2. INTRODUCTION
The first antidandruff shampoo containing Zinc Pyrithione was launched
almost four decades ago. Since then Zinc Pyrithione bactericide-fungicide has
become the worlds leading antidandruff agent. It also used as an antibacterial
agent in Dermatological creams and ointments.
It effectively does the job any antidandruff agent is expected to do i.e.
relieving the flaking and itching symptoms of dandruff. Its lasting
properties make Zinc Pyrithione a superior one, meaning it sticks and
remains active on the scalp, so it’s effectiveness lasts from one use to the
next.
Combination of efficacy and safety has made it most effective antidandruff
agent for several decades.

Zinc-2-Pyridinethiol-1-Oxide
Zinc Pyrithione is actually Zinc complex of Pyrithione which
is 2-Pyridine thiol-1-oxide. Under chemical abstracts registry
it is named as bis[1-hydroxy-2(1H)-Pyridinethionato-O,S]-(T-

5. Stability Study
Heat Stability :
It is stable at 100°c for at least 120hrs. Around 240°c it undergoes decomposition.
pH : Stability :
Zinc Pyrithione is quite stable over the pH range from 4 – 10. Below 4.5 the
Zinc complex starts dissociating, forming free Pyrithione. Above pH 9.5 the
Zinc complex undergoes hydrolysis to give ionized Pyrithione
Light Stability :
Zinc Pyrithione undergoes gradual decomposition when exposed to light

7. In – House Clinical Study
Clinical trial to study the efficacy and safety of Anti-dandruff shampoo containing
1.0% of Zinc Pyrithione was conducted on 20 male volunteers with moderate to
severe dandruff for 04 weeks

Non of them complained of any adverse effects like pruritus, erythema, hair fall or local
discomfort
there was definite reduction in dandruff (White powder / flakes in the scalp) in all the volunteers
