Troubled retailer Aeropostale is
launching a licensing program, seeking
to raise its profile and lure back ever-
fickle millennial consumers that in re-
cent years have turned to fast-fashion
retailers. The licensing program will be-
gin in the U.S.
In seeking licensing agreements
across a range of categories from home
products and footwear to consumer
electronics, footwear, outerwear, cos-
metics and eye glasses, the chain is try-
ing to sharpen focus on a core brand
that was once a staple of teenage ap-
parel, Aeropostale’s Justin Meno says.
It has landed its first licensing pact for
bedding and bath products with India-
based supplier Himatsingka with a goal
delivering the first products by mid-
2016.
The licensing effort will focus on
the Aeropostale and PS by Aeropostale
brands.
“These things are cyclical and we
believe that fast-fashion will eventually
go away,” Meno says. “We know the
market goes in phases and we have a
strong brand name with a lot of recogni-
tion and when we talk to consumers, it
is top of mind. Brand equity is not on a
balance sheet, but it’s a very real thing.”
Aeropostale’s push into licensing is
driven in part by a need to re-establish
the brand with consumers, Meno says.
In moving into new distribution channels
with licensees, Aeropostale is hoping to

The entertainment licensing com-
munity is looking at a full schedule of
familiar film properties over the next
three years, whether they’re sequels
of theatrical releases that have already
shown strength, remakes of famed films
from bygone eras, or properties that are
well known to specific audience groups,
whether as books, videogames or from
some other medium.
It’s a pattern that’s prevailed for
several years in Hollywood, and the
next three years – as shown in the chart
that begins on page 5 -- offer multiple
examples of all the scenarios men-
tioned above.
Challenging for original IP
Some of the licensing programs
based on sequels represent attempts
to leverage the strength of a property
that didn’t attract much support when
it first came to market as original IP. In
an era of so many known quantities that
retailers and licensees can get behind,
it’s rare for a film based on an original
story to build licensing momentum in
advance of its premiere.
Take a look for example, at Frozen.
Though an adaptation of Hans Christian
Anderson’s “The Snow Queen,” it was
a new tale to the vast majority of the
audience, and became an unexpected
hit in late 2013. Disney and its licens-
ees have spent much of the time since
catching up with demand, and Frozen is
now firmly in Disney’s “franchise” fac-
tory.
The information in the chart was
assembled from a variety of places,

Lionsgate Entertainment completed
transitioning to an internal licensing
group, adding two final properties, Or-
ange is the New Black and Dork Dia-
ries, to its responsibilities, Lionsgate’s
Randy Shoemaker says. Lionsgate
previously delegated some licensing
responsibilities for its IP to Striker En-
tertainment. Lionsgate began shifting
to an internal staff last year, capping it
with the hiring of former DreamWorks
executive Kerry Phelan as EVP of Glob-
al Franchise Management and Strate-
gic Partnerships.
The Peter Rabbit TV series is ex-
panding its reach outside cable. The
series, which wrapped up a second
season on May 30 on Nickelodeon in
the U.S. and Cbeebies in the U.K., will
be at the heart of a new Peter Rabbit
Adventure Playground under an IP li-
censing agreement Silvergate Media
signed with Willows Activity Farm in the
UK. Silvergate produces the show and
the section will have 10 activies based
on Peter Rabbit characters. Silvergate
represents Penguin Random House,
which owns the rights to Peter Rabbit
and is readying promotions for 2016
marking the 150th anniversary of author
Beatrix Potter’s birth. The deal is the
first time the Peter Rabbit IP has been
applied to a park. Construction began
late last month and is expected to be
complete by spring 2016. Willows Ac-
tivity Farm also is converting its Curly
Tails café to a Peter Rabbit-themed res-
taurant.
Actress/comedian Rebel Wilson will
formally enter the fashion market this
month with a 25-piece limited edition
collection at Torrid plus-size stores.
Wilson, best known for her role in the
movie Pitch Perfect, is being featured in
a capsule collection that includes tops,
bottoms, dresses, jackets and acces-
sories in sizes 12 to 28. The Rebel for
Torrid line, which will debut at a launch
party on Oct. 22 at a Torrid store in Los
Angeles, was a direct-to-retail agree-
ment with the chain.
The National Sleep Foundation is
requesting proposals from established
international licensing agents to rep-
resent the National Sleep Foundation
brand. Domestic licensing is excluded.
Proposals are due November 13, 2015.

