Stranger Things: The Game
Realistic backgrounds, different
shades used in the trees, to
make them look 3d. This gives
an artistic background whilst
keeping it a classic pixel art
game.
Two different versions, one
more details it keeping pixel
art, this is available on larger
devices such PS4, whereas
the simpler version is only
mobile devices.
It is loyal to the television series, making it appeal to the large fan base surrounding the series.
Making it available on both mobile devices and game consoles, it appeals to different groups of
the gamer community, making the audience large and diverse. This will benefit the game
company and Netflix, as it will attract gamers to watch the series.
The music used in the game is from the series – the theme tune and the backing music from
certain scenes, used in the same places in the game. For example, the same backing music from
a scene where the boys are in the wood is used in the game for a mini game set in the woods.
Super Mario Bros-1983
Not scroll background, but the background stays the
same and the character moves around, the
background still. The characters can only move
within the background, meaning they can only left
right or up and down. This makes the game suitable
for all ages as it is simple controls and concept.
Similar aesthetics throughout the different levels.
Simple characters, not too much
detail. The same structure, just using
different colours for outfits and hair.
The background is
repetitive, making it easy
to create.
The white line around the
characters make them
stand out against the
background, making them
the centre piece.
The characters don’t have shadings
on them to make them look
dynamic.
Appeals to the audience and keeping it simple and
repetitive, whist changing locations and levels of difficulty. It
is a classic 80’s game, it is treasured in the gaming
community.
Terraria
Shows the
interior buildings
as if they have
been cut in half.
A scroll background game, where the characters run
and attack enemies. Different locations? Change in
settings throughout the game, including new villages,
inside buildings etc.
A blurred background
(hills)with a more bold
aspect on the top
(usually a building),
giving the game more
depth then a game
like Super Mario Bros.
The game is a all range aged game, being simple
enough for younger kids and adults. It is available on
various platforms, making it accessible to all types of
gamers, whether that be handheld or consoles.
It’s a simple concept, but its made better by adding
buildings and different levels of difficulty and depth
of the scenery.
Can around the house, into other
rooms and upstairs. Small details in the
house such as lights, paintings, plants,
clocks, obstacles, etc.
Simple characters, which match the
aesthetics of the game.
Detailed backgrounds, different shades
o green in the trees to make it look
dynamic and 3d, this makes the game
look cleaner.
Jetpack JoyrideProgressive game, the
level of threat by enemies
gets harder as the game
goes on, the game speed
also changes, so it gets
progressively difficult as
the game continues.Coins available to collect, which
makes a ping noise (with a
positive correlation), making
the player feel achievement
during the game. It indicates
that them coins are a positive
attribute to the game. When
getting attacked by enemies,
the game makes a negative
bang sound which tells the
player not to do that.
Scroll background game, the location
changes as the game gets quicker and
harder, showing the player progression
as they are playing the game. This
makes them want to continue, to get to
the next background. The backgrounds
are similar, just with small changes,
such as a window which shows the sea
(see above).
A continuous game –
there is no end. This
makes a player want
to carry on as far as
they can, with a
sense of hope to
finish the game (you
can't). It’s a game for
all ages, there is not
inappropriate
content such as real
time killing or
language, thus
making it suitable for
both younger kids
and adults.
Fireboy and Watergirl
As the levels go on,
the levels get more
complex, with
more obstacle,
making the
player(s) think.
Available to player single of
multiplayer, only available on PC
consoles. It appeals to 7-12 year
olds, as it include no inappropriate
characters/language or violence, it
makes it perfect for younger
children to play. There are easy
controls for the players to use,
making it not too complex.
Progressive levels of
difficulty, with different
backgrounds to show
progression.
Still background, layers of bricks/ jumps are above a blurred
layer of bricks to give the game depth. The characters can
only go left, right or up within the square background walls.
There is no story/ adventure or enemies to kill, only
obstacles for the player to overcome.
The neutral greens and browns on the background
compliment the red and blue of the water and lava, making
them stand out against the background, making them eye
catching so the player doesn't accidently kill the characters
by going into the ‘forbidden area’.
