SUBJECT-VERB
AGREEMENT
Hasnor & Jimmi
Learning Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, students should be
able to:
• Be familiar with the rules governing the
subject – verb agreement,
• Apply the rules in written exercise.
Subject-Verb Agreement
Do I need an
s at the end
of the verb?
Or should I
leave the s
off?
This presentation
covers maintaining
agreement
between subjects
and verbs.
A subject-verb agreement
item on an objective test
might look like this ...
Sample Item
The foods that provide good nutrition is
often the least tasty; a hamburger and fries,
on the other hand, satisfy the tongue but
clog the arteries.
A. provides
B. are
C. satisfies
D. No change is necessary.

Does
disagreement
happen at
provide, is, or
satisfy?
Is needs to be
the plural are,
which option B
fixes.
Agreement in a Nutshell
The elephant
trumpets for a peanut.
The elephants
trumpet for peanuts.
elephant = singular subject
trumpets = singular verb
elephants = plural subject
trumpet = plural verb
In the present
tense, singular
verbs end in the suffix
s; plural verbs do
not.
Subjects and verbs must
agree in number.
 Singular subject = singular verb
 Plural subject = plural verb
 Cow= singular, eats= singular
 Ducks= plural, quack= plural
 *Hint*= SVS- singular verbs have an S
 Singular yes?- the verb has an “S”!
 Singular no? The “S” has to go!
Prepositional phrases
between the subject and
verb usually do not affect
the agreement.
The biker in this race is very competitive.
The bikers in this race are very
competitive.
Units of measurement
usually use a singular
verb.
 Six gallons of paint was used on the house.
 Five dollars is too much for a cup of coffee.
Collective nouns usually
take a singular verb.
 The herd is stampeding.
The class was ready for the test.
Titles of books, movies,
novels, etc. are treated as
singular.
 Holes was one of my favorite books.I
want to see the movie.
Two infinitives separated
by and take a plural verb.
 To run and to read are my two favorite
“Free-time” activities.
Gerunds alone take a
singular verb. Gerunds
linked by and take a plural
verb.
 Dancing is not something everyone can
do as well as I can!
Two [or more] singular
nouns joined by and make a
plural subject.
The chicken wing and pork rib sit
untouched on Ruth’s plate.
Because there’s no s at
the end of sit, you
know it’s a plural verb.
Every chicken wing and pork rib sits
untouched on Ruth’s plate.
When each or every precedes
two [or more] singular nouns
joined by and, you have a
singular subject.
Because there is an
s at the end of sit,
you know it’s a
singular verb.
In this situation, no matter
how many singular nouns you
join with and, the subject is
still singular.
Every chicken wing, pork rib, slice of pepperoni pizza,
hotdog, hamburger, steak, and fried shrimp sits
untouched on Ruth’s plate.

I’m a
vegetarian!
Use caution with these three
conjunctions: either … or,
neither … nor, and not only …
but also.
Not only the employees but also their
boss wish the shift would end.
Not only the employees but also their
boss wishes the shift would end.
Not only the boss but also her
employees wish the shift would end.
You’ll have two subjects, but
only the closer one—in this
case boss—counts!
If you flip the two subjects,
so that employees is next to
the verb, then wish will work!
These indefinite pronouns
are always singular [even
when they seem plural].
 Each, either, neither
 Anyone, anybody, anything
 Everyone, everybody, everything
 No one, nobody, nothing
 Someone, somebody, something
Everyone on Earth =
more than one
person—billions of
people, in fact.
The word everyone,
however, is still
singular.
Both, few, many, others, and
several take a plural verb
 Several runners need to finish the race.
 A few students have the right answer.
When the subject is all, any,
more, most, none, or some, this is
the ONLY time you must look at
the object of the prepositional
phrase to determine whether it is
singular or plural
 All of the chickens have laid eggs.
 Some of the milk has spilled.
The squirrel as well as the pigeons keep an
eye on Sammy, the sneaky cat.
Beware interrupting phrases.
 As well as
 Along with
 Together with
 Including
 In addition to
 Especially
Bad
kitty!
The squirrel as well as the pigeons keep an
eye on Sammy, the sneaky cat.
The squirrel as well as the pigeons keeps
an eye on Sammy, the sneaky cat.
This sentence might
sound right, but it is
completely wrong!
Don’t get confused by the
words that come between
the subject and verb.
The detective who was called to the
case is usually very good.
Beware inverted word order.
Here is the onions you need for the chili. In the
refrigerator is the jalapeño peppers you might
want to add.
Cross through
prepositional
phrases to find
the real subject!
Here and
there are
never the
subjects.
Here are the onions you need for the chili. In
the refrigerator is the jalapeño peppers you
might want to add.
Here are the onions you need for the chili. In
the refrigerator are the jalapeño peppers you
might want to add.
