Editor's Notes

  1. It’s all about your attitude toward work and what value you bring to the company. You must always believe that the company is fair and NOT out to take advantage of you – Share the “Paul Story”
  2. Trust is something that is so lacking in today’s job market. It’s like there is some type of power play going on here. Under these conditions, it most definitely is a no win situation. GET OVER IT! Be a servant leader Always be prepared to work hard to prove yourself
  3. There was a time when you really wouldn’t even consider a job change for less than 10% pay increase. Times were different then. In today’s market it is far more common to “take a step back to take 2 steps forward.” 2 Examples: -$11/hr. starting pay - $17/hr. in less than a year! -$40,000 starting pay - $60,000 in 2 yrs! Get creative in your approach to being noticed. It starts with you being confident in yourself and most important, your confidence in making a difference for your employer Ask yourself this question: Would you hire you??
  4. Live you life out of a model of fairness. Who you are and what you bring will return back to you. You create the world you want to live in! YES it is really up to you to create what you want. The alternative is someone else telling you what to do. While that is a common approach that people follow by default (I.e. simply because they let others take charge). When it’s 5:00, don’t just drop everything and head for the door. You may not be a t good stopping point: -Just a few more minutes and we’ll complete the customer order that 2nd shift can now ship out -If we finish this drawing yet today, we can send the prints over to manufacturing so that they can get started on making parts the first thing tomorrow and meet our customer delivery schedule. Whistle Bit: Working at John Deere back in Iowa early in my career, the shop guys would be all ready to leave EXACTLY at 5:00 and at 4:59 they would be headed for the door. Get in their way, you’d be knocked over!! I remember one time when my technician and I were working on a prototpe hydraulic system and really into some really interesting work and he was working when the buzzer rang….That’s getting “Whistle Bit!”
  5. This is a huge opportunity for those who are prepared in the 4 dimensions I discussed. With job experience now not an issue (i.e. you’re the group being picked from), take advantage of being more than the typical job seeker.
  6. Now the next level of employee that companies are looking for. What I just went through is essentially the new baseline. From here, the level of employ involvement and influence takes it to the “Entrepreneurial Employee” model. Anyone owned a business or been part of running one? It is so much different than just being an employee. Anyone run their own business? How as it different for you? This is serious, companies are having to be more and more competitive and it really starts with their employees and their initiative to really be part of making a company successful.
  7. Here I’m saying that there is nothing wrong with being a “regular employee” and all the important characteristics that we discussed previously. Long term, this is not sufficient. Employees who take an “active interest” in what is best for the company is what is needed. When decisions are made for the best of the company, what happens: -The company grows -They make more money -They share the money with the employees NEVER the other way around!!
  8. The shift I want you to see here is that just being a good employee is not enough. To see how doing things smarter, more efficiently and what everybody does really makes sense is what is the goal. When we all work smarter we get the most done and people are more satisfied in what they do to contribute to the success.
  9. The ideal job of course is one that taps into what you are passionate about. You really need to know what it is that you are passionate about and seek companies out that are doing things similar to what you love to do. There will be tough times but doing what you love to do will be the energy to get you through!
  10. Key attribute is being flexible or adaptable to changing needs. In business today, things change faster than ever. It may even feel like we are changing things too quickly. What Is see often times is that businesses are being forced to change to prosper and in some cases even survive. It really is that competitive out there You must of course never compromise your core beliefs and values as that is the foundation for everything.
  11. The old saying that if you are not growing, you are dying is true in the case of employees as well. As a business owner, think about how much more you would value employees that were open to change, willing to learn something new and adapt to new business needs. These are changing and exciting times Remember YOU are the one in charge
  12. Always be aware of your own personal performance and things you need to work on to make yourself a more valuable employee. Don’t get left behind as things change. As business changes, what you used to do very well, may not be something that is even needed anymore by the business: -Medical transcriptionists (voice recognition technology displaced transcriptionists) -Automated assembly now being done with robotics (even food ordering)
