- So upon starting this project, I knew that I wanted to focus on something related to mental health or to drug addiction, and after searching through social media I found this post linking to an article on the Huffington Post. The article is titled โ โHeroin is The Worst Thing To Ever Happen To Me, And Iโve Never Touched It.โ In this article, the author takes the point of a view of how it may feel to be an addict struggling with their heroin addiction, but flips the arguement to show Summary of article โ
- Using that post and article as a jumping off point, I decided to create my theme, which is Addiction: its stigma and its ripple effect.
- Sometimes people do not take drug addiction seriously because they do not truly believe that it can affect them or their families. But unfortunately, the reality is that drug addiction has the ability to affect everyone regardless of their race, gender, ethnicity, hometown, social class. Addiction does not discriminate. A great examples of a former celebrity who has spoke a lot about her struggle with addiction is Jodie Sweetin who played Stephanie Tanner in Full House and I will be using her an example to thread my three main points. However, she is just one among many stars who have struggled with addiction. In 2013, CNN actually made a list that they called โZac Efron and other celebs we didnโt know battled addictionโ which included stars from Zac Efron to Cory Monteith to Fergie. However, this is just a few well-known people who have struggled with addiction, among many others who we will never know about.
- To link back to Jodie Sweetin, in many of her interviews, she admits that she was in essence living a double life, her family really did not know about the addiction she was facing, but for many Addiction is really a family disease and when it spirals out of control it really does affect an addictโs loved ones. When I was further researching about how addiction really is family issue and actually searching for a picture for this slide, I saw a meme that was made of Carly Fiorina that said she โturned her step-daughter to drugs and suicideโ and I found that to be incredibly disgusting and disturbing, because it was someone making fun of a real difficult situation that can happen to any of us. Carly Fiorina often speaks about her step-daughter battle with addiction:
