2. This is an example of shape. The overlapping blocks create an interesting composition which almost looks like an abstract room. The space that has been created can either be positive or negative depending on how one looks at it. The darker colours recede where as the lighter colours come forward, creating a sense of depth even though the image consists of flat shapes of colour.
3. This is also an example of shape and also one of the Gestalt Principles “figure and ground”. The cats are flat shapes on a background which is also flat. The two shapes only differ in the fact that they are opposite colours, black and white.
4. This is an example of volume and form. The clouds are full and fluffy. One can feel and see the sky it occupies. They also seem to be expanding. The curves and bulges of the clouds give them real volume.
5. This is an example of volume and form, the bottle is occupying space, whish seems to be flat. The bottle casts a shadow into the flat space which gives the bottle form. One can see the curvature of the glass due to the changes in shape of the lighting within the bottle.
6. This flat image has positive and negative space. The green background is the negative space. The image consists of an abstract figure which is completely flat and is made up of flat geometric shapes of coloured blocks.
7. One can see the depth and volume in this image. The girls are full forms, this is visible due to the shadows which curve around their arms and dresses. The rock in the background seems to be the same size as the girl in the foreground. This creates a deep receding space as it is clear the rock is very large, and is therefore far away.
8. One can see the true volume of the glass ball even though one can see through the ball to the writing it is resting on. The shapes within the ball are distorted giving the ball a rounded shape, the lighting on the ball reveals the curvature of the ball. The writing becomes smaller, giving the image also a sense of deep space.
9. This is an example of shape. The images have no volume what so ever because they are flat shapes of different colours. An interesting space has also been created because the birds are the same colour as the frame making them look as if they have been cut out of the image.
10. Here one can see a strong sense of volume. The curvature of the shape on the right hand side is visible due to the shadows that have been cast. The construction in the background also occupies space.
11. This rose is a computer generated image, but even though it is not real it appears to be full and occupying space. Its volume is being emphasized with the shadow and the petals look soft and full as if they are taking up space within the image.
12. This is a painting by the famous Salvador Dali. Dali is know for creating dreamlike images which look extremely real. This painting bellow is a good example of how he does that. The arms, legs and feet within the painting look round and full. Muscle is visible within the flesh and there is also a sense of depth with the perspective of the box the ‘body’ is resting on and one can see the horizon which appears to be far away in the distance.
13. In this still life depth and volume is clearly visible. The fullness of the wine glass along with the fruit and bowl create a real sense of volume. One can feel the roundness of the apples and feel the softness of the towel. There is shallow depth though, and clear negative space due to the flat background.
14. The roundness of the tea cup saucer creates a sense of form. One can picture a spiral engulfing the cup as it goes around.
15. This is an example of flat space. The different coloured glass creates images and shapes. The background and foreground is separated by the different colours used. The sun, ocean, candles and person all seem to be within the same space. There is no depth.
16. Another example of form and volume. The shapes of the spikes are clearly visible, one can feel the roundness of the cones along with the sharpness of the points.
17. This is volume within a flat space. There is not defined background, it creates a flat space. The water has volume, this is visible in the two drops and the ripples of the water.
18. This image has a flat picture space. There are defined shapes, wish look as if they have been carved into the background. There is no depth
19. This image consists of flat shapes/ silhouettes. The only sense of depth is the perspective of the M. This is also another example of ‘figure and ground’. The negative space could be the black or the white.
20. Another example a flat space and shapes. The entire image consists of flat black and white blocks. In some areas where the black and white has been swapped various shapes have been created.
21. This is the last example of volume. One can clearly see the volume and form of the icing which twirls around the cake. The picture space is small and crowded due to the fact the there are many cupcakes occupying one space.
