Photo shoot details
My photo shoot will consist of four of my models, Greg Latham will
portray Lead singer Niall Seacrest, Tom Mcrae will be portraying
drummer Noah Sven, Josh Gibson will be modelling the role of
keyboard player Rou Charles and Kyle Parkinson will be portraying
Rudy Small, bass player, toghether the four models comprise the
Ghana-based four piece alternative metal ban “Dropout” who have
recently reunited after the lead singer Niall Seacrest was admitted to
rehab for pain killer addiction.
I have chosen my four models because they are all in real life
advocates of the alternative metal genre, and they have a familiarity
with the expected conventions of the genre. They were all informed
that they should be wearing clothes that would fit the genre, except
for Tom, I wanted Tom to wear a plain white shirt and black tie to
show that he was something of a wildcard, someone who does not
play by conventional genres rules and wears formal clothes to non-
formal occasions, the whole principle of alternative metal is too defy
conventions and I wanted one of my models to exemplify this.
Regarding the location of the photo shoots, I chose to have the
photo shoot for the front cover and double page spread in the same
location, predominately for convenience but also because the
location had a plain white board in the background which allowed
me to easily edit the image so that I could apply my own colour for
the background. I chose an entirely different location for the double
page spread, I chose an abandoned lecture theatre as the
background shot for my double page spread, however after taking a
photo of my models in front of the lecture theatre, I found that there
positions were not very consistent or professional, so I used a
separate shot of the lecture theatre on its own, converted to grey

scale to make it more atmospheric and so as not too draw attention
away from the band members, I then overlaid the picture of my
models over the image of the lecture theatre.
As far as lighting is concerned, I chose a purposefully low lit lecture
theatre because the casting of shadows made the image seem more
atmospheric, however besides the natural shadow effects of the
image I have not added anything to them, the same is true for the
other pictures that were used for my front cover and contents page.
The use of an abandoned lecture theatre in grey in the background
of my double page spread I felt effectively set the mise en scene for
my double page spread, the picture of empty seats behind my image
connotes both loss and rebirth, the empty seats would be
detrimental to a band, but the way the band members are posing,
standing united, suggests that the seats will soon be filled by roaring
crowds. I specifically asked for my models to stand shoulder to
shoulder in my contents and front cover images, this showed that
they have unified and united, truly a coalition. I also asked for the
two models at the end of the row, Josh Gibson and Tom Mcraee to
be smiling, whilst the two models in-between them, Greg Latham
and Kyle Parkinson would both have serious expressions, this shows
that whilst they are serious they are also positive, and looking
forward to the future.
