SOME DATA ON RICE IN GHANA.pptx

  1. 1. SOME DATA ON RICE IN GHANA CSIR-CROPS RESEARCH INSTITUTE, FUMESUA-KUMASI
  2. 2. Rice consumption in Ghana • Rice became a major staple in Ghana about two decades ago with current per capita consumption of 40 kg/person/year • Consumption is increasing faster that any other crop due to the following reasons: • Increasing population & rapid urbanization • Dietary shift from traditional foods due to convenience of storing, cooking and serving rice
  3. 3. Current rice production vs imports in Ghana • Area cultivated approx. 240,000 ha • Current production is about 700,000 MT of paddy (400,000 MT of milled rice) • Annual consumption of milled rice is 1 million MT • About 60% of rice consumed is imported
  4. 4. Contribution of various ecologies to production Ecology % of Area under cultivation % contribution to total production Ave. Yield (MT/ha) Rainfed lowland 80.0 80.0 3.5 Upland 6.0 2.0 1.0 Irrigated 14.0 18.0 4.5
  5. 5. Constraints to achieving self-sufficiency in rice PRODUCTION Poor seed distribution system Poor land development Very low mechanization Poor water management Drought Poor soil fertility Poor fertilizer management Poor grain quality Pest and Diseases • • Marketing Poor branding Inadequate advertising Underdeveloped marketing channels Processing Inadequate drying infrastructure Inadequate storage infrastructure Inadequate modern mills Production Marketing Processing

  9. 9. Challenges • Data management • Germplasm management • Inadequate infrastructure for seed storage • Lack for equipment for phenotyping • Inadequate support for genotyping • Inadequate middle level staff support • Inadequate funding
