INTRODUCTION
DEFINITION OF AIR-CONDITIONING:-
 Air conditioning is the process of altering the
properties
of air (primarily temperature and humidity) to
more favorable conditions.
 The control of these conditions may be
desirable to maintain the health and comfort
of the occupants, or to meet the
requirements of industrial processes
irrespective of the external climatic
conditions.
HISTORY
 In 1902, the first modern electrical air
conditioning unit was invented by Willis
Carrier in Bufallo, Newyork.
 The first air conditioner, designed and built in
Buffalo by Carrier, began working on 17 July
1902.
WORKING PRINCIPLE OF
AC
 Air conditioners and refrigerators work the same way.
 Air conditioners use refrigerant that easily convert from a gas to a liquid and
back again.
 The machine has four main parts. They are a compressor, a condenser, an
expansion device and an evaporator.
 The working fluid arrives at the compressor as a cool, low pressure gas. The
compressor compresses this refrigerant resulting into high temperature and
pressure gas.
 The working fluid leaves the compressor and flows into the condenser. The
condenser condenses the refrigerant and change the hot gas into high pressure
liquid.
 The liquid goes into the expansion device where it expands and its pressure
drops.
 Now it goes to evaporator where the liquid changes to gas and evaporates, it
extracts heat from the air around it.
 By the time the working fluid leaves the evaporator, it is a cool, low pressure
BLOCK DIAGRAM OF AC
TYPES OF AIR
CONDITIONING SYSTEM
 Depending upon the need or application, the AC
system is designed in different way but the
working principle remains the same.
 Types of AC
1) Window air-conditioning system
2)Split air-conditioning system
3)Package air-conditioning system
4)Central air-conditioning system
CENTRAL AC SYSTEM
 The central air conditioning plants or the
systems are used when large buildings, hotels,
theaters, airports, shopping malls etc. are to
be air conditioned completely.
 A method of structural cooling in which a
centralized unit cools and dehumidifies air
before circulating it throughout the building.
 The main unit is located outdoors or in isolated
area of a building.
LAYOUT OF CENTRAL
AC
WORKING OF CENTRAL
AC
 Central air conditioners circulates cool air
through a system of supply and return ducts.
Supply ducts and registers (i.e., openings in
the walls, floors, or ceilings covered by grills)
carry cooled air from the air conditioner to the
home. This cooled air becomes warmer as it
circulates through the home, then it flows back
to the central air conditioner through return
ducts and registers.
TYPES OF CENTRAL AC
An outdoor metal cabinet contains
the condenser and compressor,
and an indoor cabinet contains the
evaporator
 A central air conditioner is either a split-system
unit or a packaged unit.
Split-system Packaged Unit
The evaporator, condenser, and
compressor are all located in one
cabinet, which usually is placed on a
roof or on the ground
SPLIT-SYSTEM CENTRAL
AC
 In a split-system central air conditioner, an
outdoor metal cabinet contains the condenser
and compressor, and an indoor cabinet contains
the evaporator.
 In many split-system air conditioners, this indoor
cabinet also contains a furnace or the indoor
part of a heat pump. The air conditioner's
evaporator coil is installed in the cabinet or main
supply duct of this furnace or heat pump.
 If your home already has a furnace but no air
conditioner, a split-system is the most
economical central air conditioner to install.
PACKAGED UNIT CENTRAL
AC
 In a packaged central air conditioner, the evaporator,
condenser, and compressor are all located in one
cabinet, which usually is placed on a roof or on a
concrete slab next to the house's foundation.
 This type of air conditioner is also used in small
commercial buildings.
 Air supply and return ducts come from indoors
through the home's exterior wall or roof to connect
with the packaged air conditioner, which is usually
located outdoors.
 Packaged air conditioners often include electric
heating coils or a natural gas furnace. This
combination of air conditioner and central heater
eliminates the need for a separate furnace indoors
COMPONENTS OF
CENTRAL AC
 Air handling unit(AHU)
 Supplying duct
 Return duct
 Diffusers/Registers
 Compressor
 Condenser
 Expansion device
 Evaporator
 Thermostat
AIR HANDLING UNIT
 The function of AHU is to suck air from the rooms
through return duct and let it pass through air filters,
then discharging the conditioned air back to the rooms.
 It is shaped like a box that contain some equipments
such as filter,blower etc.
 It is located at the top of building and the door of room is
always closed.
SUPPLYING DUCT
 It supplies the conditioned air from air handling
unit (AHU) to the space or room.
 It is also called as main duct.
 From main duct a number of duct branches
are provided for the each room.
RETURN AIR
INLET(DUCT)
 This component is to regulate and extract air
from a room and recycle it.
 Use of any ventilating, heating and air
conditioning.
 The air will force air process which blows
through the duct.
 Located either in hallway or in the ceiling at AHU
Rooms.
DIFFUSERS/REGISTERS/G
RILLS
 It distributes and directs the conditioned air to
the occupied space.
 It has a rectangular or square face incorporated
with vanes,blades etc.
 It controls the amount of conditioned air and
deflects into the space.
 Located at the top of ceiling and it will come in
several types.
THERMOSTAT
 It controls the temperature and maintains a
constant temperature in the fixed range
throughout the room.
 It automatically switches the compressor ON
or OFF as the temperature rises or falls .
TYPE OF GAS THAT USED AS
REFRIGERANT
 Chlorodifluoromethane also known
hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC).
 Usually known as R22 gas.
 Very high quality and competitive price.
ADVANTAGES
Improves indoor air quality.
Level of indoor noise is almost negligible.
Maintains a constant temperature and
humidity throughout the conditioned space.
DISADVANTAGES
The size for the AC unit is large.
The cost of installing the system is high.
SUMMARY
 Very large buildings, hotels, theaters,
airports, shopping malls can be air
conditioned completely and economically.
