risk to a minimum
 4 possible settings:
1) ABS_1
2) ABS_2
3) ABS_3
4) ABS_OFF

BOSCH 9ME ABS SYSTEM
Using the 9ME ABS device it is possible to set and/or disable by the instrument panel
the control inside each single Riding Mode:
 ABS_1: ABS intervention is set for front end only, rear wheel locking is possible in
this operating mode. The anti-lift-up function is not available. The combined
braking function is disabled;
 ABS_2: ABS intervention is active on both wheels (less sensitive for sports use).
Combined braking: active in SOFT mode (lower distribution on the rear wheel);
 ABS_3: ABS intervention is active on both wheels (more sensitive than Level 2,
for use on wet ground), combined braking is active in HARD mode (higher
distribution on the rear wheel with respect to Level 2);
 ABS_OFF: antilock control is disabled.
NEW
Ducati Safety Pack: ABS + DTC
Compared to the previous Model Year, it is now possible to disable
both the ABS and the DTC inside each Riding Mode.
when the safety systems (DTC and ABS) are disabled either
individually or contemporaneously, the following warning messages
will be displayed one at a time on the round instrument panel: ABS
OFF or DTC OFF.
When DTC Levels 1 and 2 are selected, the warning message
DTC – OFF ROAD, will be automatically displayed to remind the
rider of the safety system low intervention level.

NEW FUEL LEVEL SENSOR
This sensor has been redesigned to improve the fuel
level reading.
1) Accurate and stable reading of fuel level signal
 use of REED contacts
2) Rigid body to avoid float locking
 ALUMINIUM structure
Page 54
NEW
The operating principle is resistive and uses
REED sensors.
REED sensor: it is a normally opened switch that
closes when a magnetic field is present.
Page 55
Model Year 2013Electric system
Advantages of using Reed contacts:
 They are protected in a watertight environment featuring inert atmosphere
 highly reliable (up to 100 million switchings)
 High attraction power when reeds are closed
 this reduces the bounces
 Low contact resistance (0.1-0.2 ohm) and low open contact electrostatic capacity
 they do not affect measurements.
NEW
Page 56
Model Year 2013Electric system
REED Contacts Float
 The sensor features 10 REED contacts. These contacts close at the float
position (magnetic core), enabling a suitable sensor resistance.
 The float structure allows the closure of 2 contacts at a time depending on the
position of magnet (float), and the generation of 20 resistive thresholds and
consequently of 20 positions (levels) of the float itself.
NEW
Page 57
Model Year 2013Electric system
The fuel level indication management algorithm has been modified to ensure
the following advantages:
 Fuel level indication management in tank upper side (5 litres from completely full –
3 notches). Due to the tank structure the level indication is integrated with the fuel
consumption value provided by the engine control unit.
 Addition of a “Quick filter” of fuel level value if the motorcycle is in key-on, with
engine OFF or ON, running at a speed < 10 Km/h. In this way fuel level can be
quickly refreshed (T=10 seconds) even in the event of full tank, with the key on
and the motorcycle on the side stand.

THE HANDS-FREE SYSTEM
The Multistrada 1200 Model Year 2013 is equipped, like the previous Model Year,
with an active and a passive key for starting (a further key can be stored).
Both the operating logics and the Pincode function use have not been changed.

Page 59
HANDS-FREE: NEW STEERING LOCK OPERATION
The steering lock can be enabled during the first 60 seconds after instrument panel
switch-off. Unlike the previous Model Year, the system does not detect the steering
fully home position any more.
WARNING: If the steering is not in the correct position, the steering lock is not
enabled; in this case it is still possible to visually check the attempt of removal of the
steering lock latch on the part of the Hands Free unit.
The mechanical safety device available in the system prevents the latch from coming
out and this forcing produces a noise.
“WAITING FOR LOCK” indication is
no longer displayed

DDS 2.0 – Copying and writing the VIN code inside the control unit
The Multistrada 1200 MY2013, as the 1199 Panigale, features the VIN code (Vehicle
Identification Number - Frame Number) stored in three control units:
1) Instrument Panel (Dashboard)
2) BBS (Black Box)
3) Engine Electronics (Engine Control Unit)
With the DDS 2.0 diagnosis tester two functions can be carried out:
 Copying of the VIN code, to be used in case one or two of the above-mentioned
original equipment control units are replaced (spare control units are not
provided with VIN information)
 Writing of the VIN code, to be used only in case of replacement of all the three
above-mentioned control units contemporaneously, after having requested an
enabling password through Youtech

DDS 2.0 – Copying and writing the odometer value inside the control unit
The Multistrada 1200 MY2013 is the first Ducati model that, in case of instrument
panel replacement, allows you to transfer the ODOMETER value (mileage value)
from the original instrument panel to the spare one.
 In order to ensure this, the ODOMETER value is stored both in the Instrument
Panel and in the BBS control unit.
 The transfer of the BBS value to the Instrument Panel and vice versa is carried
out by means of the DDS 2.0 using the suitable function “ODOMETER Writing”
available in the Instrument Panel diagnosis section.

