2. OUR FIRM COMMITMENT
‘The customer is King’ is rapidly becoming ‘The customer experience is King’
in the retail world as retailers acknowledge they need to work harder to win hearts
and minds of customers and that lighting plays an essential role in transforming
retail spaces.
Retailers increasingly acknowledge the powerful effect lighting can play in getting
the brand message across and it is arguably a major factor in visualising the brand.
This use of lighting to help forge brand identity is even more relevant in the changing
face of online and physical shopping where the physical backdrop must truly
showcase a brand.
At RIDI Lighting we recognise the opportunities that good retail lighting can offer
and, from the diversity of projects we have encountered, we know what matters to
you, our clients.
RIDI works passionately as a trustworthy lighting partner to retailers worldwide,
working in close collaboration to realise the design ambitions of clients –some who
need guidance on a more optimised solution than they had originally envisaged.
With the procurement of an LED fitting plant, we are now in the position to produce
our own inhouse adapted LED modules to address the growing demands on LED
lighting technology and design.

3. A CLOSE COLLABORATION
3
Service is now seen as a prime requirement in the fast moving world of
LED technology, sustainability and controllability.
RIDI Lighting are answering the demands of this challenge with their
affordable german engineered lighting solutions, underpinned with a
5 star level of service.
We know that our retail clients have very clear objectives about how
their stores should visually reflect their brand identity and our lighting
has to match these objectives. As leaders and early adopters in the field
of LED technology-we see this technology taking up space in retail at a
rapid rate. The stakes for offering a full service, not just product supply
and some design support are even higher; and future proofing the retail
installation is more important than ever- not just supplying products,
but accommodating onsite support and advice.
RIDI Lighting have answered these support requests with a 5 star
service commitment to retailers:
• A committed, trustworthy and practical lighting partner- RIDI offer
a quality German engineered product with consistently high levels
of support,
‘You develop a rapport with somebody you trust,
an individual relationship’
• Product focus and reliability- ensuring the right solution is
provided, together with design support, for the required brand
identity. Also ensuring reliable ongoing support in the form of spare
parts supply for 10 years. We understand concerns in the industry
on reliability of products and components where warrantees are
based on extrapolation.
‘Ten year guarantee for spare parts….I think I heard that
recently from RIDI….very useful’
• Clear and accurate information delivered on time to retail clients
and their design teams. This is critical in the fast moving world
where store developments and refurbishments happen at a
continually rapid rate.
• Ongoing education and design support- including speedy
responses for commercial questions which help support
the business case for lighting- quotations, paybacks,
concept proposals.
• Reliable onsite support for issues relating to delivery, installation,
commissioning and all areas of after sales.
4. ACTIVE CUSTOMISATION
4
There is always a need
for close collaboration
with our clients, who
sometimes have a
clear picture of what
they expect from
lighting to assist their
customer journey
instore; at other times
they will need more
input from the RIDI
design team.
Our retail collaborators are ready to talk ideas and creativity to help elevate the
physical retail environment onto a brand carrying platform.
This McArthur Glen shopping mall in Swindon realises the client’s vision
of transforming a previously bland downlit space into a more architectural
and visually appealing Mall. The LED high performance rings from the
RIDI Spectral range greatly reduced the visual clutter on the underside
of the canopies and added greater depth to the mall space.
The designer Paul Tatum, Director of Future Projects commented
‘When we found Spectral STORA LK we knew we had found exactly what
we were looking for – a stylish low energy luminaire, built on a large scale.
Spectral provided fantastic service, and we were delighted with the
end result.’
5. A VISUAL BRAND NARRATIVE
5
Good lighting in fashion retail involves the use of high levels of uniform
light at high intensity on the shelves with minimal shadowing.
Accent lighting should be used where contrast is required and also to
produce sparkle and shimmer, adding to the depth of detail.
Lighting should be integrated where possible into ceiling troughers and
shelving to miniaturise the lighting points and highlight the branded
products on display.
Fixtures with flexibility of beam angle allow continuity of design but with
layers of application.
