Climate action is necessary for sustainable agriculture.
Steps include
1. Investment in public research
2. Improved access to electricity, quality health centres and other essential services
3. Expanding conservation programs
etc.

Sustainability

2. Soil together with water is considered as earth’s most
important natural resources. They contribute immensely to
the survival of all living organisms. Soil along with water are
essential to the growth of crops and rearing of animal i.e
agriculture.
The importance of agriculture includes
i. Source of food and fodder
ii. Source of livelihood
iii. Source of raw material
iv. Important contribution to economic development and
international trade
v. Creation of employment opportunities

Threatened livestock

Low nutritional value
However, agriculture has been faced with potential challenges due to climate
change. These could lead to;
And subsequently affect food
security
4
Low crop yield

4. To overcome such uncertainties, sustainable agricultural practices
should be encouraged and adhered to. Such practices include;
Crop adaptation strategies e.g crop
diversification, use of drought
tolerant seeds/seedlings, organic
fertilizer use and tree planting, etc.
Livestock adaptation strategies
e.g diversification of pasture
management and improving
genetics of local breeds, etc.
Other adaptation
strategies include labour
migration, etc.
5. Note: FAO emphasized that without urgent action on
climate change, “millions of people will be at risk of
hunger and poverty, especially in Africa and Southeast
Asia ”.
Cut GHG
emissions
Enhance soil
carbon
sequestration
Improve soil health
These sustainable farming practices will :-
6. Investment in public research
Expanding conservation
programs
Provision of intermediate
and appropriate
technology suitable for
sustainable agricultural
services
Improved access to
electricity, quality
health centres and
other essential
services
Government should help in mitigating the effect of climate change on
agriculture by promulgating policies and measures that will encourage
climate action. Example of such policies and measures are:-
Provision of a national
climate action plan
7. As we celebrate the Earth’s day, let us
ensure we adhere to all safety rules that
will reduce and eliminate the coronavirus
(Covid-19). Wash and sanitize your hands
frequently and stay indoor during this
lockdown. If its necessary to go out, use a
mask. Stay safe
Happy Earth’s Day 2020