DDS 2.0 – COMPRESSION/REBOUND DAMPING ACTIVATION
With this function it is possible to change the monoshock and the fork left-hand leg electric
damping setting from fully open to fully closed.
This function is provided by the DDS 2.0 device; in the BBS system it changes the front fork and
the rear monoshock compression/rebound damping setting:
 Compression/rebound damping adjustment - fully open (FORKS/MONOSHOCK completely
soft).
 Compression/rebound damping adjustment - fully closed (FORKS/MONOSHOCK completely
hard).
In this case the compression and rebound damping minimum and maximum setting are set both
for the fork and the monoshock.
WARNING: With this function it is not possible to test the DSS system, it is only possible to
check if the hydraulic damping adjustment is properly working or not.

Two spark plugs per cylinder
The dual spark ignition system generates two
flame fronts that ensure complete combustion in a
very short time
The four plugs are identical (NGK MAR 10A-J
type, different from the one fitted on MTS1200
MY12).
They must be replaced every 24,000 km/15,000 mi

SECONDARY AIR SYSTEM
The secondary air system supplies fresh air to the exhaust duct, outside the
combustion chamber. In this way the combustion can be carried on even outside the
chamber and the unburnt gases can be fully burnt, thus protecting catalytic
converters against early wear. Moreover, the stoichiometric ratio achieved inside the
combustion chamber is very close to the ideal one.
Increasing the injected fuel quantity  better combustion  better vehicle rideability

  • 38. Model Year 2013 DSS (Ducati Skyhook Suspension) SYSTEM The DSS (Ducati Skyhook Suspension) electronic suspension system is characterised by semi-active suspension control and ensures a steady set-up regardless of road conditions (Skyhook means “hook hanging from the sky”). Customer advantages:  Better comfort  Lower load transfer A suspension is considered semi-active when it can vary its compression and rebound damping upon particular circumstances (e.g.: humps, braking and accelerations). It differs from an active suspension since in an active suspension system the spring function is carried out by pneumatic systems or by electromagnets. Electric system Page 37 NEW
  • 39. DSS (Ducati Skyhook Suspension) SYSTEM The DSS has been developed on different types of ground:  Hump (single event)  Consecutive depressions (low frequency)  Paved road (high frequency)  Potholes (single events)  Winding paved road (high and low frequency)  Belgian paved road (high frequency/width) Model Year 2013Electric system Page 38 NEW
  • 40. Model Year 2013 DSS (Ducati Skyhook Suspension) SYSTEM  Consecutive depressions (low frequency stress) The soft setting of a traditional suspension would result in lower comfort, while the semi-active suspension enhances performance by means of a harder damping.  Paved road or potholes (High Frequency Stress) The soft setting of a traditional suspension is the best one, therefore the semi-active suspension uses a less hard damping.  Hump (single event) In this case suspension setting is less hard (depending on solenoid valve activation speed). Electric system Page 39 NEW

  • 42. Model Year 2013 DSS (Ducati Skyhook Suspension) SYSTEM The system is provided with four accelerometers, two of them set on the sprung mass (frame) and the other two set on the unsprung ones (front and rear wheel). The data provided by the four accelerometers are processed by the BBS control unit (the DSS suspension module is set inside it): it adjusts suspension damping continually. The DSS operation is based on the two pairs of accelerometers: the front one measures the fork compression/rebound speed and the front end vertical oscillation speed; the rear pair, instead, measures the rear suspension compression/rebound speed and the rear end vertical oscillation speed. Electric system Page 41 NEW
  • 43. STRATEGY FOR REDUCTION OF MOTORCYCLE PITCH ANGLES  BRAKING While braking the DSS algorithm controls the compression/rebound damping valve by closing the oil passage: this causes the fork to harden and reduces the front sinking. compression Model Year 2013Electric system Page 42 NEW