These lighting tasks have been skilfully employed at the Giorgio Armani
display at Harrods. Ridi were asked to provide a flexible, discreet LED
system to be housed in the existing ceiling coffers. A bespoke lighting
solution was manufactured to fit into an existing metal box section for
the ceiling. This ensures as seamless an integration with the existing
ceiling architecture as possible. The resulting new lighting system
received positive acclaim from the client.
6. ENERGY AND EMOTION
6
For all supermarket retailers, the customer experience is still paramount but the
size and volume of retail spaces to light also presents the client with energy
saving opportunities like no other.
Smart lighting control can be a large part of this energy efficiency strategy
and at Ridi we understand the importance of addressing the aesthetic needs
required for a vibrant customer experience, whilst working hand in hand with
the client to produce a scheme which ticks all of the energy boxes and reduces
the carbon footprint.
Good lighting in supermarkets includes uniform and bright shelf lighting, with
accent lighting to pick out certain shelves and merchandise.
Different merchandise requires its own unique treatment-food needs correct
colour temperature and colour rendering (above 90).
To differentiate different products like white goods and cosmetics cooler colour
temperatures above 5000k are often used and inbuilt high intensity shelf
lighting to accentuate products on display.
Light highlighting signage can also be used to assist the customer
journey instore.
Our retail team can help with all of these ‘zones’ and are prepared to invest a
lot of hard work to make sure the initial concept is one to be proud of before
moving forward with the final roll out design.
Enhancing the journey
Ridi have matched whole-life efficiency
savings and simple but effective lighting
with Lidl’s basic value retailer image store.
This uses the latest LINIA trunking system
that offers a fast-fit, easily reconfigurable
continuous lighting system.

services of this Sainsbury’s store. The use of parabolic louvres increases
efficiency whilst also reflecting the more ‘industrial’ design of the interior.
SEAMLESS INTEGRATION
8. THEATRICAL EFFECTS
Reflecting the brand
8
Good lighting in car showrooms helps create trust
in the brand and build its identity in front of the
customer. This is achieved through a blend of both
diffused and directional lighting.
Diffused lighting helps accentuate the scale and
quality of the models and directional lighting
enhances the detail and also introduces a
suggestion of movement.
Excellent colour rendering is required to
also enhance the brand and reflect quality
materials used.
A careful maintenance plan is required to consider
tall ceilings in these environments.
Light scenes should be considered for day and
night scene setting, with emphasis on energy
saving during daylight hours and emphasis on
creating a theatrical backdrop at night time to
showcase the cars for dramatic effect.
9. CENTRE STAGE
Clean lines and sleek shapes
9
The slim line design of the LINIA FLAT ensures a modern minimalistic feel
to this De Kimpe VW showroom in Brussels. The simple design of this fitting
means there is no visual clutter on the ceiling and keeps the customer’s
attention on the cars displayed below. The precise white light from the wide
beam spreads an even light across the vehicles, creating a clean and bright
appearance throughout the showroom.
10. IMPROVED VISUAL QUALITY
10
LEDs are now offering exciting possibilities to make retail displays really stand
out. By choosing the right combination of both phosphors and chips the light
can be tuned more vividly than with traditional light sources. Lamps are now
available with exceptionally high colour rendering indices of up to 93 meeting
the demands of most retailers who generally seek high quality light sources for
accurate colour rendering.
This fast moving technology, combined with Ridi’s proprietary LED
manufacturing capability gives us greater freedom in designing retail solutions.
This facility now produces our own in-house adapted LED modules which
means we can respond both swiftly and flexibly to the high demands of
retail clients.
LEDs more attuned to retail
11. 11
Lighting large out of town retail outlets like DIY, furniture and
hypermarket spaces requires a keen understanding and experience
of sustainable lighting strategies across multiple large sites and
developing a long term strategy together with the client, to be able
to implement this .
All this means being a sound expert on LED technology and lighting
control to offer a smart retail solution. RIDI worked with Decathlon to
deliver a more cost effective solution without any major visible redesign
to their stores. By switching to RIDI from their current supplier they
were able to show a significant energy saving just down to a more
efficient reflector design. In addition to this, the pre-wired LINIA system
employed was significantly quicker to install and led to a 30% reduction
in installation time.
