  1. 1. Centrifugation Made by KASHISH WILSON ASSISTANT PROFESSOR MM COLLEGE OF PHARMACY,MM(DU) MULLANA
  2. 2. Introduction  Centrifugation is a method of separating molecules having different densities by spinning them in solution around an axis (in a centrifuge rotor) at high speed. It is one of the most useful and frequently employed techniques in the molecular biology laboratory.
  3. 3. Objective & Principle  Objective.  To purify the component by removing impurities in the supernatant liquid. 3) To separate crystalline drugs from the mother liquor. 4) To test the emulsion and suspensions for creaming and sedimentation at an accelerated speed.  Principle.  Centrifuge works by using the principle of sedimentation: Under the influence of gravitational force (g-force), substances separate according to their density. Different types of separation are known, including isopycnic, ultrafiltration, density gradient, phase separation, and pelleting.
  4. 4. Application..  The extraction of fat from milk in order to produce skimmed milk.  The removal of water from moist lettuce with the help of a salad spinner.  The Spin-drying of water in washing machines in order to remove water from the clothing.  The separation of solid blood and urine materials into forensic and testing laboratories.  Centrifugation is used to collect cells, to precipitate DNA, to purify virus particles, and to distinguish subtle differences in the conformation of molecules. Most laboratories undertaking active research will have more than one type of centrifuge, each capable of using a variety of rotors.
