How about some (big)
lap dog loving?
Meet Sammy!
Sammy is a male 3-year-old Labrador mix
who weighs 65 pounds, but yes, he thinks he
should fit in your lap!
Sammy is super friendly and loves everyone,
including kids! This guy is very treat motivated so
training him should be fun! Speaking of training,
Sammy does need help learning how to walk
on a leash. But he knows “sit” and “shake” and
he keeps a clean kennel, so he may already be
house trained!
Sammy came to us with a leg that was broken in
two places. We think he may have been hit by a
car, but he’s healing up really well. For right now,
he’s going to need to stick to short walks and
limited activity. He needs time to build up those
muscles and we want to be sure he’s completely
healed before he does anything strenuous.
Sammy needs a cat-free home, but he seems to
be okay with dogs. So, if you have an existing dog
a meet and greet is needed to make sure that the
chemistry is right on both sides.
Adopt Sammy
Sammy is 3 years old, neutered, vaccinated,
microchipped and waiting for a family to love. His
adoption fee is only $150. Is a big, fun lap dog like
Sammy right for you? Come in to meet him today!

The Shelters Perspective
Medina County SPCA
Tracey Miller
Director of
Operations
One of our success stories this year is a horse
named Pixie. She came from a terrible neglect
case. When she was rescued, she was severely
undernourished, she had infections in all four
hooves that was so bad in one of her hooves, the
inner part had rotted away. On a scale of A to D
that ranks the appearance of a horse, A being good,
Pixie was a D. The worst it can be. The MCSPCA
immediately started increasing her nutritional intake,
had an x-ray and ultrasound done of her hooves
and legs to examine the extensive damage to her
hooves and to diagnose and treat a ligament injury
she was suffering from in her front leg. Now, after
eight months of challenging work on the part of our
vets and staff at the MCSPCA, I can proudly say
Pixie is thriving and better yet, has been adopted!
A case like Pixie’s is just one example of the level
of need that animals have when they arrive at the
shelters doorstep. Pixie cost the shelter $1200.00 of
our cash resources. Although from time to time the
services needed in severe abuse and neglect cases
are donated, that is a rare commodity and most
of the time we pay for the vet services that these
animals require.
In the end, helping our rescues is the most
important part of what we do at the MCSPCA. We
can’t put a price on giving an animal a chance
to live a full and loved life and can’t offer help to
animals, when we don’t have the funds to pay for
it. So, during this holiday season I urge you to think
about making a donation or becoming a member
of the MCSPCA. Every donation amount gets us
that much closer. Your cash donation is a gift that
means everything to an animal in need.
Happy Holidays!
As this time of year rolls around and we all
gather for our favorite festive occasions, I like
to take stock in the importance of the work that
is done at the Medina County SPCA. As I write
this, 2017 will be remembered at the shelter as
one of the most expensive years we have had
to date. The extra cost was brought on by the
amount of money that we spent helping dogs,
cats and horses with very serious medical
conditions. It seemed just when we thought
we had seen the worst, another animal was
brought to the shelter in grave condition.
At the Medina County SPCA we don’t shy
away from any animal that needs extensive
care. We run as fast as we can to provide help,
no matter what the cost is. The decisions that
are made daily are not prioritized by cost, but
by necessity and that is why I can happily state
that even though our bank accounts are not
where we need them to be, the animals we
have helped will thrive because we acted in
their best interests and not pushed them aside
as many have done to them before.

I am a cat with a good purr who loves to be petted and brushed. A cat who is
maybe not super into toys, but is very good at helping to make the bed and other
household chores! If I can find a person like that, I’ll be just where I belong!
A huge round of “a-paws” to everyone who helped to make MCSPCA’s 5th annual 5k Run/Walk and 1-Mile Fun Run a huge success! Thank you
to our amazing volunteers, the spirited participants, and our generous sponsors and vendors for supporting Paws for the Cause 2017. About 500
runners and walkers and almost 200 dogs joined in the fun on the Medina square. The rescue animals in our shelter and barn are doing the happy
dance thanks to the kindness of so many!

7. From the staff and volunteers of the MCSPCA,
we thank you for your time and effort, Dawn.
You deserve a huge round of a–paws!
The work of volunteers is paramount to
running a successful shelter. There is no way
that the small number of staff that we can
pay to work at the shelter are able to take
care of the number of animals we rescue. If
you are interested in helping as a volunteer,
we urge you to contact the shelter for more
information at 330-723-7722 or you can check
us out on Facebook where all our volunteer
orientations dates are listed. No amount of
time volunteered is too small!

