1. INCREASING EQUINE THERAPY PROGRAMS FOR WARRIORS, FAMILY MEMBERS and
SURVIVORS OF KIA
Abstract
INTRODUCTION/PROBLEM: As the active duty military begins to downsize, those who cannot
transfer to the Reserves or Retire, will be forced out into the civilian communities. Transitions
are difficult for all, but for Veterans, there are unique and distinct challenges. Not every soldier
is a Wounded Warrior. There are tools in place to assist in handling the challenges yet equine
therapy is minimal, especially for addressing the following: Domestic/Sexual Assault;
Alcohol/Drug Substance Abuse; Marriage and Relationships; Suicide.
PURPOSE: To develop a methodology and network between the Veterans Administration;
PATH International; Wounded Warrior Project; the Warrior Transition Units (WTU); and the
Community Care Units (CCU) for the establishment of protocols and procedures in the use of
equine therapy and Behavioral Health, Recovery and Transition.
DESCRIPTION OF CONTENT/METHODS: Incorporate the cadre of primary care physicians,
clinicians, therapists, etc. already utilized at the military medical treatment facilities. Educate
the warrior's primary care managers and Transition Coordinators of the various equine therapy
programs and levels which can be tailored to the individual warrior and/or his/her family's
needs. Educate the local and regional therapeutic riding centers on the different levels of care
other than PTSD and TBI for warriors. Encourage continued education and certification for the
staff at the military medical treatments (paid for by the VA); begin apprenticeship and
mentoring training for the warriors.
DESCRIPTION OF CONTENTS/RESULTS: The outcome for the equine facilities is a larger number
of warriors who may not have severe medical issues, but are capable and competent to assist,
volunteer, certify and transition into the equine industry. There are successful programs
already in the US, but the need will continue to grow. The equine industry must be proactive
and seize the opportunity to work with all of the military branches: Air Force, Army, Coast

2. Guard, Marines and Navy. Each branch has Reserve and Guard service members who can profit
from being involved as a volunteer or as paid staff.
SUMMARY/CONCLUSION: The Secretary of Defense has an office specifically dedicated to
Wounded Warriors and there is an Undersecretary of Defense for Personnel Readiness. The
subject is serious and relevant. With the processes already in place, it's time to advance to the
next level and make PATH International the leader and recognized name for setting the
standard for equine therapy in support of Wounded Warrior/Service member and Military
Families. The potential and possibilities to influence and teach about equines to current and
future generations is endless.
