If English is not your first language, does your language have words for
mental health, mental illness and mental wellness?
Do these concepts exist in your home culture?
MH Across Languages and Cultures
● In Indian culture, there is a lot of spiritual practices associated with calming the mind and being
whole and content
● Not talked about in latin culture much
● in my Spanish culture, mental health isn't spoken about
● I speak Spanish and at least in my community, discussions around mental health are usually
avoided.
● in Russian, there are words for specific diagnoses, but my experience is that colloquially,
people use degrading terms such as "crazy"
● other than English I speak Spanish and mental health is not a topic that is taken seriously.
● Not much in Vietnamese culture, many parents think its just a phase
● It's stigmatized when people are not mentally healthy... people avoid talking about it
● I remember reading somewhere that in many Asian cultures, there aren't really words for mental
health/depression. And it can come out in different ways such as aches and pains. When I
spoke about to my parents, they would deny that depression exists. They do typically call
people "crazy" or "sick" when they exhibit nontypical behaviors associated with mental health
issues.
● I am American, and hear about other families openly talking about things, but my family has
never talked about mental health or acknowledged any issues. My parents were both only
children from military families.

Some movies and tv shows
that show mental illness…
● joker
● Monk
● Degrassi!
● 13 reasons why?
● one flew over the
coockoo's nest
● A beautiful mind - my
favorite movie
● Homeland
● A Beautiful Mind starring
Russell Crowe
● 13 reasons why
● Girl interrupted
● Split
● silver linings playbook
● Donnie Darko
● shutter island
● all the bright places
● Ramy
● Criminal Minds
● Bedlam - Independent Lens
● Virgin Suicides
● star is born
16. #Movies4MentalHealth#Movies4MentalHealth
Characters with mental
illness are portrayed as…
● unstable
● tormented
● troubled
● stigmatized
● unsuccessful
● helpless
● used as a cheap plot device
● seen as abberent and different
● Stereotyped
● Typically they're shown to the
extreme
● violent
● broken
● paranoid and broken
● their mental illness is often the
only relevant aspect of their
identity
● creepy
● seen as abrupt and creepy
● weird.. different.. not accepted
● movies imply that there are
very few people with mental
illness
● Everything that happens is
rooted in the disorder
● sometimes they're portrayed
inaccurately and they mix up
different behaviors

How does stigma feel?
● Its true we are so stressed out
about the society that we forget to
appreciate our kids needs and
opinions. I think the video is really
an eye opener
● limiting
● isolating
● It feels invalidating
● keep us quiet
● stressful
● It makes me feel scared to come
out and talk about how I need
help.
● stifling
● makes us feel inferiori and alone
● it makes me feel awkward
● feel scared
● feel unheard
● Makes us feel not ourselves
● pretend the problem does not
exist
● It's so frustrating to deal with
something and have so many
people think that you're just lazy
and not trying hard enough
● like talking about it will open
things up that won't successfully
be addressed, so why open that
can of worms
● feels lonely
● Very depressing and should sove
theproblem or talk with others
how we are feeling
21. #Movies4MentalHealth#Movies4MentalHealth
What makes it difficult
to reach out for help?
● fear
● Sometimes lack of resources
● I get scared what people will
think of me
● fear of being made fun of
● embarrassed
● feeling like a burden
● The worry about how other
people will judge us
● Our culture
● Fear of backlash, loss of
respect, fear of being looked at
differently
● the fear that no one will care..
it won't matter
● rejection
● I think being considered "weak" or
"inadequate" when you ask for help is
pretty halting
● it's hard to understand what I'm feeling
● judgement - how people view you
● Not knowing where to turn to. It is hard
to reach out for support when I feel like a
burden.
● money
● in the past, friends have said "I totally
feel the same way, I think I'm bipolar
also"
● fear of being ignored
● lack of understanding
● worried about what people will think

What did you think? What did you feel?
● Add to Netflix list: Indian Horse (Residential School and student who finds refuge in ice
hockey) - beautiful and sad.
● Shame for being part of the race that has inflicted so much pain on other races.
● sad that communities don't support/accept differences. The differences make us
stronger
● It was disheartening to see that this man lost his way of life because of these boarding
schools. It makes you see how some people are wicked enough to take a person's
culture away from them and are willing to leave them traumatizing.
● it is inspiring that he is talking about love after all he's been through
● its really daunting
● sometimes intergenerational trauma can take attention away from the understanding
how the systems of oppression that impacts the present issues
● It was very relatable. Being part of the Hopi tribe it reminded me of my family. Seeing
the intergenerational trauma that has happened to my grandmother, my mom and my
cousins that still live on the rez. I also find it hopeful in seeing that indigenous people
are being represented.
● It's sad to see the woman not realize that her parents were physically abusive but just
thought they were messed up. She just seemed to accept it.
● I think taking a doc format makes it very real and forces viewers to connect with the
actual people who exist in real life instead of a fake character that you'd hope don't
rrepresent reality

● yoga
● I agree, yoga helps to

● having someone I can

What did you think?
What did you feel?
● Sometimes you have to push yourself through the odds and think
about what is best for you.
● Gaining help, regardless of what others think, is what will help a
person become mentally stable and self-confident. You always
have to do what is best for you.
● Love the use of soft focus to help us hear the story
● I think I felt it in my head because it brought back memories of
being in a Latino household and being told some of those stigmas
she mentioned
● I think she has been traumatized by her past events. She could
not make decision and she lost her self esteem.
● I thought the story brought up a important subject of cultural
stigma.
32. #Movies4MentalHealth#Movies4MentalHealth
How can we support
ourselves and others?
● listen to them
● I have seen so many people in my office who looked SO much like this. And
they really can and do get better with support, sometimes relatively quickly.
● school counselors
● not be judgmental
● setting an example, but sharing my challenges - being honest when tough
times happen
● recognize that there is a problem
● to be a good listener and help them/guide them to feel better by thinking thru
known solutions/experiences
● make them feel important and hear them
● know its okay to be selfish at times
● Reaching out is so so important, whether it's to someone we love that's
struggling or especially ourselves. At least in my experience, I feel like
nothing really helped until I was willing to reach out and get help
● Listen to them and tell them that it only gets better. It is always true.
● Sometimes asking ourselves questions. Am I happy? Is this true? ect.