Colonial Williamsburg Founda-
tion’s license for flatware and silver-
ware with Reed & Barton is “transition-
ing” to its new owner Lenox Corp. with
no immediate plans for a change in the
product line, Williamsburg’s Melissa
Fraley Agguini says. Lenox gained the
Williamsburg license in buying Reed &
Barton out of bankruptcy earlier this
year for $22 million. Meanwhile, Wil-
liamsburg licensee York Wallcoverings
is readying a second wallpaper collec-
tion for launch in spring 2016, Agguini
says. The collection expands on the
current offering of 14 designs and 80
SKUs, which shipped earlier this year
as York replaced Blue Mountain Wall-
coverings as the wallpaper licensee.

DHX Media Planning Long Teletubbies Licensing Life
DHX Media’s relaunch of Teletubbies won’t start generating major increas-
es in merchandise sales and licensing royalties until 2017, as the company
works to broaden TV program distribution, CEO Dana Landry told analysts on
a conference call.
While DHX has increased its projected merchandise and loyalty revenue
for this year, the company isn’t “producing Teletubbies for minimum guar-
antees and we want royalties for years to come,” Landry said. Brands like
Teletubbies tend to have a 15-20-year life, against live action which is in the
7-10-year range, Landry said.
The new Teletubbies series is slated to launch in the U.K. in November
and reach international markets in early 2016. The Teletubbies brand has so
far landed 33 licensing agreements for toys and other products, Landry said.
“Over the coming two to three years, it is time to demonstrate our potential
in merchandising and licensing” as product agreements tied to Teletubbies
and other DHX programming, including “Twirlywoos” and “Make It Pop,” take
hold, he said
DHX’s Q4 merchandising and license revenue fell to $4 million from $4.5
million a year earlier owing to a lack of live tours. Minus the live tours, revenue
was up 16%. DHX’s CPLG licensing agency posted $4.8 million in revenue,
up from $3.2 million a year earlier, benefitting from representing Universal’s
Minions movie in Europe.

Jakks Pacific sues Wicked
Cool Toys, seeking $15 million in
damages in alleging a former execu-
tive “misappropriated” designs for
Cabbage Patch Kids-licensed prod-
ucts to secure a new agreement for
Wicked Cool. The suit, filed in New
York State Supreme Court, maintains
that Jeremy Padawer, a former Exec-
utive VP at Jakks, joined Wicked Cool
as co-president in 2013. The suit says
Padawer helped convince Cabbage
Patch Kids licensor Original Appala-
chian Artworks to switch the license
to his new company in May 2014,
about seven months before a similar
licensing agreement with Jakks was
to expire. Jakks had renewed the li-
censing pact with Original Appala-
chian several times since 2004 and
was in discussions on a new contract
covering 2015-2018, Jakks said. Orig-
inal Appalachian’s pact with Wicked
Cool runs through Dec. 31, 2018. In
addition to licensed products, the
suit says Wicked Cool misappropri-
ated Jakks designs and sculptures
for Cabbage Patch Products. Jakks’
claims are “entirely without merit”
and Wicked Cool will “vigorously de-
fend itself” against “baseless allega-
tions,” Wicked Cool said in a state-
ment. A Jakks spokesperson said
“Jakks does not comment on legal
matters.”
The NBCUniversal licensing arm
will be part of the newly formed Uni-
versal Kids Production group that will
develop content for families and chil-
dren, Universal said. Universal hired
Nickelodeon executive Teri Weiss as
a senior vice president to head up the
new organization, the company said.
The division will leverage Universal’s
existing IP as well as new original
content across all platforms.
Scholastic extends its publish-
ing agreement with Lego through
2019, a deal that includes the first
Lego pop-up book due in 2016.
Polaroid is moving to expand
its reach into Europe, Australia and
New Zealand with lifestyle merchan-
dise that draws on the photography
brand. Polaroid, working with its
agent The Sharpe Co., has developed
a new styleguide featuring camera il-
lustrations and images that is being
launched this week at Brand Licens-
ing Expo in London. Sharpe is trying
to bring the Polaroid brand into ap-
parel, accessories, home and paper
goods, gifts, travel and collectibles.
Trancas International Films is
seeking to expand licensing for its
Halloween movies into apparel, art
work, games and posters as it switch-
es to an agency, Creative Licens-
ing Corp.’s Stephanie Marlis says.
Creative’s agreement with Trancas
includes taking over management of
several existing license agreements
with Rubie’s Costume Co., Mondo
(posters) and Universal Horror Nights,
Marlis says.
Inter Parfums, having generat-
ed more than $80 million annually in
Mont Blanc perfume sales, extended
its license with the brand to 2025.
The original 10-year agreement was
to expire in 2020. Inter Parfums’ sales
of the Mont Blanc perfume more than
quadrupled over four years through
Macy’s and other retailers.

tion of the Peg + Cat TV series and
support educational outreach proj-
ects based on it in Pittsburgh, PA The

censee for pop singer Gwen Stefani’s

LIMA Survey: Fashion Hit
$30.8B in 2014
Global retail sales of licensed merchan-
dise based on fashion properties reached
US$30.8B in 2014, according to results of
the LIMA Global Licensing Industry Survey.
That’s 12.7% of the US$241.5B global li-
censing business.
North America (defined in this report as
U.S./Canada) is by far the largest in terms
of sales of fashion-licensed goods, ac-
counting for 55.6% of global retail sales,
or US$17.1B. That’s the lowest percentage
for any major property type in the licensing
business, trailed only by the entertainment/
character sector, where it accounts for
$42.6% of the global business.
The report is free to all LIMA member
companies, with a price of $750 for non-
members. It’s in two sections – the core
report with primary results, as well as ex-
tensive analysis on the global licensing marketplace as well
as on the general landscape in major product classifications;
and an appendix of more than 120 charts and tables giving
regional breakdowns, as well as details on ten major coun-

broaden awareness of its brand. It also
will seek out licensees with experience
selling branded product. For example,
Himatsingka also has a license for Kate
Spade New York.
The licensed products won’t be sold
through Aeropostale stores, rather tar-
get department stores, mid-tier retailers
and warehouse clubs, Meno says. And
Aeropostale brand won’t be licensed for
apparel, but PS by Aeropostale, which
carries a lower profile and targets 4-12
year olds, will be available for clothing
and accessories, he says.
“We strayed from our business
model a little bit and we tried to be
something and become more fast-fash-
ion in bringing in sub-brands,” Meno
says.
“We were a little over-assorted and
we still believe strongly the millennials
and our values are aligned.
“We have to go back and earn their
trust and respect again and the licens-
ing will help reinforce the brand. And
we will have licensees that will be able
to execute in certain product categories
better than we ever could.”
In international markets, where
Aeropostale has 292 licensed locations
operated by 10 licensees, the chain will
continue to rely on local operators to
drive awareness of the brand.
It has 115 shop-in-shops in Liver-
pool department stores in Mexico, and
Arvind Lifestyle is expected to open in
November the first of 55 mall-based
and in-store locations in India. Aero-
postale is aiming for 60 stores and 200
shop-in-shops in India longer term.
The chain also will begin is expan-
sion in Europe in November when li-
censee Shuz 4 U opens the first Areo-
postale store in Dublin, Ireland. Shuz
also operates licensed Skechers stores
in Ireland.