 Central AC system provides uniform
distribution of conditioned air throughout
the whole building or space.

  • 3. INTRODUCTION DEFINITION OF AIR-CONDITIONING:-  Air conditioning is the process of altering the properties of air (primarily temperature and humidity) to more favorable conditions.  The control of these conditions may be desirable to maintain the health and comfort of the occupants, or to meet the requirements of industrial processes irrespective of the external climatic conditions.
  • 4. HISTORY  In 1902, the first modern electrical air conditioning unit was invented by Willis Carrier in Bufallo, Newyork.  The first air conditioner, designed and built in Buffalo by Carrier, began working on 17 July 1902.
  • 5. WORKING PRINCIPLE OF AC  Air conditioners and refrigerators work the same way.  Air conditioners use refrigerant that easily convert from a gas to a liquid and back again.  The machine has four main parts. They are a compressor, a condenser, an expansion device and an evaporator.  The working fluid arrives at the compressor as a cool, low pressure gas. The compressor compresses this refrigerant resulting into high temperature and pressure gas.  The working fluid leaves the compressor and flows into the condenser. The condenser condenses the refrigerant and change the hot gas into high pressure liquid.  The liquid goes into the expansion device where it expands and its pressure drops.  Now it goes to evaporator where the liquid changes to gas and evaporates, it extracts heat from the air around it.  By the time the working fluid leaves the evaporator, it is a cool, low pressure
  • 7. TYPES OF AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM  Depending upon the need or application, the AC system is designed in different way but the working principle remains the same.  Types of AC 1) Window air-conditioning system 2)Split air-conditioning system 3)Package air-conditioning system 4)Central air-conditioning system
  • 8. CENTRAL AC SYSTEM  The central air conditioning plants or the systems are used when large buildings, hotels, theaters, airports, shopping malls etc. are to be air conditioned completely.  A method of structural cooling in which a centralized unit cools and dehumidifies air before circulating it throughout the building.  The main unit is located outdoors or in isolated area of a building.
  • 10. WORKING OF CENTRAL AC  Central air conditioners circulates cool air through a system of supply and return ducts. Supply ducts and registers (i.e., openings in the walls, floors, or ceilings covered by grills) carry cooled air from the air conditioner to the home. This cooled air becomes warmer as it circulates through the home, then it flows back to the central air conditioner through return ducts and registers.
  • 11. TYPES OF CENTRAL AC An outdoor metal cabinet contains the condenser and compressor, and an indoor cabinet contains the evaporator  A central air conditioner is either a split-system unit or a packaged unit. Split-system Packaged Unit The evaporator, condenser, and compressor are all located in one cabinet, which usually is placed on a roof or on the ground
  • 12. SPLIT-SYSTEM CENTRAL AC  In a split-system central air conditioner, an outdoor metal cabinet contains the condenser and compressor, and an indoor cabinet contains the evaporator.  In many split-system air conditioners, this indoor cabinet also contains a furnace or the indoor part of a heat pump. The air conditioner's evaporator coil is installed in the cabinet or main supply duct of this furnace or heat pump.  If your home already has a furnace but no air conditioner, a split-system is the most economical central air conditioner to install.
  • 13. PACKAGED UNIT CENTRAL AC  In a packaged central air conditioner, the evaporator, condenser, and compressor are all located in one cabinet, which usually is placed on a roof or on a concrete slab next to the house's foundation.  This type of air conditioner is also used in small commercial buildings.  Air supply and return ducts come from indoors through the home's exterior wall or roof to connect with the packaged air conditioner, which is usually located outdoors.  Packaged air conditioners often include electric heating coils or a natural gas furnace. This combination of air conditioner and central heater eliminates the need for a separate furnace indoors
  • 14. COMPONENTS OF CENTRAL AC  Air handling unit(AHU)  Supplying duct  Return duct  Diffusers/Registers  Compressor  Condenser  Expansion device  Evaporator  Thermostat
  • 15. AIR HANDLING UNIT  The function of AHU is to suck air from the rooms through return duct and let it pass through air filters, then discharging the conditioned air back to the rooms.  It is shaped like a box that contain some equipments such as filter, blower etc.  It is located at the top of building and the door of room is always closed.
  • 16. SUPPLYING DUCT  It supplies the conditioned air from air handling unit (AHU) to the space or room.  It is also called as main duct.  From main duct a number of duct branches are provided for the each room.
  • 17. RETURN AIR INLET(DUCT)  This component is to regulate and extract air from a room and recycle it.  Use of any ventilating, heating and air conditioning.  The air will force air process which blows through the duct.  Located either in hallway or in the ceiling at AHU Rooms.
  • 18. DIFFUSERS/REGISTERS/G RILLS  It distributes and directs the conditioned air to the occupied space.  It has a rectangular or square face incorporated with vanes, blades etc.  It controls the amount of conditioned air and deflects into the space.  Located at the top of ceiling and it will come in several types.
  • 19. THERMOSTAT  It controls the temperature and maintains a constant temperature in the fixed range throughout the room.  It automatically switches the compressor ON or OFF as the temperature rises or falls .
  • 20. TYPE OF GAS THAT USED AS REFRIGERANT  Chlorodifluoromethane also known hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC).  Usually known as R22 gas.  Very high quality and competitive price.
  • 21. ADVANTAGES Improves indoor air quality. Level of indoor noise is almost negligible. Maintains a constant temperature and humidity throughout the conditioned space.
  • 22. DISADVANTAGES The size for the AC unit is large. The cost of installing the system is high.
  • 23. SUMMARY  Very large buildings, hotels, theaters, airports, shopping malls can be air conditioned completely and economically.  Central AC system provides uniform distribution of conditioned air throughout the whole building or space.