For many of the volunteers at the Medina
County SPCA, the desire to “do something
to help animals”, is a driving force behind the
reason to lend a hand. For Dawn Samples,
she does more than just one thing to fulfill
that need.
“My very first volunteer experience with the
MCSPCA was about eight years ago when
there was a very large dog hoarding case.
There were over one hundred dogs rescued”,
recalls Dawn. During that time Dawn helped for
a few days until most of the dogs were placed.
After that experience Dawn knew that the
MCSPCA would be a wonderful shelter for her
to fulfill her need to help rescue animals.
Dawn has always wanted to help dogs, but
needed to find an outlet where she felt like she
was making a difference and could learn to
work with bigger breeds of dogs that she had
no previous experience with. “Even though we
were full at home with our own dogs and long-
term fosters, I felt like I wasn’t doing enough.
So, I started cleaning cages and walking dogs
at the MCSPCA.” Once Dawn felt comfortable
handling big and small dogs while she did her
work, she added helping the Rescue Team and
Emergency Tech to her list of responsibilities.
She has also recently become the teacher for
the New Volunteer Dog Training class.
Currently, Dawn and her husband Jon have a
fourteen-year-old deaf Shih-Tzu and seven-
year-old English Bulldog that were adopted
from the MCSPCA. Coupled with a five-year-

old Terrier mix that Jon brought home as
a puppy and an eight-year-old nearly blind
Schnauzer Poodle mix that they are fostering.
“We tend to bring in the old and sick dogs”,
commented Dawn. “The goal is to get them
healthy enough to adopt, but if not, they always
have a home here.” In total Dawn and Jon
have fostered or adopted sixteen dogs, of
which six were Hospice Fosters. “I couldn’t
do all this without the help and support of
my wonderful husband. He understands
my passion and helps me care for all of our
rescues and fosters.”
With all the time that Dawn spends at the
shelter, there are some sad situations that she
has seen. “I went with the MCSPCA Veterinary
Tech Carrie on a trip this past winter to pick
up some dogs from another shelter. While
we were there they asked us to come and
evaluate two dogs that had just been brought
in. They were terrified, drooling and cowering
in the back of their cages. Thankfully, Carrie
said we could take them with the other dogs
we had gone to pick up. We named them Ben
and Jerry. I spent the next week visiting the
two of them almost every day and within a
couple of weeks, they had transformed into
happy, loving dogs. They were adopted
shortly after that. That’s what I love about
rescuing animals.”
Thankfully, Dawn made the decision years
ago to fulfill her desire to help animals, by
volunteering at the MCSPCA. All her roles are
so important and help the shelter run smoothly.

Tessie is a princess. She loves people, she’s very
friendly and sweet! But. She is all Princess.
Look, she mostly just wants to strut around being
admired and told she’s beautiful - is that so wrong?
She’ll tolerate a dog (she’ll accept having a
minion), if the dog mostly leaves her alone, but
cats are likely to get bullied by her, because
she’s a princess and that’s just the way it is.
Now - we said that she’s sweet, right?
Because she is! But the problem is that Tessie
“doesn’t show well” at the shelter. Meaning that
she’s bored and frustrated and stuck in a stupid
cage and if you try to engage with her, she’ll
show you her sweet side and then maybe nip
your hand. This makes people think that she’s a
biter - and to be honest, in the shelter, she can be.
But in her foster home, her behavior was much,
much better and she’s not “a biter”, she’s
a “you can stop petting me now”
warning nipper.
Tessie has a comfort zone for how much affection
she likes and if you push her too far (and she will let
you know when you’re approaching the line), she’ll
nip. Unless she’s stuck in a cage at the shelter - then
her behavior is all over the map because she’s had it
up to here with the place and she’s beyond ready to
get the heck out. Princess’s shouldn’t be in cages!
So please, take a chance on Tessie. We just know
that in the right home, she’ll shine! She’d do best
with no other cats, dogs who ignore her, and no small
children who might not get the message that kitty
does not want to be cuddled right now. And if you
know of anyone who wants a... um... “generously-
sized” kitty to treat like a princess, can you please
send them Tessie’s way?
Tessie is six years old, spayed, current on her
vaccinations, and free to adopt! She has been
sitting in the shelter for over six months, waiting for
someone to take a chance on her... Is that
someone you?

14. Shay
I am an incredibly soft, super friendly, sweet, and playful cat. If you know
someone who needs a new companion and furever pet, tell them to head
down to the Medina County SPCA and ask for Shay – I’ll be there all day!
