This is their Reformation Portfolio
which contains original signed
homilies from Martin Luther,
Melanchthon,Bugenhagen, Creuziger,
Jonas and Major. This portfolio owned
by their church is believed to be the
finest collection in existence of such
documents. Saint Luke’s is probably
the only Church in America to have in
its possession original manuscripts
from the leaders of the Reformation.
This gift was presented to them by
then Council President Bernard K.
Schaefer at the 1000th Anniversary
Celebration of our congregation.

This item is a biblical quote from the
Gospel of John. It is central to their
practice of Christian Science and their
understanding of God. They are a
Christian Science Church. Their
building was built as a Christian
Science Church, opened 1901
Architect: Frederick R. Comstock
Style: French Renaissance/Beaux Arts
The teachings of Christian Science
are universal and practical and can be
studied and applied by anyone seeking
spiritual truth.
Mary Baker Eddy, who discovered
and founded Christian Science,
defined it as “the law of God, the law
of good” (Rudimental Divine Science).
This deeper understanding of God as
infinite Love and unchanging goodness
leads to prayer that can heal, redeem,
and restore anyone.

Christ & Saint Stephen’s Church is
comprised of two of the oldest parishes in
the City of New York. Christ & Saint
Stephen's Episcopal Church is the oldest
church on Manhattan's Upper West Side.
The first service of Saint Stephen’s Church
was held at what is now our present site
on October 3, 1897. Christ & Saint
Stephen’s Church is a parish in the Diocese
of New York of The Episcopal Church and a
member of the worldwide Anglican
Communion.
The picture is of the dalmatic worn by
Christ & Saint Stephen’s patron saint, Saint
Stephen.

Built in 1917 by Gustav Steinbach in the
French Gothic style, Blessed Sacrament
Church embodies the Medieval Catholic
spirit, a great part of which concerned
itself with the nature of Eucharistic
theology. The church’s brick facade, now
under construction, is covered in cast
stone, with reliefs and statues that depict
priest-saints and devotion to the Blessed
Sacrament. Upon entering the church,
one’s eyes are lifted to the large cross
which hangs above the sanctuary and the
beautifully vaulted ceiling. Most of the
stained glass (various saints and symbols
of the Eucharist) are by Clement Heaton.
This little lamb, suspended high in our
church, was slain but now victorious! He
carries his banner wherever he goes,
leading his followers on!

Rutgers Presbyterian Church is a welcoming,
progressive, spiritual community with a unique
architectural history. The first Rutgers Street
Church opened for worship on May 13, 1798 at
the corner of Rutgers and Henry Streets.
Following several moves, our current church
and church house were created by Architect
Henry Otis Chapman in the English Gothic style
and completed in 1925.
G. Own Bonawit(1891-1971) designed RPC’s
Sacred Treasure- a colorful stained glass Angel
with Cymbals! Bonawit is best known as the
artist whose studio created thousands of pieces
of stained glass for Yale University.

Detail of an angel from the stained glass
window “The Faithful Centurion” (Gospel of
Matthew – Verse 8:5-13). In this New
Testament passage, a Roman centurion
(professional officer of the Roman army)
visits Jesus at Capernaum (a fishing village
on the Sea of Galilee where the Apostle
Matthew lived), and asks Jesus to heal the
centurion’s paralyzed servant. Jesus praises
the centurion’s great faith and heals the
servant. This window was probably made in
England, and was installed in the 1920’s,
about 20 years after the church was built, as
a memorial to a church member named
Robert Albert McKim, who died in 1920.
English made windows like this one, in a late
Victorian style influenced by the Pre-
Raphaelites (the Pre-Raphaelites painted
saints and heroes with perfect faces, bodies,
and hair, using very sharp, clear images and
bright colors), were popular, especially for
Episcopal churches, from the 1860’s
through the early 1900’s.

The church building of St. Paul and St.
Andrew was designed by architect
Robert Henderson Robertson,
completed in 1897, and designated a
city landmark in 1981. Our mission is
to build a community of radical
welcome that follows Jesus into the
streets of the city to increase the
amount of love and justice in the
world. SPSA is the home of West Side
Campaign Against Hunger and
Riverside Goddard's Home Delivered
Meals program.
This angel was originally in the
sanctuary, but found a new home
when the space was remodeled in
1938 after St. Andrew merged with St.
Paul.

The blacklist Tiffany window in the
sanctuary was installed in 1929.
It was the first window to include human
representation at West Park.
In 1988 the window was restored by a
congregant in memory of his partner,
Steven J. Festa, who passed away from
aids. Steven always viewed himself as
the child being held by Jesus in the
window.

The Orthodox icon of the Annunciation is
one that presents the joy of the
announcement of the coming of Christ. It is
an icon of bright colors, depicting the
Archangel Gabriel, who has descended
from heaven, and the Virgin Mary, who has
been chosen to be the Mother of God. The
card is a photo of the icon within our
church sanctuary that is venerated each
March 25th on the Feastday of the
Annunciation.
Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church is on
the list of Sacred Sites due to the historical
significance of the building architects Heinz
and LaFarge. The church edifice is the last
remaining religious building entirely
designed and executed by the firm.

Our featured item is a plaque dedicated to the
memory of our second pastor, the John
Mitchell Mason. Rev. Mason was called back
to New York from his studies in Edinburgh,
Scotland, to succeed his father, our church's
first pastor who died in 1792. Both Rev.
Masons were connected to many of the
founding fathers: the father as a chaplain in
George Washington's Continental Army, and
the son as a friend of Alexander Hamilton. In
fact he was summoned to Hamilton's
deathbed, following the duel with Aaron Burr
in 1804, and delivered Hamilton's
eulogy. John M. Mason went on to become
the first Provost of his alma mater, Columbia
College, and a founder of a seminary that
became the forerunner of Union Theological
Seminary. He was a celebrated orator, prolific
author, educator, and publisher.

This Tiffany work of art represents
the dove of the Holy Spirit and was
given by the children of the parish
in 1907 to celebrate St. Michael's
Centenary.

Parapet which features a key person
from each century in the common era.
Find the piece from the 20th century,
which has more than one person in each
niche. The people are: Dr. Martin King,
Jr., Albert Einstein, Susan B. Anthony
and Ghandi.
Saint John the Divine is the Episcopal
Cathedral of New York and is one of the
largest churches in the world. The main
hall, or nave, is two football fields long!
Our mission is to be a place of prayer for
all people, and maintain the
architectural legacy of our 125 year old
building.
