2. 16C Bettes
This is the oldest painting in
the collection, dated back to
1545 in the 16C.
John Bettes may have worked
with the German painter Han
Holbein. Due to long exposure
to light the hue of the painting
has changed from blue to
brown.
3. 16C Hilliard
He was an apprentice at the
Queen’s goldsmith. In 1572 he
made his first known miniature of
the Queen, gaining her favour.
This painting was painted just a
few years after his miniature.
Nicholas Hilliard was a miniaturist
and this one of the two normal size
he painted.
In style, it is artificial, flat, linear
and shadowless, as the Queen
liked. This gave the Queen the
same visual character as religious
icons. He face is white and almost
inhuman dressed in incredibly and
richly encrusted with gold
embroidery, covered in pearls and
jewels.
17. 18C Blake
William Blake (1757-1827) was a
poet, painter, engraver and
printmaker. He earned a meagre a
living by working for a publisher.
In his spare time he produced his own
poems in books, which he made and
published himself engraving the text
and surrounding it with illustrations,
coloured by hand.
In this way he published his works the
‘Song of Innocent’ (1789) and the
‘Songs of Experience’ (1794). These
are his most important works.
This frontispiece also known as ‘The
Ancient of Days’ was published on his
work ‘Europe a Prophecy’ (1794).

portraitist, who painted the rich and famous of his time.

One of his well known painting - Pinkie.

actor Ira Frederick Aldridge. John
Simpson also painted Aldridge again
in another painting.
The Slave trade was made illegal in
1807 in Britain but continued in British
colonies in the 1830s.
30. 19C Hunt
“This picture depicted a wealth man
visiting his mistress in an
apartment for her. The tune he idly
plays on the piano reminded her of
her past and she rises from his lap
toward the bright outside world,
(made visible to the viewers in the
mirror). The claustrophobic space
is filled with intricate clues, such as
the bird trying to escape from the
cat and the female figure enclosed
in a glass dome, which echoes the
shape of the painting.” NB Tate Gallery
Highlights guide.
William Holman Hunt was one of
the pre-Raphaelites.
35. 19C Rosseti
Dante Gabriel Rosseti was
also a pre-Raphaelites.

London. He studied under
Holman Hunt

passages in the Bible Song of
Songs and Psalm 45.
“My beloved is mine and I am
his. Let him kiss me with
kisses of his mouth: for thy
love is better than wine”.
44. 20C G John
