Goal 6: Combat HIV/Aids, Malaria and
Other Diseases
 Why does this goal resonate for you?
- HIV/AIDS affects many people globally including those in our own community.
- Our community is at an increased risk for HIV/AIDS infections and other blood
borne infections with the increase in IV drug use.
- Malaria and Tuberculosis are treatable and preventable with access to screening
and treatment and measures to prevent/decrease transmissions such as mosquito
nets and medications.
- Many diseases are preventable with access to vaccines.

Other Diseases
 How can your interest be applied locally?
- Volunteering with organizations that work with the community including those
who are homeless.
- Our local health department can use additional individuals to help provide
services and advertise access to supplies, testing and care.

 Where Can I Make the Biggest Contribution?
- Volunteering my skills as a nurse to organizations who assess and assist individuals
in the community.
- Participate in vaccination drills that provide access to the community.
- Volunteer in mobile health vehicles.
- Get involved in organizations such as the Pierce County Medical Reserve Corps,
Washington State Health Department and other local public health organizations.
On a Global Scale:
- Donate/volunteer to organizations that provide vaccinations and medical treatment
abroad.

Goal 6: Combat HIV/Aids, Malaria and
Other Diseases
 Is there a feature of social media that can be uniquely applied to this goal?
- The use of the “Hashtag” (#) can be used to help spread information of this
goal and get people more interested.
- The hashtag is found throughout many social media platforms and can be
followed by people with similar interests.