The licensing program will be- gin in the U.S. In seeking licensing agreements across a range of categories from home products and footwear to consumer electronics, footwear, outerwear, cos- metics and eye glasses, the chain is try- ing to sharpen focus on a core brand that was once a staple of teenage ap- parel, Aeropostale’s Justin Meno says. It has landed its first licensing pact for bedding and bath products with India- based supplier Himatsingka with a goal delivering the first products by mid- 2016. The licensing effort will focus on the Aeropostale and PS by Aeropostale brands. “These things are cyclical and we believe that fast-fashion will eventually go away,” Meno says. “We know the market goes in phases and we have a strong brand name with a lot of recogni- tion and when we talk to consumers, it is top of mind. Brand equity is not on a balance sheet, but it’s a very real thing.” Aeropostale’s push into licensing is driven in part by a need to re-establish the brand with consumers, Meno says. In moving into new distribution channels with licensees, Aeropostale is hoping to Troubled Aeropostale Sees Value In Its Brand, Embarks on Broad Product Licensing Effort CONTINUED ON PAGE 9 The entertainment licensing com- munity is looking at a full schedule of familiar film properties over the next three years, whether they’re sequels of theatrical releases that have already shown strength, remakes of famed films from bygone eras, or properties that are well known to specific audience groups, whether as books, videogames or from some other medium. It’s a pattern that’s prevailed for several years in Hollywood, and the next three years – as shown in the chart that begins on page 5 -- offer multiple examples of all the scenarios men- tioned above. Challenging for original IP Some of the licensing programs based on sequels represent attempts to leverage the strength of a property that didn’t attract much support when it first came to market as original IP. In an era of so many known quantities that retailers and licensees can get behind, it’s rare for a film based on an original story to build licensing momentum in advance of its premiere. Take a look for example, at Frozen. Though an adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson’s “The Snow Queen,” it was a new tale to the vast majority of the audience, and became an unexpected hit in late 2013. Disney and its licens- ees have spent much of the time since catching up with demand, and Frozen is now firmly in Disney’s “franchise” fac- tory. The information in the chart was assembled from a variety of places, CONTINUED ON PAGE 5
  • 2. Lionsgate Entertainment completed transitioning to an internal licensing group, adding two final properties, Or- ange is the New Black and Dork Dia- ries, to its responsibilities, Lionsgate’s Randy Shoemaker says. Lionsgate previously delegated some licensing responsibilities for its IP to Striker En- tertainment. Lionsgate began shifting to an internal staff last year, capping it with the hiring of former DreamWorks executive Kerry Phelan as EVP of Glob- al Franchise Management and Strate- gic Partnerships. The Peter Rabbit TV series is ex- panding its reach outside cable. The series, which wrapped up a second season on May 30 on Nickelodeon in the U.S. and Cbeebies in the U.K., will be at the heart of a new Peter Rabbit Adventure Playground under an IP li- censing agreement Silvergate Media signed with Willows Activity Farm in the UK. Silvergate produces the show and the section will have 10 activies based on Peter Rabbit characters. Silvergate represents Penguin Random House, which owns the rights to Peter Rabbit and is readying promotions for 2016 marking the 150th anniversary of author Beatrix Potter’s birth. The deal is the first time the Peter Rabbit IP has been applied to a park. Construction began late last month and is expected to be complete by spring 2016. Willows Ac- tivity Farm also is converting its Curly Tails café to a Peter Rabbit-themed res- taurant. Actress/comedian Rebel Wilson will formally enter the fashion market this month with a 25-piece limited edition collection at Torrid plus-size stores. Wilson, best known for her role in the movie Pitch Perfect, is being featured in a capsule collection that includes tops, bottoms, dresses, jackets and acces- sories in sizes 12 to 28. The Rebel for Torrid line, which will debut at a launch party on Oct. 22 at a Torrid store in Los Angeles, was a direct-to-retail agree- ment with the chain. The National Sleep Foundation is requesting proposals from established international licensing agents to rep- resent the National Sleep Foundation brand. Domestic licensing is excluded. Proposals are due November 13, 2015. For more information, contact: Tom Clifford tclifford@sleepfoundation.org. Colonial Williamsburg Founda- tion’s license for flatware and silver- ware with Reed & Barton is “transition- ing” to its new owner Lenox Corp. with no immediate plans for a change in the product line, Williamsburg’s Melissa Fraley Agguini says. Lenox gained the Williamsburg license in buying Reed & Barton out of bankruptcy earlier this year for $22 million. Meanwhile, Wil- liamsburg licensee York Wallcoverings is readying a second wallpaper collec- tion for launch in spring 2016, Agguini says. The collection expands on the current offering of 14 designs and 80 SKUs, which shipped earlier this year as York replaced Blue Mountain Wall- coverings as the wallpaper licensee. While DHX has increased its projected merchandise and loyalty revenue for this year, the company isn’t “producing Teletubbies for minimum guar- antees and we want royalties for years to come,” Landry said. Brands like