Braking Algorithm: Results EXAMPLE OF STRATEGY APPLICATION WHILE BRAKING damping MAX MIN frontbrake pressure(bar)forktravel(mm) --- MIN damping --- With braking strategy --- MAX damping Model Year 2013Electric system Page 43 While braking, damping is increased and then restored to optimum value. The fork travel value is set between maximum and minimum damping values, thus avoiding excessive load transfers to front end. --- MIN damping --- With DSS --- MAX damping NEW
  • 45. Braking Algorithm: Results EXAMPLE OF STRATEGY APPLICATION WHILE BRAKING damping MAX MIN frontbrake pressure(bar)forktravel(mm) --- MIN damping --- With braking strategy --- MAX damping Model Year 2013Electric system Page 44 The suspension operation is so effective that there is no need for ABS intervention: the wheel shows optimum grip also during braking NEW
  • 46. compression While accelerating the DSS algorithm controls the compression/rebound damping valve closing the oil openings: this causes the monoshock to harden and reduces the rear dive. STRATEGY FOR REDUCTION OF MOTORCYCLE PITCH ANGLES  ACCELERATION Model Year 2013Electric system Page 45 NEW
  • 47. constant variable compression reboundCONSTANT SPEED STRATEGY The DSS algorithm purpose is to keep the motorcycle set-up constant, while running, regardless of ground stress. Therefore, suspensions become harder or softer and automatically adjust compression and rebound hydraulic damping, for front and rear end independently. Model Year 2013Electric system Page 46 NEW
  • 48. The Ducati Electronic Suspension system (DES MY12) sets the compression/rebound damping in a PASSIVE way, depending on the setting configured for the Riding Mode selected among the 4 available. • 49. The new Ducati Skyhook Suspension System (DSS MY13) is based on a compression/ rebound damping adjustment that can be defined as the “starting point” and that is different for each Riding Mode; the system carries out a semi-active adjustment according to the stress from the ground. SUSPENSION SETTING: DES (MY12) vs DSS SEMI–ACTIVE (MY13) SPORT TOURING ENDURO URBAN 1 Manual electro-actuated selection 1…32 Suspension adjustment range zero zero zero zero Automatic electronic selectionDSS SOFT HARD Model Year 2013Electric system DES 2 2 3 Page 48 NEW
  • 50. SUSPENSION SETTING: DES (MY12) vs DSS SEMI–ACTIVE (MY13) The selection of the “starting point” can be customised by the rider for each Riding Mode, within a special range set by the selected Riding Mode. Model Year 2013Electric system Page 49 NEW
  • 51. Page 50 DSS (Ducati Skyhook Suspension) SYSTEM When the instrument panel is OFF the system is not working and suspensions are totally stiff (HARD feature). This is due to the fact that damping control valves are normally closed. Upon instrument panel switch-on, suspensions are powered during the first 30 seconds, after that time, if engine is not started, valve power is cut off with the above- described consequences. This function reduces the system current absorption.  Please inform the Customer about this new feature! Model Year 2013Electric system NEW
  • 52. BOSCH 9ME ABS SYSTEM  Bosch 9ME (as for 1199 Panigale)  Combined braking system: the braking power distribution on the rear end reduces the braking distance and keeps the motorcycle stable  Antilift-up system: reduces the motorcycle roll-over risk to a minimum  4 possible settings: 1) ABS_1 2) ABS_2 3) ABS_3 4) ABS_OFF Model Year 2013Electric system Page 51 NEW
  • 53. Page 52 Electric system Model Year 2013 BOSCH 9ME ABS SYSTEM Using the 9ME ABS device it is possible to set and/or disable by the instrument panel the control inside each single Riding Mode:  ABS_1: ABS intervention is set for front end only, rear wheel locking is possible in this operating mode. The anti-lift-up function is not available. The combined braking function is disabled;  ABS_2: ABS intervention is active on both wheels (less sensitive for sports use). Combined braking: active in SOFT mode (lower distribution on the rear wheel);  ABS_3: ABS intervention is active on both wheels (more sensitive than Level 2, for use on wet ground), combined braking is active in HARD mode (higher distribution on the rear wheel with respect to Level 2);  ABS_OFF: antilock control is disabled. NEW
  • 54. Ducati Safety Pack: ABS + DTC Compared to the previous Model Year, it is now possible to disable both the ABS and the DTC inside each Riding Mode. when the safety systems (DTC and ABS) are disabled either individually or contemporaneously, the following warning messages will be displayed one at a time on the round instrument panel: ABS OFF or DTC OFF. When DTC Levels 1 and 2 are selected, the warning message DTC – OFF ROAD, will be automatically displayed to remind the rider of the safety system low intervention level. Page 53 Electric system Model Year 2013NEW
  • 55. Model Year 2013Electric system NEW FUEL LEVEL SENSOR This sensor has been redesigned to improve the fuel level reading. 1) Accurate and stable reading of fuel level signal  use of REED contacts 2) Rigid body to avoid float locking  ALUMINIUM structure Page 54 NEW
  • 56. The operating principle is resistive and uses REED sensors. REED sensor: it is a normally opened switch that closes when a magnetic field is present. Page 55 Model Year 2013Electric system Advantages of using Reed contacts:  They are protected in a watertight environment featuring inert atmosphere  highly reliable (up to 100 million switchings)  High attraction power when reeds are closed  this reduces the bounces  Low contact resistance (0.1-0.2 ohm) and low open contact electrostatic capacity  they do not affect measurements. NEW
  • 57. Page 56 Model Year 2013Electric system REED Contacts Float  The sensor features 10 REED contacts. These contacts close at the float position (magnetic core), enabling a suitable sensor resistance.  The float structure allows the closure of 2 contacts at a time depending on the position of magnet (float), and the generation of 20 resistive thresholds and consequently of 20 positions (levels) of the float itself. NEW
  • 58. Page 57 Model Year 2013Electric system The fuel level indication management algorithm has been modified to ensure the following advantages:  Fuel level indication management in tank upper side (5 litres from completely full – 3 notches). Due to the tank structure the level indication is integrated with the fuel consumption value provided by the engine control unit.  Addition of a “Quick filter” of fuel level value if the motorcycle is in key-on, with engine OFF or ON, running at a speed < 10 Km/h. In this way fuel level can be quickly refreshed (T=10 seconds) even in the event of full tank, with the key on and the motorcycle on the side stand. NEW
