Here is one way to think about what an expanded toolkit of HIV prevention and treatment options would look like. A comprehensive approach to HIV prevention should have many elements.Having a complete HIV prevention toolkit would mean we would have access to all these different strategies – both tools we have currently and new ones that are still being developed. No single tool or strategy will be the silver bullet. Ideally we will use these different tools and strategies in various combinations with one another. We can think about prevention in a similar way we do with HIV/AIDS treatment. People who have HIV/AIDS take a number of different medications – Combination Therapy. In the same way, we should think of prevention as Combination Prevention. Right now, we have many tools that people can use before exposure, right at the point of HIV transmission, and after being infected. We already agree that we need to improve people’s access to the existing tools, shown here in black.Advocates and researchers around the world are also working to see what new options could be added to this toolkit in the near future. These are shown here in red.As we will see, antiretroviral (ARV)-based prevention options could exist at all of these points.
Now we’re going to talk more specifically about rectal microbicides. First, we need to acknowledge that anal intercourse is a common, human behavior, practiced by gay men, men who have sex with men, and between men and women. Following are some statistics.
