ABAI History <ul><li>The ABAI was established in 1971 </li></ul><ul><li>One of the 24 member boards of the ABMS </li></ul><ul><li>The ABAI is a conjoint board of its two parent boards </li></ul><ul><ul><li>The American Board of Internal Medicine </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>The American Board of Pediatrics </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Beginning in 1989, new ABAI Diplomates received certificates valid for 10 years </li></ul><ul><li>Prior to October, 1989, certificates were time unlimited </li></ul>
  3. 3. Why Maintenance of Certification (MOC)? <ul><li>Regulatory agencies, HMOs and the public require documentation of continual professional development and education by physicians </li></ul><ul><li>MOC is a professional response to the need for public accountability and transparency </li></ul>

What is MOC ? <ul><li>The ABMS MOC program addresses the needs of both physicians and patients </li></ul><ul><li>The program offers physicians a process to keep skills and knowledge current and it responds to consumers </li></ul><ul><li>MOC offers evidence of highly qualified physicians who follow best practices and evidenced-based care </li></ul><ul><li>An assessment of six core competencies as defined by the ABMS </li></ul>
