Leading in a Time of Crisis

Herunterladen, um offline zu lesen

Now is a time for leaders to remind yourselves of what your people need you to do, and to pause and think about what type of leader you need to ‘be’ for others. We won’t have all the answers, and silence isn’t an effective response. We need to meet people where they are and understand their concerns, and we want them to stay adaptable and focused as our ways of working and the work itself changes.

“Leading in a Time of Crisis,” part 1 of Korn Ferry’s Leading Through and Beyond COVID-19 series. Presenters: Dennis Baltzley, Madeline Dessing and Steve Newhall.

  4. 4. As a leader, BE… © 2020 Korn Ferry. All rights reserved 4 1. CALM 2. CONFIDENT AND POSITIVE 3. COURAGEOUS 4. EMPATHETIC ▪ Personal control – or stress shuts down the neo-cortex (reasoning and problem solving). ▪ Emotional self control – because that stuff (stress, negativity) leaks out. ▪ You are highly skilled; no one understands your business and context better. ▪ Your guesses and instincts are best judgement. ▪ Be willing to launch without guarantee of success (hard for some). ▪ Endure – as a leader you have to hold steady, persevere. and persist. ▪ Show people you care and understand their stressful situation. ▪ Know where your people are in the grief curve. 5. RESILIENT ▪ Be an energy bringer. ▪ Practice creative abandonment (What is draining your time, attention, and resources away from what you must do?).

KEEP IT SIMPLE and purposeful ▪ Remind people what’s really important – common goals, clearly understood. ▪ Practice ruthless prioritization (remember: the main thing is to make the main thing, the main thing).

  8. 8. …as a personal ‘speed bump’ to slow yourself down and check in with others. …to pick exemplary leaders in your company who embody these attributes – to tell their story. …to give feedback to leaders who are paralyzed or bulldozing people without sufficient care. How to put BE and DO tips into practice… 8 …as a coaching checklist for an early in career leader. …as an agenda item in a team meeting to set the tone. …to brainstorm which of these creates the most stability or continuity. © 2020 Korn Ferry.
