The Exchange 14 Week Business Model Innovation Bootcamp

  1. 14-WEEK BUSINESS INNOVATION PROGRAM INNOVATING AROUND THE BOX Dates: 29th April to 29th July 2020 Contact: Start@YourExchange.Co
  2. OUR CORE VALUES
  3. Don’t tell me how to do it… SHOW ME! EVERY BUSINESS OWNER.
  4. YOUR INNOVATION PROGRAM As the Coronavirus epidemic continues to cause widespread disruption to small and medium businesses, it is crucial to take measures and formulate action plans to mitigate risks on impacts to business operations. For most businesses, this involves renewing business models, customer acquisition, finding new revenue streams and always, always be innovating. This Innovation Program, designed by The Scale Institute at Charles Sturt University, is tailored to ensure your business not only can survive, but continues to thrive! This Innovation Program is designed to help your business: ✔ TAKE ACTION ✔ RENEW YOUR BUSINESS MODEL ✔ INNOVATE IN THE CURRENT COVID-19 ENVIRONMENT Take action during the COVID-19 outbreak.
  5. YOUR INNOVATION PROGRAM Accelerators typically guide teams through the whole spectrum of innovation best practices. The result? Multidisciplinary teams that think and act like early stage companies, ready to bring new solutions to market. Accelerate or kill key strategic projects Build the capabilities to run innovation projects Entrepreneurial talent is a key driver to success In startup terms, this is a Business Accelerator.
  6. WHAT TO EXPECT? Here are a few questions to help you assess key elements when scoping out the Innovation Program at The Exchange, before joining our accelerator: • What kinds of projects you would like to accelerate? Are they focused on existing or new product/offerings? • How will decisions get made? Consider which of four operating models is most suitable, based on the desired level of independence and autonomy. • Who is your ideal customer? Do you know your market segment, or is there a white space or unmet need to explore? • What resources are available, both people and budget? How much capacity is available to dedicate to this innovation project? • Do you have a set team in place? Will the team have prior knowledge about the project, or be multidisciplinary?
  7. OUR AIM IS TO CREATE LIVING BUSINESSES Target New Opportunities, Locally and Globally Scale in an Ecosystem, Work in a Cohort Design for Your Unique Customers Rewire your Culture Build Engagement Internally, and Externally HOW?
  8. ‘INNOVATING AROUND THE BOX’ Learning and insights are the focus to discover if employees, customers and users really want your innovation. The program helps to develop the mindset and skills to survive innovating within an existing organisation. Strap yourself in, your ideas will change, embrace uncertainty and thrive outside your comfort zone. Success of the program will be the huge learning curves. That is the nature of innovation. Welcome aboard! Practical, experiential, entrepreneurial! There is no shortage of challenges that need to be solved in existing organisations. Successful innovation and entrepreneurship are all about the messy stuff in the middle, between the ideas and the execution. In the last decade, several key innovation approaches have gained traction amongst entrepreneurs seeking to get new business ideas off the ground. Increasingly, these approaches are cohering into a standard innovation process for companies seeking out a new business model. The reality is that a new business model needs to ensure a market fit and the ability to mobilise financial and human resources to sustain their competitive advantage. This challenge-led Innovation Program develops participants’ capacity to “think differently” and “act entrepreneurially”, whilst they practice, renewing a business model. The program combines both theory and (more importantly) practice. You will make “guesses” about your business model and “get out of the building” to test them in your community; current and future customers, partners and competitors. You will then share those insights in the Innovating around the Box sessions. We guide you one-on-one with experienced individuals who have either built successful companies or run them. This is not an accelerator where you get investment to innovate your business model, although we will encourage you to further the innovation pathway and join more advanced innovation programs if you wish.

  11. SESSION 1: What do you really want? Developing Leadership, Business Models & Ambition Innovation doesn’t have to be radical and disruptive – leaders can innovate from their current position, and quite successfully. This is not new thinking; participants will have access to an experienced facilitator to focus developing you as a leader in an ambidextrous organisation. We will explore the drivers for business model innovation and what characteristics you could look at in renewing your business model. Lastly, accelerating your business opportunities needs to align with your purpose. We will clarify your ambition for the business, and over the 14-week program ensure we always are aligning to your purpose.