SUSTAINABLE LIGHTING STRATEGIES
Out of town
12. The lighting of escalator spaces instore requires great care as these
are important transition spaces designed to attract customers to other
floors in the building. Careful adherence to lighting levels and colour
temperature is also required to ensure maximum safety for customers
using the escalator stairs. Keen attention to energy and maintenance
issues are essential due to the presence of high ceilings and increased
difficult in replacement of lamps and gear.
Like many major retailers, John Lewis are striving to achieve
increasingly ambitious energy targets, with current figures of less than
8w per m2. The advent of LED technology is allowing these sort of
numbers to become a reality.
RIDI was challenged with lighting the three floor escalator at the John
Lewis store in Exeter, but only from the underside of the escalators.
‘The range of luminaires that RIDI provides allowed us to choose the
specific products that would fit the store’s needs exactly,’ says Mark
Dowling of Dowling Blunt who designed the scheme. ‘The discreet
modern style and high output of the EBD LED and the U-LINE MINI
made them the ideal choice for John Lewis’.’

14. TRUST, EXPERIENCE AND INSIGHT
WHAT WE PROVIDE
14
We are passionate about retail lighting and excited to be working with an
ever increasing list of clients. We realise that retail lighting is changing, and
changing fast. We aim to be ahead of the game in terms of design vision,
technology and support.
We put great emphasis on listening to and understanding the client’s brief,
before working out how to turn this into a visualisation of their brand through
the medium of light.
We want to inspire clients and their design teams about the amazing
possibilities open to them with the intuitive use of light. We can demonstrate
how light helps create the mood and emotion of their brand. Once the brief is
crystallised and we understand how to create visual interest , our retail team
then swing into action with the supporting technical remit and practical light
treatment required.
Instore lighting is becoming increasingly theatrical and experiential and the
Ridi retail team are here to provide the solutions.
Ridi’s 5 star service commitment to retailers means the development of a long
term and trusted relationship with our clients, where we can explore new ways
of thinking together, create innovative solutions and cement a roadmap for
future co-operation.
An important part of our partnership is working closely with the manufacturing
base and product development team in Germany. We organise dedicated retail
visits to the factory not only to demonstrate the state of the art facilities and
LED fitting plant but also to work closely with the manufacturing support team
who get a full understanding of the client’s vision.
Local facilities in the UK like our head office and showroom in Harlow and
new London showroom facility in Clerkenwell are also available for design and
development meetings.
Visual interest through lighting – our philosophy
Insight and partnership
MALL OF BERLIN. RIDI Lighting together with a dedicated specials
team from Spectral provided the complete solution for the recently
opened premium shopping centre in the heart of Berlin. The team
provided 4km of cove lighting using the versatile L-Tube LED
package as the background scheme to the retail site. Throughout the
rest of the project LED downlighters, various fabric pendants and
external colour changing facade luminaires were used to differentiate
the various zones.
15. SETTING THE SCENE
DYNAMIC LIGHTING EFFECTS
15
Dynamic lighting control in retail environments allow the designer to create contrast and drama-essential to heighten attention for
the customer instore and to create the right ambiance to buy.
The other great opportunity afforded by lighting control is creating a more sustainable design and the ability to significantly reduce
the carbon footprint. Many blue chip retailers are now actively harvesting daylight instore to both save energy and to create a
greater sense of well being for the customer.
The latest Tunable White LED luminaire technology makes it possible to obtain colour temperature changes using control systems
and allow greater flexibility in design.
RIDI’s e-Control division has the expertise to handle controls solutions from simple energy saving ones to more complex IP based
systems that can be monitored remotely. Our experience shows that whereby the right product is important, the implementation and
planning are the areas where customers need most help. Where customers have used these services, they have valued the planning
and after-sales support that has come with it. Invariably with lighting being emotive, fine adjustments and tuning will always be
required and seldom works out of a box.