Research Analysis
• Common features in my research is scroll backgrounds and games
where the characters have limited space to move (within the
background). The games are all progressive and have background
changes when the player has progressed through the game. They
all, also, use sound to give a positive/negative feeling to the player
when they collect a reward or do something bad. This influences
how the player plays the game as they are ‘controlled’ by these
sounds so they play correctly and get the most out of the game that
they can.
• I will use the scroll background with a depth element for the design
- blurred hills with buildings that stand out. A blue sky with red
buildings to make them stand out. The characters will be dressed in
grey outfits to contrast with the bright colours in the background.
The characters will only need 3 sequences – walking, stood still and
combat mode. This will make them walk more seamlessly and fight
more realistically.

The background is repetitive, making it easy to create. The white line around the characters make them stand out against the background, making them the centre piece. The characters don’t have shadings on them to make them look dynamic. Appeals to the audience and keeping it simple and repetitive, whist changing locations and levels of difficulty. It is a classic 80’s game, it is treasured in the gaming community.
  • 4. Terraria Shows the interior buildings as if they have been cut in half. A scroll background game, where the characters run and attack enemies. Different locations? Change in settings throughout the game, including new villages, inside buildings etc. A blurred background (hills)with a more bold aspect on the top (usually a building), giving the game more depth then a game like Super Mario Bros. The game is a all range aged game, being simple enough for younger kids and adults. It is available on various platforms, making it accessible to all types of gamers, whether that be handheld or consoles. It’s a simple concept, but its made better by adding buildings and different levels of difficulty and depth of the scenery. Can around the house, into other rooms and upstairs. Small details in the house such as lights, paintings, plants, clocks, obstacles, etc. Simple characters, which match the aesthetics of the game. Detailed backgrounds, different shades o green in the trees to make it look dynamic and 3d, this makes the game look cleaner.

Jetpack JoyrideProgressive game, the level of threat by enemies gets harder as the game goes on, the game speed also changes, so it gets progressively difficult as the game continues.Coins available to collect, which makes a ping noise (with a positive correlation), making the player feel achievement during the game. It indicates that them coins are a positive attribute to the game. When getting attacked by enemies, the game makes a negative bang sound which tells the player not to do that. Scroll background game, the location changes as the game gets quicker and harder, showing the player progression as they are playing the game. This makes them want to continue, to get to the next background. The backgrounds are similar, just with small changes, such as a window which shows the sea (see above). A continuous game – there is no end. This makes a player want to carry on as far as they can, with a sense of hope to finish the game (you can't). It’s a game for all ages, there is not inappropriate content such as real time killing or language, thus making it suitable for both younger kids and adults.
  • 6. Fireboy and Watergirl As the levels go on, the levels get more complex, with more obstacle, making the player(s) think. Available to player single of multiplayer, only available on PC consoles. It appeals to 7-12 year olds, as it include no inappropriate characters/language or violence, it makes it perfect for younger children to play. There are easy controls for the players to use, making it not too complex. Progressive levels of difficulty, with different backgrounds to show progression. Still background, layers of bricks/ jumps are above a blurred layer of bricks to give the game depth. The characters can only go left, right or up within the square background walls. There is no story/ adventure or enemies to kill, only obstacles for the player to overcome. The neutral greens and browns on the background compliment the red and blue of the water and lava, making them stand out against the background, making them eye catching so the player doesn't accidently kill the characters by going into the ‘forbidden area’.
  • 7. Research Analysis • Common features in my research is scroll backgrounds and games where the characters have limited space to move (within the background). The games are all progressive and have background changes when the player has progressed through the game. They all, also, use sound to give a positive/negative feeling to the player when they collect a reward or do something bad. This influences how the player plays the game as they are ‘controlled’ by these sounds so they play correctly and get the most out of the game that they can. • I will use the scroll background with a depth element for the design - blurred hills with buildings that stand out. A blue sky with red buildings to make them stand out. The characters will be dressed in grey outfits to contrast with the bright colours in the background. The characters will only need 3 sequences – walking, stood still and combat mode. This will make them walk more seamlessly and fight more realistically.