  12. SESSION 3: What is your potential? Industry, Growth Opportunities and Problem Solving There is no shortage of challenges that need to be solved in existing organisations. Successful innovation targets the messy stuff in the middle, between ideas and execution. This session focuses on the user, as the catalyst to renew your business model. Using a design thinking approach, participants will be able to identify opportunities for their business to grow by solving their ‘users’ most challenging problems. At the end of the session, they will have formulated questions to undertake empathy interviews. You will make “guesses” about your business model and “get out of the building” to test them with your community; current and future customers, partners and competitors. We will provide you a lean approach to ensure there is a fit for the innovation, to the needs of their customer and align to their business strategy.
  13. SESSION 5: What does success look like? Examining Value & Maximising Growth This session will focus on examining value from the perspective of the customer (or other stakeholders), not you or your business. It is the heart of the Business Model Canvas. Now that you are renewing your business model to solve unmet needs of your user, how can you now maximise the growth opportunities identified in Module 2. Participants will get their hands dirty and go through a cadenced value proposition canvas workshop. By the end of the session, your value proposition will describe the way that your product or service provides value to the customer.
  14. SESSION 7: Where is your growth? Product Feasibility, Collaboration & Product Viability This is where the program accelerates your thinking off the page into a tangible product to test with your market. Future focused businesses don’t waste time working up a business case for every new idea. Working in small teams, they complete a business model canvas in order to begins to explore the desirability, feasibility, and viability of their idea. In this session, your experienced “sprint” coach will show you how to test your assumptions and build a minimum viable product. As daunting as it might seem, you do not need to do it alone. We will introduce you to open innovation, a concept that allows your business to maximise the company value with collaborative partnerships; employees, customers, partners, technology and competitors. As you now are expected to run experiments on the renewal of your business model every two weeks each question needs to be answered if it has: • been invalidated • more learning required • been validated
  15. SESSION 9: How to sustain? Examining Operations, Competitive Advantage & Distribution Business Model Innovation doesn't have to just be about maximising revenue. Another massive opportunity that businesses can look at are operational efficiencies. You don’t need to be the expert at everything. In Session 4, we encouraged you to look at open innovation, and a network of collaborative partners. This might mean you don’t usually need full time functions in a SME. Our experts will challenge you to look at every aspect of your business and ask you to make decisions based on time, cost and quality. Whilst leveraging existing resources and activities of the business, our guide will unlock your competitive advantage and what channels should be used to reach your market. We’ll provide practical steps to ‘make more with less’.
  16. SESSION 11: How to fund innovation? Operational Excellence & Financing Innovation A winning formula will be a new business model to combine the pace of a startup COMBINED with the scale of your long-standing company. By this stage of a company the accelerator, the supply and demand sides of the business model will have been completed. You should also have articulated a go-to-market strategy for the new product. The current operating environment encompasses end-to-end optimisation of the supply chain that generates new value (innovation). Our facilitator, a serial entrepreneur and small business owner will take you through how operational innovation can transform your company. You will understand how operational excellence includes processes and structures for: • Reallocation of resources • Introduction of new technologies and processes • Addition of new employees • Retraining of existing employees • Integration of organizations through consolidation of common functions • Selective use of key suppliers, alliance partners and outsourcing specialists
  17. SESSION 13: How do you communicate with impact? Active Communication and Presentations Your business model has been renewed. You have tested it with 5-10 stakeholders each session for the past 2 months, and you are ready to implement the new innovation. You know how much it costs, though you still need to sell it. Stories sell. Customers buy ‘relations, relations & magic’, rather than stuff. To do this, you need active communication skills and to present with impact. Presentations convey new understandings, paint a picture of the future & how to get there, but most importantly empower others to take next steps and help you to operationalize this model. Our experienced communications expert will provide you the tools and techniques. This helps you to build your story, with storyboarding techniques that translate and realise your ambition for the business
