Billy Ray Harris, Homeless Man Who Returned Diamond Ring, Gets A New Home
One act of kindness has given a Missouri homeless man a new lease on life. Back in February, while
panhandling on a Kansas City street, Billy Ray Harris noticed that a woman had accidentally dropped
a diamond engagement ring in his cup, KCTV reported. He debated selling it, but decided to hold onto
it instead in case the woman returned, a decision that would prove to change the course of his life
forever. Sure enough, three days later, an exasperated Sarah Darling came back and asked if Harris
had the ring. He retrieved it from the cup and put it back on her finger.
So grateful for his honesty and kindness, Darling and her husband, Bill Krejci, decided to launch a

Extraordinary Altruism: Who Gives a Kidney to a Stranger?
I have a colleague who would not be alive today if it were not for a complete stranger, who volunteered
to give her a kidney. Her kidneys were failing, and she would not have survived for long. Now she is
healthy, and has been for some years. So I understand in a personal way that living kidney donation
is an extraordinary gift, a far-too-rare act of pure altruism. Meanwhile, more than 5,000 Americans
are dying every year while awaiting a kidney transplant. If the national rate of altruistic donation
matched that of Utah, the most altruistic state, it could yield more than 900 additional, life-saving
donations every year.

Good Samaritan saves children trapped in house fire
Eddie Hamilton didn't hesitate when he found out a nearby neighbor's house was on fire and three
children were trapped inside. "They were at the window screaming when I knocked it out. I just told
them to back up. I knocked it out and got them out," he said.
The fire happened just before 8 a.m. Monday. The children's mother got out and was screaming for help.
Hamilton immediately rescued a 10-year-old boy and 13-year-old girl. "They kept hollering somebody
else in there," Hamilton said. "I jumped in the window and crawled across the floor until I found him and
drug him to the window."
By that time, Hamilton said, the house was filled with smoke.
"You couldn't see nothing, you couldn't breathe inside. I came to the window twice, got air crawled back
in there again until I could find [him]," he said. "I could hear him moaning, he wasn't all the way out."
Hamilton found the 17-year-old and pulled him to a window but the teenager was too big for Hamilton to
get out. By that time, DeKalb County Firefighters arrived and took the teen to safety.
The firefighters and his wife credit Hamilton with saving the children.

There was once a man who lived with his
two sons. The two sons were always fighting
with each other. One day, the man decided to
teach his sons a lesson.
The man gave his younger son two large
sticks. He told the boy to break them. The boy
tried hard, but he could not break the sticks.
The older son also could not break the sticks.
At last, the man gave only one stick to each
son. He said, “Break them.” Each son broke his
stick easily.
The man said, “You are like these sticks. If
you work together, no one can break you. But if
you fight with each other all the time, one day,
someone will break both of you.”
After that lesson, the sons stopped fighting.
They started to work together.

FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS AND VALUES IN COSTA RICA
Approximately, 99.5% of all Costa Ricans consider family life fundamental in sustainable human
development. The traditional family structure is moving towards that of the “modern” families.
Unfortunately, there is a great number of people and couples who live alone. This situation is growing
day by day. A reduction in fertility and marriage, together with an increase in life expectancy, contribute
to an “aging” of population. In recent years, the number of one-parent families reached 10.3% of the
total number of families. Women head 20.7% of all households, a fact that places these families at
greater risks because of women´s disadvantages in terms of employment and income. Today, violence
within the family is now receiving more attention that it received thirty years ago. In fact , most women
are reporting violence and seeking help in government entities. The number of these complaints has
grown significantly each year, which is interpreted as positive in the sense that a problem hidden before
is now becoming more visible and public.
