1. Sunderland culture evaluation
Firstly, I looked at the initial brief and interpreted what I needed to and start to
map and plan how I was going to. Through the brief I learnt that it is about
Sunderland culture. I wanted to research and define what were the terms of
this brief so I started to investigate it and beginning from my audience from the
already 15 â 25 age rating I thought I could go deeper and get a bit more
specific with it. I also discussed potential run time of films and locations since
its set in Sunderland making a fictional movie can be hard because background
plays such an important role in film.
Once this was all done, I started to research into my client Sunderland culture. I
started with who are Sunderland culture and was led to their website and
found out how they started, what they do, how they do it, why they do it and
their operations. I learn they operate from multiple places across Sunderland
such as the national glass centre or the fire station. Learning about Sunderland
culture was a big part of my research knowing the ins and outs of the brief
helped me form a better understanding of my project overall. Once researching
into the client. I moved onto researching for my project and forming an initial
idea. This idea was a short horror film I wanted to get a rough but promising
idea for the Sunderland culture project I started with a PowerPoint and began
forming and answering questions that are important such as why is the idea
2. relevant? How will it work? Duration? Props and setting? Synopsis? I went into
all these questions and more in my blog. The reason I chose a horror film was
because of its broad range I thought it could be a good challenge for me as a
filmmaker to step into that world and really try with all these questions I
wanted to get a good look and understanding of what my idea sounded like so I
could research and move on with ease. Once discussing and coming up with
plot points and characters I moved on to making a synopsis this helped me
form my plans around that idea even if it was a quick synopsis, it helped me
develop crucial plans and production elements soon. I chose to film in a local
area near mine not only because of accessibility but because of its depressing
and bleak look I thought that would help and be a nice addition to the film
overall, giving it a good setting, I can build around.
After that I moved onto existing products, I wanted to research into five
existing films I thought it would be good if some of them were bases and were
filmed in Sunderland. I researched into I, Daniel Blake which was a film based in
Sunderland about two main characters struggling financially and finding a
footing. Both characters coming together to help each other despite the
government not caring about them. This movie was truly a masterpiece to
watch and study the films ideology and meanings were deep and sadly true. As
living in Sunderland, it hasnât got the best reputation with government or
money systems and this film demonstrates that perfectly through the benefit
system we explore a film with lovable but tragic characters.
3. The film is a tone down excellent look into how bad things can truly get. This
was an excellent film to research into because I wanted to represent and study
more films from Sunderland. The second film I researched into was billy Elliot a
film about a young boy struggling to find his passion in the northeast and
learning about ballet and wanting to become one of the best ballet students in
the country but its not that easy since everyone has their opinions, most
importantly his dad not wanting him to do ballet or even try. The film
represents people who do professions who is deemed wrong or ââgay. The film
taps into culture and how it affected in the northeast itâs a beautiful film that
show diversity and strength even in such a bleak area based in the northeast. I
also researched into some horror films that changed horror and was iconic this
helped my research and made my existing products post more personal to my
4. project. The three I researched into was Scream, Halloween and Chucky these
three whilst all similar all changed horror forever and solidified its space in
horror history. Scream allowed itself to poke fun and not take itself too
seriously and tried to parody some horror movies. Whilst also being its own
thing and being unique enough to call its own horror category. Halloween was
something more supernatural bases whether Michael Myers was the
ââbogeymanââ or not this was interesting to research into because of how it
could influence my film. Chucky, I researched into because of its size I thought
the practical elements I could learn from and maybe even experiment with if it
felt right. This was crucial in making my film without basing and researching
into existing products how would I know the ins and outs of horror and British
films in both types it gives me a combine detailed understanding of how to
properly plan out a film like this.
Moving on to the subject area research I researched into classic horror types
and tropes. As well as popular locations this was crucial as well because
knowing the classic horror tropes made my eventual plan much better and
looking into possible location, I can pick location that feel like horror or can be
excocted properly. With researching into the horror character types made me
want to base my characters in that category having characters like how they are
5. in the movies only strengthened my film ten times more than it normally would
have. I researched into visual characteristics for my villain. I wanted him to
stand out from the rest and not feel like a main colourful character so
researching into costumes and visual giveaways helped me form and plan more
when it came to the eventual pre-production. I Looked at technical skills as well
in horror this would help me implement them in my postproduction as well as
production and learning from all the subject matters helped me sort through
and plan the overall production better than it could have originally been.
My audience research was a massive step into getting the rationale and
eventual film demographic right I started by researching via google forms and
askes aged and gender related questions trying to home in on my audience.
The brief suggested 15 â 25 but I wanted to get a closer demographic I could
work with so when it came down to promotion and sharing, I could share in
forms that would work best for that audience type. I also asked horror related
questions seeing which classic horror is there favourite. This would help me
implement interesting and plot points from those films to keep my audience
interested. They all gave varied answered. With all that research I found out
that my audience is the mainstreamer which is an audience that likes comfort
and security nothing too crazy they like films they know and expect nothing
new. This was helpful so I donât strafe too far away from the horror category
and not implement too many crazy plot points. I Then evaluated my answered
6. and summed up how Iâm going to appeal to my audience, and this would help
me understand and implement into future posts and tasks. Knowing the
audience type and age gap helps me know what films they like, what type, why
they like them and more. All of this massively influenced my project.
