But what about psychological safety?
All organizations need a system to ensure team members feel
emotionally and psychologically safe. Caring for people’s
mental health is the basis of psychologically safety, which is
the prerequisite for learning, growth, innovation, and
improvement.

C1 - Clear Expectations
Leaders need to set clear expectations
for their employees. This applies to
work expectations and the necessity of
raising individual and organizational
psychological safety and mental health
concerns.

C2 – Connect Regularly
Leaders need to ‘check in’ at least
once a day to see how their team
members are doing. As human
beings, we need connection to feel
our best, do our best, and be our
best.

C3 – Care Genuinely
Leaders need to care genuinely
about the psychological safety of
their team members. Pretending to
care about people when the bottom
line is most important doesn’t
create a psychologically safe
atmosphere.

C4 – Consistent Kindness
Leaders who act kindly create trust.
Leaders who act unkindly create
fear. When leaders are
inconsistent, team members don’t
feel safe because they don’t know
what to expect. Consistent
kindness is key.

C5 – Coregulate
In stressful times, by regulating
their own emotions, leaders help
people move to a place where they
feel safe and secure again. We
coregulate using verbal and non-
verbal feedback received from
those around us.

  • 5. In Lean, 5S focuses on physical safety. But what about psychological safety? All organizations need a system to ensure team members feel emotionally and psychologically safe. Caring for people’s mental health is the basis of psychologically safety, which is the prerequisite for learning, growth, innovation, and improvement.   • 9. C4 – Consistent Kindness Leaders who act kindly create trust. Leaders who act unkindly create fear.   • 10. C5 – Coregulate In stressful times, by regulating their own emotions, leaders help people move to a place where they feel safe and secure again.