Teletubbies tend to have a 15-20-year life, against live action which is in the 7-10-year range, Landry said. The new Teletubbies series is slated to launch in the U.K. in November and reach international markets in early 2016. The Teletubbies brand has so far landed 33 licensing agreements for toys and other products, Landry said. “Over the coming two to three years, it is time to demonstrate our potential in merchandising and licensing” as product agreements tied to Teletubbies and other DHX programming, including “Twirlywoos” and “Make It Pop,” take hold, he said DHX’s Q4 merchandising and license revenue fell to $4 million from $4.5 million a year earlier owing to a lack of live tours. Minus the live tours, revenue was up 16%. DHX’s CPLG licensing agency posted $4.8 million in revenue, up from $3.2 million a year earlier, benefitting from representing Universal’s Minions movie in Europe. Jakks Pacific sues Wicked Cool Toys, seeking $15 million in damages in alleging a former execu- tive “misappropriated” designs for Cabbage Patch Kids-licensed prod- ucts to secure a new agreement for Wicked Cool. The suit, filed in New York State Supreme Court, maintains that Jeremy Padawer, a former Exec- utive VP at Jakks, joined Wicked Cool as co-president in 2013. The suit says Padawer helped convince Cabbage Patch Kids licensor Original Appala- chian Artworks to switch the license to his new company in May 2014, about seven months before a similar licensing agreement with Jakks was to expire. Jakks had renewed the li- censing pact with Original Appala- chian several times since 2004 and was in discussions on a new contract covering 2015-2018, Jakks said. Orig- inal Appalachian’s pact with Wicked Cool runs through Dec. 31, 2018. In addition to licensed products, the suit says Wicked Cool misappropri- ated Jakks designs and sculptures for Cabbage Patch Products. Jakks’ claims are “entirely without merit” and Wicked Cool will “vigorously de- fend itself” against “baseless allega- tions,” Wicked Cool said in a state- ment. A Jakks spokesperson said “Jakks does not comment on legal matters.” The NBCUniversal licensing arm will be part of the newly formed Uni- versal Kids Production group that will develop content for families and chil- dren, Universal said. Universal hired Nickelodeon executive Teri Weiss as a senior vice president to head up the new organization, the company said. The division will leverage Universal’s existing IP as well as new original content across all platforms. Scholastic extends its publish- ing agreement with Lego through 2019, a deal that includes the first Lego pop-up book due in 2016. Polaroid is moving to expand its reach into Europe, Australia and New Zealand with lifestyle merchan- dise that draws on the photography brand. Polaroid, working with its agent The Sharpe Co., has developed a new styleguide featuring camera il- lustrations and images that is being launched this week at Brand Licens- ing Expo in London. Sharpe is trying to bring the Polaroid brand into ap- parel, accessories, home and paper goods, gifts, travel and collectibles. Trancas International Films is seeking to expand licensing for its Halloween movies into apparel, art work, games and posters as it switch- es to an agency, Creative Licens- ing Corp.’s Stephanie Marlis says. Creative’s agreement with Trancas includes taking over management of several existing license agreements with Rubie’s Costume Co., Mondo (posters) and Universal Horror Nights, Marlis says. Inter Parfums, having generat- ed more than $80 million annually in Mont Blanc perfume sales, extended its license with the brand to 2025. The original 10-year agreement was to expire in 2020. Inter Parfums’ sales of the Mont Blanc perfume more than quadrupled over four years through Macy’s and other retailers. Mattel signs as the master toy li- censee for pop singer Gwen Stefani’s new “Kuu Kuu Harajuku” animated TV series that’s scheduled to launch on Australia’s Network 10 in 2016, says Viz International’s Lapkeng Wong, whose company is represent- ing the show for merchandising and licensing. It also will seek out licensees with experience selling branded product. For example, Himatsingka also has a license for Kate Spade New York. The licensed products won’t be sold through Aeropostale stores, rather tar- get department stores, mid-tier retailers and warehouse clubs, Meno says. And Aeropostale brand won’t be licensed for apparel, but PS by Aeropostale, which carries a lower profile and targets 4-12 year olds, will be available for clothing and accessories, he says. “We strayed from our business model a little bit and we tried to be something and become more fast-fash- ion in bringing in sub-brands,” Meno says. “We were a little over-assorted and we still believe strongly the millennials and our values are aligned. “We have to go back and earn their trust and respect again and the licens- ing will help reinforce the brand. And we will have licensees that will be able to execute in certain product categories better than we ever could.” In international markets, where Aeropostale has 292 licensed locations operated by 10 licensees, the chain will continue to rely on local operators to drive awareness of the brand. It has 115 shop-in-shops in Liver- pool department stores in Mexico, and Arvind Lifestyle is expected to open in November the first of 55 mall-based and in-store locations in India. Aero- postale is aiming for 60 stores and 200 shop-in-shops in India longer term. The chain also will begin is expan- sion in Europe in November when li- censee Shuz 4 U opens the first Areo- postale store in Dublin, Ireland. Shuz also operates licensed Skechers stores in Ireland.
