9. Grand Hotel Bernardin
GH Bernardin was facing high energy
expenses and an obsolete heating
system that needed to be renovated. The
management decided to partner with GGE
and replace the heating and cooling source
according to a new energy supply model.
GGE has built an energy facility with a heat
pump that exploits the energy of the sea.
The new energy plant exploits the energy
potential of the sea and uses two reversible
heat pumps to heat the hotel in winter and
cool it in summer.
Challenges:
• Hotel had to operate without interruptions,
• missing technical and building
documentation due to numerous
reconstructions and partial solutions,
• large amount of worn out or non-
functioning equipment,
• previous heating system was high
temperature system – new is low-
tempereature renewable,
• reconstruction required the acquisition of
local construction and other permits.
Results:
• Savings of 37% on heating costs,
• CO2
emissions reduced by 500
tonnes per year,
• no chemicals or other additives are
used in the process,
• the seawater returns to the sea
in the same condition as it was
before, only a few degrees cooler or
warmer.

Žito d.d. Maribor
Žito is one of the leading companies in the
nutrition industry in SE Europe. The main
problem of the existing energy system was
that the steam system was overdimensioned.
It means that the existing steam plant was
operating inefficiently with a very poor yield.
The system of two boilers (2 x 1.45 MW, 2 x
2,2 t / h) was several times larger than the
actual need for technological steam. Based
on the monitoring and analysis of steam
consumers we were able to determine the
actual steam demand profile. GGE has
provided a renovation of the steam boilers
for Žito. New, more efficient and economical
steam boilers have been installed including
the heat recovery of flue gases system.