After that I made a poster of sorts to sum all my research into a easy and
understandable form that also highlighted my project in a fun but creative way
In this there was my social grade describing which one it is and why and my
psychographics which was 100% the mainstreamer as well as a horror and
audience profile bar chart/pie chart each of these helped me better
understand my audience and create an overall finished poster product that
helped tie in with my rationale and future tasks.
7. After getting all that out the way I moved on to my rationale this was the most
important step in my research phase of work. I went into this planning and
wanting it to be a good rationale. So, I made up important questions that could
be asked and answered them in a very detailed manner I wanted each slide to
be filled with information so when it came time to the pitch people could
understand clearly what Iâm saying and trying to eventually make the product. I
talked about ideas, fonts and scheme, and why this film is a good idea I wanted
to discuss why itâs a good idea and whatâs its unique selling point. Doing a
horror movie might be harder than other projects so I wanted to push why I
think itâs a right decision and how I think it vastly differs from the rest. This was
a big thing to get right when it came to getting the pitch, I wanted the rationale
8. to precise and detailed with information so I could be asked in depth questions
that would help me with my pre-production elements.
After I got my pitch and wanted to get some close friends/peers to assess my
rationale and hopefully agree with the choices I made, I filmed this via phone
and uploaded to YouTube shortly after and got feedback from them, Richard
Buckley and Maddie Meehan, both very helpful with feedback and the
assessment of my rationale.
Pre â production
I started with the development of my storyboards. Which helped massively
with my script I wanted to map out shots and possible scenes when it came to
dialogue with doing around 10 or so storyboards coming up with shot ideas
this was a good decision since it helped me along my pre-production work.
After that I went to getting location/release forms, risk assessment and
resource list. All of these helped me choose and confirm key elements needed
in my film. For instance, location/release allowed me to safely work forward
without worrying about where Iâm filming and if Iâm allowed to. The resource
list clearly showed what equipment ill need and when and that was a massive
help for me because knowing what I need and when made it easier, so I wasnât
wasting time asking for equipment on days of eventual shooting. Then it was
onto my script, the script went through different stages of re writes and more.
9. It went from a 40-minute house horror movie. To an outside 10-minute horror
movie this was because of storyboarding issues I ended up not using all the
storyboards I intended mainly because they didnât end up working in the film.
The solution was to re write a new draft to fit the new version of the film which
was a more detailed and precise version. I enjoyed the script draft 2 more
because it felt easier to understand and not just boring filler scenes which was
the main issue when writing the film. After that I uploaded all my resources to
blogger and started my production.
Production
Now onto the production. Firstly, it took 3 and a half days of shooting I had
many problems with filming and people not showing. On the last day towards
get ready to shoot one of my cast mates sadly dropped out this was the 3rd
time as well he tried to post pone filming luckily on that day my brotherâs
girlfriend was visiting who also does performing arts with him and she is an
actor so I kindly asked if she would be willing to take Tylerâs space and she said
she would and that helped me massively with production it meant I didnât have
10. to stop production at all or slow it down I could pick up on the same day where
I left off. During production I managed to get photos of the set and location and
some behind the scenes of us applying makeup and blood on the props I
wanted to do this to show how things were done in the film and how we got
there. I used a Canon camera to film and operating using 3 batteries, they kept
dying, it took about 3 hours each day to film and operated quite fast after the
first day of shooting we got into the rhythm. After getting all the clips and
everything filmed, I double checked I filmed everything, and I did so it was onto
the postproduction.
11. Post â production
For the editing phase I used premier pro throughout and made sure to update
it along the way. Firstly, I started with a rough idea what I wanted and how I
wanted my film to look like using my script after forming an editing I created
draft 1 and wanted to get feedback for that draft so I could improve and
continue my progression into the film. I got tons of suggestions of what I could
add and how. I started to add each one in and create draft 2 I also created two
version of draft 2 both slightly different with each other I wanted and had an
idea of how the opening credits should look like but werenât sure which one to
choose so I did both and got a film group together to choose which one is
better and what I could add to that version. The film group was my cast mates
and actors from the filming and production I thought it was fitting if they get to
see the film and offer suggestions of how it could be better. They all agreed
draft 2 version 2 (2.5) was the better one. I ended up using that from that point
on to edit from and improve on, as well as giving key and helpful suggestions to
add. This went on to be draft 3 and I was close to the home stretch and onto
editing the final version after adding and assessing the final version and
adjustments I wanted to get one final look and feedback for the film via google
forms people offered some suggestions and opinions on the film they offered
slight but better changes that would help the film but not completely depart
from the previous 3 drafts. After adding the suggestions, I uploaded the final
draft to YouTube and was ready to start my evaluation.
12.
13. Conclusion
In conclusion, this project has been a success I have developed my skills
through camera work, editing, social and script writing. I have been able to
evaluate and clearly demonstrate my process as working and with editing. I
have also shown I can push through problems and apprehend them and fix
them sometimes. This is good because I have also stuck close to the brief, I
wanted to not break the codes and conventions for the film and stick close the
suggested areas I could bend and learn from. The film overall was a success but
could and will do better the next time another project comes around.
