2. Definition
Pronouns are
substitutes for
nouns. The word
pronoun simply
means “for a
noun” or “in place
of a noun”.

3. Common uses of pronouns
• To avoid repetition of nouns.
• To replace the words for people, places, or
things. (Claudia – She, Tomas – He)
• To introduce a question. (what, who)

4. Pronouns avoid repetition
Nouns Susan goes to the pool.
Susan works at Lakewood Pool.
Ben asks Susan if Susan wants a party.
Nouns Susan goes to the pool.
Pronoun She works at Lakewood Pool.
Ben asks her if she wants a party.

7. Personal or Subject pronoun
• Definition:
A subject pronoun performs the action of the verb
or is used in a prepositional phrase.
e.g.
He loves hamburgers.

8. Personal/Subject pronouns examples
She swims well.
• They visit the beach.
• It is big.

10. Object pronoun
• Definition:
An object pronoun receives the action of the verb.
e.g.
Sentence Subject pronoun Verb or action Object pronoun
I love you. I love you
She knows me. She knows me.
We don’t like it. We don’t like it.

11. • Definition:
A possessive pronoun stands alone and shows
relationship or ownership. It has no apostrophe.
• Uses:
– To avoid repeating information that is already
clear.
• E.g.
This book is my book, not your book. (Sounds repetitive)
This book is mine, not yours. (Mine and yours
are possessive pronouns)
