USPS® Forced Meter Migration - How to Know if Your Postage Meter Will Soon be...
Changing clicks drive change
1. Changing the world, one
click at a time
In today’s digitally driven world it is no surprise that the way we help others should
adapt to follow. Digital activism has broughtabout positive social good at a greater
magnitudethan ever seen before, thus its use should be embraced and encouraged
in the future.
Jordan Pernari
2. Digital Activism is the use of new
information-communication technologies to support social
and citizen movements. (1) It is often referred to as Clicktivism.
3. “Clicktivism is not exclusivelythe
support or promotion of a cause
online. It is the use of digital media
for facilitating social change and
activism. More often than not this
takes the form of supporting and
promoting a cause on social media,
but it can include a whole a range of
activities” (2)
4. This form of activism is often viewed as
“enabling us to be lazy, cowardly, and, in
return, to feel good about it.” (3)
5. “Social media gives us a power
unmatched in history to bring important
causes to the attention of millions.” (4)
But that is not true…
6. “Despite the oft-repeated
claim that awareness does nothing,
it almost always does something —
something small, perhaps, but something
measurable.” (5)
7. “Every little bit adds up, so if we can find
ways to keep our message meaningful
over a longer period of time, we allow for
that momentum to happen. Maybe by
engaging and using these hashtag activists
to amplify our message — even if they are
unable to give — we can do just that.” (6)
9. “Collaborative environments
support and facilitate the emergent
engagement and participation of the
crowd which leads to empowered
users, who know that their
contribution can make a difference,
and are thus more committed and
more satisfied than passive
viewers.” (7)
10. Cellphoneusers who have already
donated via text message once,
generally,are highly satisfied by
the experience and the vast
majority (90%) say that they will
donate this way again.(8)
12. This virtual givingtrend expands even further
than text-to-donate campaigns into
thousands of online fundraisers.
One of these fundraisers is the
Project for Awesome.
13. “During Project for Awesome, an
online initiative, thousands of people
post videos about and advocating for charities
that decrease the overall level of world suck. As a
community, we promote these videos and raise money
for the charities.” (10)
15. And digital activism extends further than
raising awareness and collecting donations.
16. “The two forms of
activisms [online and
offline] were, however,
strongly positively
correlated – people who
tended to be active in
virtual, tended to be
active in real life and vice
versa.” (11)
17. “The real power of social media, compared to
passive mass media, is that they can be used by
any person or self-organizing group for a
common goal.” (7)
18. The Women’s March on
Washington is a prime
example of online
participation becoming
offline action.
19. Following the results of the
2016 Presidential Election,
Theresa Shook sought out the
online Facebook group she was a
part of to vent and post that she
thought a pro-women
demonstration was needed. (12)
20. When no one else took the lead, she created a
Facebook event herself to “make a bold and
clear statement to this country on the
national and local level that we will
not be silent and we will not let
anyone roll back the rights
we have fought and
struggled to get.” (13)
21. On January 21st 2017, 673 marches with
4,800,000+ participants occurred
worldwide (14)
22. While there can often be negative connotations associated with digital
activism, the overwhelming good that is a direct result of it far
outweighs those perceptions. If we truly embrace the power and reach
digital activism has,the change we can achieve will know no bounds.
