Similar Text Analysis: Inception (2010)
Although the credits do not run through the opening sequence, there is an obvious climax and release and a cut to the next scene. Before the film starts we are shown the producing company logos in a rusty metallic silver with smoke or clouds with a dark background mainly, connotating maybe night time or a dream, definitely establishing a theme to the film. A strong bass filled orchestral score builds up almost overwhelming the audience. We then cut to the first scene, and we are shown waves crashing on rocks close to the shore, then out main protagonist passing out on the shore automatically putting up on his side. The makeup shows he is battered and bruised, and we can hear kids playing and the music is calmed down, were shown the protagonist firstly by a close up to reveal him but holding back the full scenery. using a shallow focus and an un-stable focusing on the lense this gives the effect off a POV from the protagonist (Leonardo DiCaprio), it shows he is trying to focus on the kids but he is about to pass out or he is dizzy, adding a dramatic effect and an emotional response from the audience. Then there is an eye-line match in a short reverse shot and you see an emotional reaction from DiCaprio and the camera is never still. The Camera stills and DiCaprio faints. An ak47 is poked into his back and a low angle shot reveals a henchman in uniform and the protagonist is shown to be armed. As more is shown, we are now inside and we are shown the back of a chair and we are slowly zoomed in to connotating a villain or an antagonist. We have a close up on a gun and a spin wheel, showing the significance of the object. DiCaprio is shown to be fed and he eats it with eager greed, who’s we was starved before maybe but now he’s being fed and cleaned up. Dialogue is exchanged and this is important to the plot but not giving anything away as just yet. While this happens, progressive incidental music played in the background. Enigma is set into the plot from early and keeps you wanting to get answers and explanations. As action kicks off you are shown that this is not the “real world” and this is a dream of some sort. The small movements in the “real world” is exaggerated and destroys the dream world, creating immense action and a race against time. An important package is included so an objective is set and the audience is always routing for the antagonist to succeed. The world collapses and we are in the next scene and and a slow motion match on action with the dropping in the bath vs. mass flooding of the building is an exhilarating shot for the audience and the big effects shows to be a USP to the film along with the big movie actors. The concept of a dream in a dream is a weird and interesting plot idea and starts up an complex theme and a mystical fantasy, with an urban/city scape, down to earth setting. This appeals to a wider range audience. The down winding of the opening stops at the real world and all the protagonists along with DiCaprio runs off leaving the antagonist on a train silent and he gives a smug smirk, this just makes him seem more sinister. The Opening in a whole is griping, action packed and question raising, this makes you want to stay and watch the rest of the film till the end. All those factors make an amazing film
OLD BOY (2003): SIMILAR TEXT ANALYSIS
The opening to old boy starts off in a non linear narrative as the director starts in the middle. He captures the audience by starting with a orchestral sound, seamlessly playing through the opening titles and a hip hop drum beat drops as a close up of a hand shaking holding an object is shown. The white on one side is contrasted with the shadow of the hand and the object; it is not clear straight away what he’s holding but the first image of the film captures the audience. The camera pans to reveal a silhouette of a man, you can see the main features but it is still not clear what the man’s identity is. This, as a thriller film creates a mystery. The Next shot cuts to an over the shoulder shot to a man leaning off a building, holding a dog, looking petrified. We now know the mysterious man is griping his tie (casually) with one hand leaning him over a building, we don’t know if he’s pulling him up or pushing him over but we are suddenly put on the man’s side. The shot is at a high angle showing he is high up off a building, showing, in the background, trees and tall tower blocks in the distance, implying they are high up. The man is holding a dog, whimpering, perpetuating a pathetic character, adding suspense to the story, the music suggests we are thrown into the action and the audience are supposed to be thrilled and engaged at this point. The next shot is a close up track of the hand griping the man’s tie and then ends at a big close up of the whimpering man’s face, emphasising the bizarre situation. The man asks who he is and an enigma is formed. Then a medium shot of the man, still in silhouette, and it zooms to an extreme close up of the man, he then starts a sentence, “my name is...” This shot is drawn out to add tension, and as the music and the shot reaches its peak in climax the shot cuts to a graphic match, also an elliptical edit to the same person, and he reveals his name. This shot shows a dopey, chubby and pathetic man. We are shown juxtaposition from the last shot of him. From a dangerous, anti-hero type character, to a pathetic, dopey, “nobody” that we find out is him 15 years ago. Then the film begins “officially”.We are engaged and pleased as an audience and we now want to watch more of the film. The thriller genre has proved itself in this opening and has thrilled us and given us a taste of the film, then calmed down to leave us wanting more.
